#1 Apple's Brewing Sh*tstorm

gizmodo.com wrote:I've been lucky to be in the middle of a number of Internet shitstorms in my life. They've been absolutely surreal, unfair, cruel. No one will listen to your side of the story. People you thought were friends join the pile-on. Etc etc. And then it passes, and eventually you go back to life as it was. I don't want to re-litigate any of them, please — but I just want to say I know what it's like.

Now Rex Hammock, who I admire as a friend and as a pundit, wrote a piece about Apple and the crazy situation with the iPhone 4. He's right, but he doesn't quite go far enough in his analysis.

I don't think the problem is with the iPhone 4. I think what we're seeing is Apple's charm wearing off. The Reality Distortion Field bubble is about to burst. Their run as the Exceptional Company is about to end. And they're going to be the last ones to figure it out. And it's going to be the ugliest shitstorm you've ever seen.

Why will it be so ugly? Because Apple's hype has been steadily inflating since 1997 when Steve Jobs returned, and it's never taken a dip. They've risen from being written off to being worth more than Microsoft.

It's also going to get ugly because we're fed up with corporations. It was remarkable that there were no ads for oil companies on the World Cup broadcasts (at least the ones I watched). Can you imagine listening to a pitch from Exxon or BP saying they are working for our energy independence, or to clean up the planet or all the other lies they were telling us while they were taking huge unnecessary risks with the ecology of the oceans? They're smart enough to know now is not the time to be spouting bullshit at us.

It will be ugly because Apple is going to let it get ugly. Because unlike the oil companies they have no experience with PR disasters. When I read their first public response on July 2, the one that said the problem was the meter measuring the strength of AT&T's signal, I couldn't believe this was meant to be taken seriously. It's the kind of story The Onion might have written on a bad day. Or Jon Stewart. That a corporate PR team wrote this says how unseasoned their people are. That they thought this answer was going to satisfy anyone says how out of touch they are with the world they are in.
"We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

"Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."
Apple has no concept of what's it like to be disbelieved, untrusted, seen as an American corporation and nothing more.

I wonder how Apple is going to deal with their first serious virus. Microsoft, when they had to deal with malware, was in denial for years. They thought it was the users' problem. Until they finally saw people switching to Macs (as I did) just to get away from all the crazy shit that was attacking Windows users.

In 2007, I couldn't believe Apple, a company that was selling itself as the more secure computer, wanted to keep my failed hard disk, one I had paid full price to replace, insisting it was theirs to refurbish. I couldn't accept that they would let all my personal information fall into the hands of who-knows-who, but that's what they proposed to do.

Apple is a company that desperately needs to grow up and wipe the smile off its face, and roll its sleeves up and start to appreciate that they're no longer the upstart, the underdog, the Crazy One in the Richard Dreyfus ad. They are The Man, the Boss, the one who, from now on, everyone is going to be taking shots at and shits on.

I use Macs. I'm typing this on a new 27-inch iMac. I stood in line to buy the iPhone, in the sweltering summer New York heat. I was pleased when Apple people came out to bring us bottled water. More of that Apple. More care and concern for the people who give you not only their respect and adoration, but also their money. The rules that apply to The Rest Of Us are about to apply to you. Time to get ready for it.

BTW, I am an Apple shareholder.
The points the author elucidates in this article sound about right to me. I have never been a zealot for any computer platform (well, I was heavily anti-Apple back in the days before OS X, and I changed my mind), but seeing any company enclose itself in an ivory tower of its own construction and then build a reality around it is always a disquieting sign.

Apple was doing well as a niche market for a good number of years, and then I guess the daily verbal fellatio Steve Jobs was getting went to his ego (I was going to say "head," but yeah). Thinking he's the epitome of awesome and is currently being touched all over by Electronic Jesus is the prelude to a fall, and a particularly nasty one.

Apple did a lot of good in its influence over the PC market over the past few decades. I fear that its influence will quickly be drawing to an end, because Apple forgot that they are merely one company, not an industry. We shall see.

Most iPhone owners have cases, and don't have this issue. It's overblown by a huge degree by the media, which generates page views for their sites. It'll die down as soon as something else comes out for them to buzz about.

...Dude, that's a really weaksauce excuse. This statement assumes that companies making inferior products that require after-market accessories to work properly is somehow normal.

Now, granted, the other view is "well, put a case on it, and it'll be fine" - which is true. The point though is that Apple screwed up, and instead of admitting fault and fixing it, they're trying to sneak around and do so on the down-low.

Yes, this is over a silly and stupid thing. However, if that's seriously your argument, then my question is this - what's the level at which a manufacturer's design flaw makes you lose enough confidence in the product to not buy it?

rhoenix, you're a young dude so I know this was probably before your time, but that actually happened to Job back in the 80s. That it has happened again, at a time when Apple is once again enjoying a lot of success, is to be expected.

