So after a long long LONG (since the end of Urza's Trilogy), I have been away from Magic the Gathering, and now I desire a comeback.

So, help me out. What are the good sets to get for a newb? What cards should I look for? Wha's up with Type I and Type II?

Welcome back to the fold of Magic gamers! N00bs should look into ravnica, guildpact and dissension, and the newest tourney (Type 2) set comes out on Friday (Coldsnap(the third set in the ice age block, and better late than never)). I wouldn't bother too much with core set for now (9th edition) as the cards are currently being decided for the upcoming 10th edition.

The next sets to come out will be Time Spiral block, but I don't recall when those are due out. More info and current rules and updates can be found here. Be on the lookout for the new Ravnica dual lands (called shock lands) and some other powerful cards.

Type 1 is now called Legacy, and just like always without the P9 it's tough to win. My personal fave though, as I am a collector of 3rd edition.

I hope I answered all your questions adequately, and Good Luck.

WTF?! There was a 3rd 'chapter' to IceAge?

or is this something that WoTC has decided 'should be' and just made becuase they had a lot of leftover card ideas and no where to use them...

However .. it would be nice to use my SnowCovered Lands again...

you bet! coldsnap is the 3rd piece that was never completed, but it came out yesterday, and my wife won't let me buy any! oh well, I'll just have to get sneaky I guess, or make some money. At any rate, snow covered lands are actually useful in coldsnap, so check it out when you get the chance.
