I believe the encounter rates are set to 20 steps, which means that every step you take raises the chance of an encounter from like 2.5% to 100% on the 20th step. I'll try to set it to 25 steps next game.

25-30, please. The random monsters are just annoying, especially if that x% chance is hit every second step

20 is the "normal" number that the program defaults to, and I had absolutely no idea what it meant back then. The RPGmaker 2003 help file is, honestly, quite a bit easier to go through than the RPGmaker 2000 one was.

If you want I can take the wimp version and alter it to bring the encounter rate to 25-30. Shouldn't take more than five minutes, just have to go through every single map where random encounters happen.

We don't have spoiler tags, do we? Minimizing size for spoilers on that damn battle:

Adam coded them a month or two back.

Is the flickering black band an inevitable side effect or does it have something to do with my video setup? Also, the text in the intro could do with some slowing down, but otherwise I find this game surprisingly entertaining so far (I just picked up Misty and am farming for XP).
'I wonder how far the barometer sunk.'-'All der way. Trust me on dis.'

'Undead or alive, you're coming with me.'

because I screwed it up

We have two different types of spoiler tags

[h=In Line] Like this that uses [h ] to hide things[/h]

and we also have [spoilers ]
[spoilers]This, which has to make you highlight[/spoilers]

Don't forget the World Map. Minerva Temple is to the north, a cross of trees by the river.

If you don't get it before completing the Forbidden Mountains area you can't get it at all until the very end of the game.

Edit: I've never been satisfied with FFTFM's intro anyway. Too wordy, and I was trying to make it fit the music track.

Not to worry, Steve, I DID remember about the map.
I AM still wondering about that black flickering bar.

This looks a bit more advanced than the old one, I guess that's the power of RPGMaker 2003?

Wasn't there a more recent one? I remember something about that a while back.

RPG Maker XP and RPGMaker VX, yes. But they are blasphemy, for they returned to the "straight ahead, no characters on screen" combat interface!

Actually, I think VX went further; no battle backgrounds either; the enemy just pops up on your screen and you start fighting.

Ah yeah, now I remember. Those were terrible ideas.

I considered briefly trying to make a game with the RPGMaker series, but then I was tempted by the promised glory of Neverwinter Nights.

Now THAT was a letdown. Ugh.

Not exactly a step AHEAD then in the terms of combat interface, now is it?

Stick with 2003. I like this animated battle, reminds me less of old school Dragon Warrior on the NES and more of FF6