If that's the case, then despite Jobs' ego, Apple's long-term lifespan is assured, no? Microsoft needs their tiny David as an aggressor, even if they have to bail them out to do it (as they did in 1997).

There's a press conference today. Apple is expected to either announce a re-design of some kind, and offer free exchanges to anyone with the old model, or offer free OEM cases (Bumpers) to anyone who asks.

It's completely unreasonable that you'd need a case to make the phone work properly, but I DON'T think it'll be this massive upheaval that the media is expecting. When people come in with their iPhone 4's, or come in to get one, and ask about the antenna issue all we say is "you need a case" and everyone goes "oh, I was planning on that anyway." The average person just doesn't care like that.

Has anyone been keeping up to date with the new Futurama? Let's just say they rip apart Apple and iPhones in a suitably hilarious fashion.

See, that's all I'm really looking for. An "oops, gimme that back so I can make it right" kind of thing.

This I don't disagree with, in any form.

The one thing I did disagree with was Apple not admitting fault about it. Given the other, more obvious example of corporate malfeasance (BP), being lumped in the same category would likely prove disastrous if not addressed quickly.

If Apple's press conference today dealt with it, great. As long as they owned up to it, I'm fine with it.

I have not - I really should catch up with Futurama. After I catch up on Avatar, and then Dr. Who, and then nBSG, and then Bones. Yes, apparently I have to prioritize my free time now.

Skip nBSG. It's worthless.

CYLON! CYLON! THROW HIM OUT AN AIRLOCK!

Seriously though, don't skip nBSG. While flawed, it's one of the best damn sci-fi shows ever.

nBSG suffers from two huge flaws

1) They lied when they said "they have a plan." When things finally get revealed, its clear they were making it up as they went and it shows.

2) They didn't know what to do after the New Caprica story arc.

There is some great acting and sometimes great writing to support the series, but the later part of the series isn't equal to the first two seasons.

It jives with what others have told me. The consensus pretty much was "the first two seasons of nBSG are awesome, everything after that sucks the pus out out of a constipated man's hemorrhoids."

I'm about to start s2, so we'll see.

Shit, this almost makes me want to see someone track down the dude who wrote Babylon 5, and make something like "nB5" with a much higher budget.

Trying to capture lightning in a bottle twice is pointless. Sure, B5 could use a face lift, the special effects are godawful, but that's about as much as I could stand. Any treatment to B5 that is similar to the reimagining of Battlestar Galactica would be disastrous.

And honestly, the finale left such a profound dissatisfaction in my mind about nBSG that I have forever sworn off it. I very nearly threw away the DVD sets I have, including the first two seasons, before I relented. Even now, I have absolutely zero desire to ever rewatch the show.

The first five or so episodes of season three were pretty decent too, as I recall it. After that though, the series became boring and I don't remember most of it.

As to Apple, they are evil and stupid. Their product might not be bad for some people, but it is really nothing spectacular. I hate hearing Apple and their fanboy's raving - I'd rejoice when that stops.

Hey guys, I too have a company whose design decisions I dislike! Obviously this represents both moral evil and abject stupidity on the part of tens of thousands of individuals, all of whom deserve thoughtless hate!

I've never, never been let down by a single Apple product, though of course I have not owned them all. I'm a big fan of their designs, their company, and their gadgets. Am I to take from the above that I am either abjectly stupid, worse than Hitler, or both?

I never ceased to be amazed at the depth of moral analyses one can derive from someone's preferences insofar as technological gadgets are concerned, after all.

And as to nBSG, I too was badly let down by the ending of the series, but not by most of the series leading up to it. Not to mention that some of the best episodes of the entire series take place in the third and even fourth seasons. I'd say that throwing out your earlier DVDs because you disliked the ending represents something of a severe overreaction, akin to burning your copy of the Lord of the Rings books because you didn't like the movies.

sorry i forgot only microsoft can be called evil

Well, either you're one of the people their products aren't so bad for, or you are indeed stupid, evil, and deserve a fate much worse than death.

I'm sorry, don't you mean Micro$oft? The '$' indicates of course that one is clearly on the cutting edge of humor and technological wit.

I would agree with you, that's why I didn't throw them out. On the other hand, I really have no desire to ever watch them again, so I might as well throw them out. Or give them away. The question is who can I inflict them upon, as I don't hate anyone nearly enough to do that to them.

Just to chime in and post this link to a video explaining how much the iPhone sucks. (link) It also provides a helpful tip about what to do with the antenna flaw.

I'm glad to say that I don't use it myself.

EDIT: whoops, here's the version with the subtitles (link).

Probably should make a separate post but are there devices like the iTouch with Wi-Fi capability and web browsing? I would love to use an Android or an iPhone but the cost of the extra monthly data plan that goes with them is nuts.
