I know that, Avian. I meant that the dragon was heading towards you in the air.

Man I hope the Royal Navy isn't the batch that grabbed that egg. Whoever did is likely to have a bad day.

Hey Havoc, what about having a pow-wow in orca? (Frostfell's bottlenose is so-so)

Glen Cook's Garret books are noir Private Eye detective books set in the fantasy city of Tunafare. Basically two kindgoms have been waging a generations long war over an area rich in silver (which can fuel major league sorcery). There's a universal draft. Garret did his five in the Marines. Women in Tunafare expect to lose some of their male relatives to the war. That's the way things are. As a result of the economic damage that losing a chunk of their male population, an immigration policy encouraging nonhumans to come to the city and work was put in place, which includes draft exemptions. Fast forward a number of years and you have little nonhuman neighborhoods and mixed breed kids and racial issues.

Garret works as a PI, solving various fantasy related mysteries. A small horde of exotic characters orbits Garret, who has a very noir PI attitude.

seems like a clever premise, although I have yet to find a "fantasy-mystery" series that I like. I find them a little too tongue in cheek frequently.

The noir keeps it from getting too cloying. It doesn't dwell on the dark, but there's enough nasty to keep it from getting too cute. Garret, for example, was raised by a single mother because his dad didn't survive his tour. His brother bought the farm as well and it killed his mother.

Another bit with an adolescent dwarf.

"Mister Garret, you gotta come help. We were guarding the place and we were attacked. My folks were beat up pretty bad."

"Alright Mindy. Give me your axe, your sword, and your shield and then run over to the guard shack and get Saucehead Tharpe and the boys."

"But what will that leave me with if I encounter trouble?"

"Your other sword, your daggers, you truncheon, your boots, your teeth, and whatever you have concealed in your trouseau. Now go."

You're shooting at the dragons who aren't attacking. They're just making big noisy, threat displays because they're looking for an egg. Now that they've been shot at, we're likely to have to fight four huge dragons which start at Frostfell's size and then go up. If we live through it, we'll be in no shape to take on Bismark.

So you are hereby awarded the Knights Cross by a greatful Fatherland.

Since no one else is shooting despite their being Lords of the Deep on deck and Frostfell yelled that they're looking for an egg, that excuse doesn't fly.

To be clear there was rationalization behind the response. It wasn't done out of Leroy Jenkins bravado*. Things are happening very fast, Allen is still a young captain, and Lt. Bennett is so overcome with awe at seeing something essentially step right out of myth that even his normal steadfast wisdom in draconic behavior is momentarily forgotten. The crew sees what is literally a mountain of angry dragon headed toward them and have no choice but to make their immediate reaction be an instinctive one. It makes the most narrative sense.

I concur with the narrative sense of the action. It is not incumbent on a player to metagame the most advantageous reaction to a situation, but to portray actions that make sense given the circumstances. Had Avian not done this, I would have rolled dice to determine if the gunners on the nearby ships did the same thing.

I'm not saying it's bad rpging to open fire, I'm saying there's good reason and supporting evidence not to. I'm also saying this is going to suck.

I'm agreeing that this is going to suck.

I am also saying that those dragons in flight, with the Lord bearing down upon them, probably didn't hear Frostfell's roar ... or worse misheard it.
This is why the dragons have Radios, to (hopefully) prevent mishaps like this. But once the gun's fired, there's no taking back the shot. Those in the air are about to get smacked around.

Look, who is the blood thirsty, murder luster among us?

*Frostfell raises his claw*

So obviously if he isn't fighting, fighting is a bad idea.

Looks like you guys accidentally stumbled into a Total Party Kill.

Now if that weren't the case, I would be curious to see what the offspring of a Spitfire and a Turkish Kazilik would be. Probably on the heavier end of Mediumweight?
