Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former U.S. Attorney and Attorney General for Rhode Island, today sharply criticized the argument some Republican members of the Committee are making for delaying a vote on the nomination of Attorney General-Designate Eric Holder:

"Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have asked Eric Holder to make a commitment, before he is even confirmed, that he will not prosecute any Bush Administration officials for their involvement in acts of torture during the last administration.

"Anyone familiar with the criminal justice system - especially those with experience as prosecutors or judges - should know that a prosecutor should make no determination about who to prosecute before he or she has all the facts, and particularly not in response to legislative pressure.

"After all we have recently been through at the Department of Justice, I would hope and expect that upon calm reflection, no one on our Committee would expect the Attorney General of the United States to make prosecutive decisions based on legislative pressure."
Responsibility and accountability: The kryptonite of the current GOP.

Nail the bastards to the wall.

Otherwise, some jackass might get the idea that he or she can turn America into a monarchy. Apart from Darth Cheney, that is. We had a fucking revolutionary war as a middle finger AGAINST totalitarian power for governance of this country, and these douchebags apparently miss the idea of having a dictator.

If they like the idea so much, have them move to Cuba.

If this is the Senate Republicans' position, then, as a Republican, I say "Go fuck yourselves you gutless shitheads". Personal responsibility means standing up and taking the rap for the acts of TORTURE you were involved in. I hope the new attorney general crucifies the lot of them. Maybe then the party will clean house a bit.

I believe the GOP is on the road to a rebirth, though it's death throes are going to be ugly. Cleaving to the Bush/Palin line is likely to ultimately crush the overwhelming desire of the party's core, which is the simplest of motives and in many ways, profoundly pure. They want power. If in their desire for it, they banish these sorts of fucks, I cheer 'em on.

The death throes are not merely going to be ugly, but prolonged, I'm fairly sure. This level of corruption and moral/intellectual bankruptcy cannot be done away with in one election cycle. I expect them to run another arch-conservative wack job in 2012 and to get murdered when they do it. Only then will they begin to come around.

It took the Democrats 12 years to shed their extreme left, after all.
