MADRID (AFP) - Excessively skinny fashion models will be barred from a major Madrid fashion show later this month for fear they could send the wrong message to young Spanish girls, local media reported.

Madrid's regional government, which is co-financing the Pasarela Cibeles, has vetoed around a third of the models who took part in last year's show because they weigh too little.

The authorities collaborated with a Spanish health organisation to come up with a minumum body mass -- a height-weight ratio -- of 18 for the models.

Spanish daily ABC said it was the first time such restrictions had been imposed on a fashion show, although a recent wedding dress exhibition in Barcelona banned fashion models who took a dress size below 38 (British size 10, US size eight).

Several models at last year's show provoked a row when they claimed their careers would be under threat if they put on weight.

Organisers said they wanted to "help ensure public opinion does not associate fashion, and fashion shows in particular, with an increase in anorexia, a disease which, along with bulimia, is considered ... as a mental and behavioural problem".
Well someone had to do it. Those girls are starting to look more like famine victiums and crossed the line from attractive to WTF? over a decade ago.

10 cool points to Madrid.

Yes I know I'm a little late but I thought we could use some lighter news.

To the girls who were rejected, all I have to say is this:

"Oh, I'm so sorry. Come, lets drown your tears in a milkshake."

Truly Hotfoot you are a noble and compassionate soul to comfort the bereaved in their time of need.

Don't forget to add the hamburger.

Nah... a bit too greasy and fatty - might put them off... we're talking proper meals for these women - not something that you'd buy at McDonalds. On an ironic note, this does put "Cold Turkey" into a whole new perspective. Of course, they might prefer it cooked.

You know, I'm trying to think of a way to tell the followup joke without sounding too much like a caveman, so I'll leave it to the imagination concerning straws, milkshakes, and other actions.

But yes, we need to plump them up.

At this point, we'd probably need them to stop smoking (a lot of them smoke to keep their metabolism up and stay thin) and for them to take some antidepressants and get therapy. Many of them truly have anorexia (it's said that many modeling agencies deliberately recruit anorexics), and thus serious self esteem and body image issues.

For future reference of what constitutes 'good looks at a fashion show'

I'm going to say that this:

... is more attractive than this:

Why can't people see that rake-thin women are not only unattractive, but they are also very unhealthy.

It'd be interesting to see someone infiltrate one of those organizations and see if they do recruit anorexics specifically, but regardless, I've heard many horror stories about the mind games they play with the modelss.

What disgusts me is how some of these people starve themselves so far beyond the point of healthy, then get plastic surgery to augment their breasts, which of course have been reduced a fair amount to do lack of body fat. Talk about the Barbie Doll illusion.

While for the record I like the second dress a lot better than the first, I'm all for the ban. Anorexic (be it true or simply visually) models are a BAD thing.
Being that thin is NOT healthy and at least to me not the least bit attractive.
In fact that turns me down even more than piercings do (by several orders of magnitude, actually).
