I don't know if this should go here in this forum, or how to spell 'nettiquette'.
Ok I'm thinking of a Space Opera RPG, to be put online. But that last time I tried something like this, I said I would do all the dice rolls. I found that it took too much time and it drained a lot of the fun out of it. However, I used an online 'random number generator' instead of actual dice, because at the time I didn't have dice. Now I do.
So here I ask you: what would you do? Would you use dice and say "hah, I'm the GM suck it up" or what? Trust those players when they say "I rolled two twenties - in a row! Ooops, THREE twenties! I'm on a roll here."
Any ideas? And how do I spell 'nettiquette' anyway? Is that even a word?

I believe it's 'netiquette' with a single t. And Merriam-Webster knows it so I say that makes it a word.
Well, if you make all dice rolls, you prevent cheating on part of the players but have to roll a lot of dice, depending on the number of players.
If you let the players make them, especially if there are a lot of them, you're workload gets greatly reduced but you risk them cheating.
So I guess it would depend on
a) the number of players, and
b) how much you trust them.
4-6? I don't really see a problem, especially as online games are somewhat slower paced than tabletop ones usually.
Say, 10 and up? Dice rolls galore.
Of course, how dice intensive that game woild be also plays a part.

If it's a forum game, you'll just have to either make the rolls or trust your players. If it's a chat game, then you can go with various chat dicebots and chat setups equipped to use them.

Chat setups aren't the best thing, because I live in a different timezone to most people. Thus, it gets somewhat difficult to plan a session if people are living on one part of the world while others live on opposite ends. With a forum game, people can reply at their leisure.Petrosjko wrote:If it's a forum game, you'll just have to either make the rolls or trust your players. I am goint to write a small dice program for forums where the dice bot will post the results in the forum. I should have a basic thing ready in about a week on my little board. With some work, think I can make it a registered user and post on other boards remotly.
I'll keep you informed of my progress.

Another suggestion, whenever you need to make a dice roll, do it in a chat forum, take a screenshot and post it for validaty if its a special roll. Applies to both GM and players.
