Fareed Zakaria from Newsweek wrote:
The national academies' report points out that China and India combined graduatre 950,000 engineers every year, compared with 70,000 in America; that for the cost of one chemist or engineer in the U.S. a company could hire five chemists in China or 11 engineers in India; that of the 120 $1 billion-plus chemical plants being built around the world, one is in the United States and 50 are in China.
Thoughts?
No link, I got it off another site.

They could just ban us on charges of heresy and burn us at the stake, ya know.
Besides, I thought you were doing it because you liked it.

That number for China and India sounds awfully high. Methinks lie exaggaration coming from our communist competors.
And raw numbers don't tell the whole story, even if they are true. The quality is probably lower than in the United States.

This isn't gospel so take it with a grain of salt but, well it seems the Chinese program is bit on the lightweight side at least according to the Chinese engineering students who I've spoken to here. Engineers turned out by the program are able to maintain various public works and such but not much else. Basically China is turning out these Engineers solely for government use and only for limited purposes. Most of the students claim that if you really want to do anything you have to go to the US or UK and study there.
Seems also that despite the absolute shit fest that is our primary education system our university system is still very well regarded in the world as well.
Now how much of this is college student bullshit and how much is actually what's going on? I don't have a fucking clue.
