Re: Iranian navy rescuse US ship
What the fuck are we supposed to do if a tinpot dictator or leader of a rebel army in some god-forsaken African or Balkan shit-hole decides he wants to genocide an ethnic group? "You can't kill your people! I ALREADY DID!!!!!!!!!" You miserable fantasy-enraptured wretch of a human being. During the...

Re: Iranian navy rescuse US ship
I haven't heard about Chinese or Japanese anti-piracy efforts for a while. I did hear Japan is considering changing their constitution to take part in more international military adventures though. (Iran has been offering forces for UN peacekeeping missions too lately.) I don't really like the idea;...

Re: Iran fails at photoshop
Did any of you morons read the actual article? The author was mocking the paranoid idiocy of Americans and Europeans. Arrogant empires claim they need to put ballistic missile shields up to protect people from the craaaaaazy Iranian threat. This isn't true. The picture symbolizes how absurd the whol...

Re: U.S. Navy rescues Iranian sailors
Yeah, but if we weren't there, someone else might have been.
It's right place, right time, and they did the right thing, but, that's all it is. It doesn't really say anything about the bigger picture. Any other ship being there would have probably done the same thing.

Re: my worldbuilding randomness
I have my shields! Rotating armor might help spread laser fire around, prolonging it's lifespan. A steady shot, instead of drilling a hole, now carves a little groove. If there's multiple layers of rotating, it makes even following the rotation hard to penetrate. This will be fairly new technology, ...

Re: FB Tracks You Even if You're Just a Visitor
What's really insidious here is they managed to rope a lot of people in on their one sided widgets and data collection.... without doing much of anything. Facebook login, like, comments, a whole pile of shit that individuals provide to them and that webmasters provide to them. What do the individual...

Re: Bachmann: American Should be less socialist...like China
Michele Bachmann is an idiot. Does anybody actually take her seriously?
I know a lot of Republicans, but I don't know anybody who thinks Congresswoman Bachmann is a good candidate.
The smart money is probably on Mitt Romney.

Re: my worldbuilding randomness
No cloaking device. I'm probably so conservative on the tech to be unrealistically stagnant - if it hasn't been test fired today, I'm hesitant to run with it. ECM is a possibility. One simple kind may be blinding light - shine your laser at their telescopes. Even if it doesn't hurt it, I betcha pick...

Re: my worldbuilding randomness
I don't believe in the stealth-free setting :P If you're running with your reactor hot in the middle of nowhere, and the other guy has some telescopes pointed at you, you'll probably be seen. But, that's already some variables, and we haven't gotten into identification or precision targetting yet. S...

Re: my worldbuilding randomness
Another thing just come to mind about laser ships. You don't so much "fire" a laser as you "shine" one. You can have one that charges and fires, but my preference is one that is steady state - it's like a light bulb. Can run it for as long as you want. No need to charge, no need to cool down. (well,...

Re: US wealth gap between young and old is widest ever
Something else just came to mind, on income and skewing averages. We can get an idea of the inequality by comparing the median income - what 50% of people get or more - with the average income - the sum of all incomes, divided by the population. The median for a US household is about $45k. The avera...
