Hollywood Studios to Sell Movies Online

By GARY GENTILE, AP Business Writer Mon Apr 3, 6:12 AM ET

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood studios will start selling digital versions of films such as "Brokeback Mountain" and "King Kong" on the Internet this week, the first time major movies have been available online to own.

The films can't be burned onto a disc for viewing on a DVD player. Still, the move is seen as a step toward full digital distribution of movies over the Internet.

Six studios said they would announce Monday that sales will begin through the download Web site Movielink. The site is jointly owned by five of the seven major studios.

Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and MGM will offer some first-run and older titles on Movielink. New films will be priced similar to DVDs â€â€

$20 says that within a month someone cracks the code so it can be burned.

Not even a fair bet. I'd bet that it would happen sooner.

Another MPAA's scheme to infect the consumers with DRM; to slowly influence the consumer's habit in such way that they will all eventually take DRM as the accepted norm. I wonder what happen if I re-format my entire hard drive and re-install my O/S; will I still be able to play the movie I have already paid a full DVD price for?

No thanks, I better buy DVD instead of downloading these shits.

So be it. If saying "NO" means being alone, then to hell with love, with romance, with marriage, and all the shit life keeps pumping at me. I'll walk alone, but with freedom and a healed pride.

NEVER buy a LiteOn CD/DVD Writer. Ever.

Ok...it's not the greatest thing...but it's a start...right?
Not even a start. It makes no sense to download a movie for the same price of a DVD sans all the extras, with the added disadvantage of not being able to play it on other computers that you, yourself, own, or to burn it to DVD to play it on a player you, yourself, own. So zealous is their fear of file sharing that they come up with an utterly retarded plan to combat it.

"You can download the movie as a file, but you can't share it." Why not? I can buy a DVD and share that, so you can fuck off.

I have a really bad feeling that combatting piracy is nothing but cover-up since the very start, while their true intention is to squeeze more of our hard-earned money out of our pockets in any imaginable ways possible. "Pay-per-view", anyone?

No shit, Sherlock.

It's always been about making money. It's the same reason the RIAA is trying to illegalise MP3-ripping or MP3 Downloads, it's because they don't make money out of it. It's always about money. It's the t-shirt of explanation. A one-size-fits-all reason why someone will be a genuine thieving criminal and be able to sleep at night; they can afford the massive amounts of sleeping pills.
