HEADLINE: 40 Taleban Rebels Reported Killed in Heavy Fighting

INTRO: U.S-led coalition and Afghan forces say they have killed at least 40 suspected insurgents in fighting that broke out Tuesday in southern Afghanistan. From neighboring Pakistan, Ayaz Gul reports.

TEXT: U.S military officials say the fighting broke out Tuesday in a mountainous district of the southern province of Kandahar, where coalition and Afghan forces were on a "search-and-attack" mission to eliminate rebel safe havens.

Local security officials say nearly 60 insurgents have been killed in the fighting. However, a coalition spokeswoman, Lt. Cindy Moore, puts the number at around 40 insurgents. She says an Afghan police officer was also killed in the initial clashes.

/// MOORE ACT ///

"They were killed in fighting southwest of Deh Chopan after Afghan and coalition units were attacked with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades Â… Coalition warplanes and attack helicopters hammered enemy positions throughout the evening."

/// END ACT ///

Five U.S soldiers and two Afghan policemen were wounded in the fighting, which reportedly lasted for more than 10 hours. Local officials say more clashes took place in the area on Wednesday, without giving further details.

The U.S military has vowed it will continue to pursue the insurgents. Provinces in southern Afghanistan were considered strongholds of the now-ousted Taleban regime.

Taleban militants have increased guerilla attacks in the past few months, killing hundreds of people. The violence has raised security concerns for parliamentary elections to he held in September. (SIGNED)

I can only say it's amazing that our troops don't get killed such as a situation here when they're only injured. They kick ass! *applauds*

You can chalk that up to a combination of superior of training, equipment (body armor), and firepower and of course immediate medical support.

Better training, better equipment, and yes, they do kick ass.

What they have done in Afghanistan, with the major logistical/situational nightmare that it represents, is nothing short of incredible.

It helps the other side files off the sites of their rifles to demonstrate their faith. Makes surviving a firefight easier.

Yeah, here's to the opposition staying as stupid as possible for as long as possible.

Seriously? :shock:

I second Petro. Let's keep them in the Celtic tribe charge into battle-naked-to demonstrate-their-faith style barbarism for as long as possible.

How does that demonstrate anything but stupidity?

I second (fourthed, by the look of it) the motion. There is nothing whatsoever to be gathered by doing so.

Foolish Infedal! Do you not know that Allah will guide the bullets of the truely faithful!

This goes back a long way Kendall. In the middle ages many refused to wear armor because only Allah could save a man. Clearly only a cowardly Frank would wear armor and try to deny the will Allah!

There's also the Children's Crusade, plague processions, and the Boxer Rebellion. It really shows the mind set of who we are dealing with. Supersticious barbarians with modern weapons.

Well whatever floats their boat and makes it easier for us to kill them is ok by me. But such awesome stupidity is truely hard to understand sometimes.

You wouldn't choose an illiterate, uneducated religious fanatic as your leader either. They are far, far removed from even a semi-secular westerner.

Thats probably why I have such a hard time understanding their logic (or lack of) as I'm pretty secular.

Perhaps this will help your frame of reference- ever serve with any gung-ho super patriots?

Now, remove from them any vestiges of modern education, to the point of believing that mystical forces really do make the world work, and that the object of their adoration is behind those mystical forces.
