Well, this is an idea I've had kicking around in my head for a while, and finally I've decided to share it and see what you all think.
This is my dream computer setup, and hopefully something I might be able to do eventually.
The basic computer doesn't matter. All it needs are the right parts to make it work and maybe a 100GB hard drive (60 should suffice) for the OS/OSes to reside. Again, the computer itself doesn't matter, because like most computer systems, it would be replaced every 3-6 years.
What's more important is the data. I would create a RAID array of 6-8 drives, starting with a goal of 1-2 Terabytes of data, and increasing as data needs increased. These drives would be seperate from the computer itself, and there would be a second array of such drives to operate as a backup system in the event of catastrophic data failure from software corruption. The drives would be able to be disconnected from the computer and hooked in to any new system I buy. In a way, it would be a local "thin client" setup. It would be virtually impervious to hardware failure and highly resistant to software failure, and it would forever remove the dangers of losing your data as you move from one computer to the other.
And yes, I would be doing this for several reasons. I hate to lose my data, I hate to reinstall shit, I hate to UNinstall shit to make room for new shit, and I like being able to load up any game, movie, or music I want to with near lighting speed.

mmmm.....320GB Seagate SATA Drives at $79 USD apeice...or the Western Digital 500gb SATA Drives at $160 a peice....easy enough to get 1-2 TB of storage.....and the backups for less than 700 USD.
setting them up in a RAID config...be easy in a seperate rack....
then the computer....you can build a decent tower for about 500 now adays...depending on the parts you get and if you shop for it.
mmm...you could build you system for about $1300-$1500...I'd imagine...depending if you could find the setup for the external RAID configs that'll let you hotswap everything, or even swap them between computers.....

Um, if that's the case, then why don't you just use a file server instead? Just save all your data on the file server, and it won't really matter how often you replace your PC.Hotfoot wrote:Again, the computer itself doesn't matter, because like most computer systems, it would be replaced every 3-6 years.

That, or probably a Storage Area Network if you want to be overboard

So be it. If saying "NO" means being alone, then to hell with love, with romance, with marriage, and all the shit life keeps pumping at me. I'll walk alone, but with freedom and a healed pride.

I don't see how this is anything special. You're talking about a reletively cheap file server + thin clients.
