#1 Producers speak out over strike

Post by frigidmagi »

BBC
Producers hit by the Hollywood writers' strike have taken out full-page adverts pleading their case as the industrial action enters its second week.

The ads, published in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter on Monday, bore the heading "Setting the Record Straight".

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is seeking higher fees - or "residuals" - from work released on DVD or online.

But the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) said that writers were already well compensated.

"As the WGA knows and its own records will attest, writers are paid residuals on permanent digital downloads," the adverts read.

Writers also benefited from pay-per-view digital downloads, the AMPTP continued - part of a "record-breaking" amount paid last year to the WGA's West Coast members.

Picket lines

It also stated that a deal over streaming films and TV programmes online had been "on the table" when the Writers Guild went on strike last week.

The adverts in Monday's trade papers mark the latest salvo in an increasingly acrimonious dispute that has halted production on some of US television's top-rated shows.

Late-night talk shows have been forced to air re-runs, while real-time drama 24 has been indefinitely postponed to avoid broadcasting a partial series.

Stars have joined writers on picket lines, while others - among them cast members of the US version of The Office - have refused to cross them.

News writers employed by the CBS network may vote to join the strike later this week, the Associated Press reports.
You know what? Fuck the Producers, I'm with the Writers here. They're the lowest paid group out of the 4 of Actor(Way fucking overpaid if you ask me. Especially you Orlando Bloom! What the fuck was that shit in Pirates? I've seen better from monkeys!) Director (LUCAS!!!!) and Producer (wealthy fucks to a man). The writer should be paid more. Suck up you spoiled brats.

Fun fact: The average WGA member makes 5 grand a year. This is, of course, confined to his pay for work through the Guild(IE, professional writing for TV, film, etc).

i think it says something the Producers are taking out full page ads in the papers (notoriously expensive real estate to advert in, especially if you want anything beyond a teeny 3"x3" advert). and the Writers have to not only write their scripts, but aside from all but the most successful and proliferic, have to take other jobs just to make ends meet.

Yeah..fuck the producers, cut some of cash handed over to those overpaid hacks called Actors and the Producers.

The money those fuckers spent on full page ads could have been used to pay the fucking writers. What arrogant assholes.

The producers and studios would probably be more willing to give in if they didn't anticipate having to make even bigger concessions on those grounds to the actors (d'oh! - edit) and directors next year when those groups come up to negotiate their contracts.

If the writers get that thin slice of the pie.... well, the actors and directors will get the much bigger slices when the time comes. Hence why the studios wouldn't give in to every demand from the writers.

Not that I don't think the writers should get their fair share. It just means that the writers and directors will get their unfair share next year. C'est la vie.

Of course, what I wonder is.... with all the wannabes with scripts in their hands, you'd think Hollywood would have a plentiful supply of scabs.
