A church in Topeka, Kansas by the name of the Westboro Baptist Church, has for some time now picketed the funerals of soldiers. News articles of this can be found easily with a quick google search. Even their own website openly admits and encourages it, giving times and dates of funerals to go picket. Here. They've caused enough problems that a group of bikers has come together, the PGR(Patriot Guard Riders) who provide a blockade of sorts between the funeral and these demonstrators.

Their antics and protests have caused such a problem that the House has as of yesterday passed a new law banning protesters from military funerals. Link

A Michigan congressman's bill to halt antigay protests at military funerals passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday with an overwhelming bipartisan majority.

The Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Brighton Republican, is expected to be quickly taken up in the Senate and possibly signed into law before the Memorial Day recess. The bill passed 408-3.

The measure prohibits the controversial demonstrations at national cemeteries, mostly held by the Rev. Fred Phelps, pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. Phelps brings protests to military funerals in Michigan and across the country. Church members yell that the soldier's death is a judgment from God for the country's promiscuity and support of homosexuality. They holds signs reading "God Hates Fags."

The Patriot Guard Riders, a volunteer group of motorcycle riders, was created to guard funerals and drown out Phelps and the protesters.

The legislation "creates a bubble" of protection around military families, said Rogers, who said he has received 30,000 e-mails in support of the bill.

The measure was tightly crafted to avoid First Amendment challenges. It prohibits demonstrators within 500 feet of a military funeral 60 minutes before or after the funeral. Under the measure, fines include $100,000 and or up to 1 year in jail.

I've heard of this group before, the westboro church. Their website and beliefs are a source of internet humor for a lot of people. For a long time I had honestly believed them to be a fake, a made up organization for a sick parody site of sorts. But apparently I was wrong.

When I heard this story on NPR this morning driving home I damn near swirved off the road. I was shocked to say the least because honestly this was the first that I had heard of this particular group doing it. According to them, God kills soldiers because soldiers are fags, serving a fag ran government.

Their site is full of this shit, to include in their FAQ:

Here are some axiomatic matters of fact:

These turkeys are not heroes. They are lazy, incompetent idiots looking for jobs because they're not qualified for honest work.

They were raised on a steady diet of fag propaganda in the home, on TV, in church, in school, in mass media - everywhere - the two-pronged lie: 1) It's OK to be gay; and, 2) Anyone saying otherwise, like WBC, is a hatemonger who must be vilified, demonized, marginalized into silence.

Therefore, with full knowledge of what they were doing, they voluntarily joined a fag-infested army to fight for a fag-run country now utterly and finally forsaken by God who Himself is fighting against that country.

Phelps and his followers are fucking idiots, which deserve to be ground beneath some local militia's heel....

Of course though, we can't just eliminate them....but they've been doing shit like this for years and years...

Phelps and his inbreeding need to be dealt with, but sadly, you must never, ever touch them at a funeral. They'll sue and it funds their activities. Thankfully, folks like the Patriot Riders exist. They came down when Phelp's spawn came to this state.

So it's perfectly fine for them to go protest and demonstrate at other people's funerals, especially the ones that died to protect the freedoms that allowed them to do it in the first place, but if you demonstrate or protest against them they sue?

There's been a bunch of threads over in SDnet about this waste of breath and his inbred followers (All 100 members of the church are related to him by birth or marriage).

Most of his children are lawyers, for some reason... so if you try to get physical with them, or do anything that could be construed as 'violence', guess what. The little assholes sue you.

Where do they all come from, it must be like the fucking ant infestation in my house, you just cannot rid yourself of them! I suppose that the best way to rid your country of these pests is to make sure that you hire a perfectly gay solicitor who wears extravagent pink to sue them for Emotional Damages. (It would work in Britain, at least)

I know this, milady, I was merely expressing amazement that fanatics on this level actually exist. They're so bad that Fox News (video link) calls them insane!

They carry signs which say 'Thank God for 9/11!' and 'Thank God for Dead Soldiers!'

I will only say that they came to WV to protest at the funerals for the Sago Miners killed the beginning of this year.

My own brother got out his Harley and rode up to the funerals to make a stand against them. He and his IronPig buddies have tried to make any close funerals where the so-called Church is protesting ever since.

One of his granddaughters is in medical school. He must be feeling age catching up to him.

Anyway, this is the first you've heard about them? I went down to Evansville to picket the bastards a couple months back. They're a nasty bunch.

Phelps makes all of his kids lawyers so that they can all sue everyone else and protect him from everything he's done (for instance, child abuse to the point of nearly killing all of his children many times, and his long criminal record, which his children who haven't disowned him do in his footsteps). He was a lawyer until he was disbarred.

And just to make this clear: Westboro Baptist Church is **NOT** allied with any Baptist association. Not even the Southern Baptists will touch him, even before he began this latest round of shit.
