Okay. So I got my new Gibson laptop (it's actually an HP Envy 17, but close enough), and on all accounts but one, it's awesome.

The one non-awesome thing is that whenever the laptop is placed into sleep mode (whether by closing the lid, or by other means), it will never show anything on the screen after it wakes.

To elaborate - when I bring it out of sleep mode, though I can type in my account password to unlock the computer (and hear the corresponding sound effect for it unlocking even), nothing ever displays on the screen, until the computer is rebooted.

This issue occurs at no other time. HP support was unhelpful, though all the usual things were checked - video card drivers, BIOS version of the motherboard, etc.

For the curious, I will provide whatever relevant information you wish. If I have to live with this, that's fine - I can just shut my laptop down before travelling with it instead of just putting it to sleep. However, it would be nice to have sleep as an option.

Two things to try:

Does hibernate mode work?

Also try killing your internet connection prior to entering sleep mode. Disable your wireless card and see if that affects it.

It appears to work, until it finishes Resuming Windows, and then gives the same blank screen as before, requiring a reboot.

Disabling the wireless card did not affect things.

I don't know if it'll work for you since I don't have it set to go to sleep mode when closing the lid but if I close and open it again, it'll work. (Happens on my Gateway but my bro apparently had this problem on HPs too.)

Probably somewhere along the line, it forgets to tell the screen to turn back on.

Tried the sleep trick Soontir, and nada.

My thought is that it somehow has to do with this laptop's two video cards. It has a built-in Intel Mobile HD graphics card for low-power, and an ATI Radeon 6850M for heavy lifting.

When I login after bootup, the screen does flash blank for less than a second - now, I presume this to be switching from the Intel at bootup to the ATI Radeon after login.

Given that the hibernation mode test above resulted in everything looking fine (during the Resuming Windows part) until it actually loaded the desktop, my thought is that it has to do with that.

However, the video drivers for both are up to date. Therefore, it has to be something else.

Thoughts?

Two video cards? That's....odd. And I've never heard of any system using two at once in a way that doesn't involve crossfire and/or multi-monitor support.

Disable the drivers for one.

- No video settings in the BIOS at all.

- Disabling the Intel video card in Device Manager caused all displays to go to the Windows default - 640x480, with no option to change.
