#1 Advertisement for RPG

I'm putting this up here because I'm not sure where else to put it. I'm letting it be known that I have an idea for a space opera RPG, and I'm gauging the level of interest from people who frequent Librium Arcana. Anyone? Any questions?

It would depend on the time investment. If you're talking multiple lengthy posts a day, I couldn't keep up.

If it was every day or two, that I could probably handle.

That's probably it. A couple posts a day at most, no need to write a novella every day.

I'm new to forum-based RPGs, actually. I tried one last year but it wasn't successful. Mainly due to not having the right players (well to be frank, two players rubbed me the wrong way, the others were good - Jedineophyte was one of them).

I think I will, and another couple guys too. For those who have already posted their interest, can you tell me a bit about yourselves and your roleplaying preferences? What you look for in a game, what you like, what you dislike, etc?

Bosoms. Definitely lots of heaving bosoms...

Seriously though, I tend to favor games that beat the ever-living shit out of my characters, sort of a Die Hard style of play.

Just ask Cynical Cat. ;)

As for the game structure itself, I like the environment to be as realistically done as possible. The scope and scale can vary from the characters being hopeless peons on the run (a la Firefly), or epic figures influencing events on a grand scale (a la Dune). Just so long as there's a certain realism to it. I loathe the Monty Haul style of accumulating more toys, and endless bug hunts and leveling up.

Other than that, I'm pretty easygoing.

I want to believe the world and the characters. There should be enough consistency in it and in the behavior of the inhabitents that I can suspend disbelief.

Despite loving mega powerful wizard types, I prefer fallible characters. Men and women with flaws and weaknesses as well as skills and powers who are not omnicompetent.

If you want to slog through the 40K RPG at SD.net you have a lot of examples of how Petro and I play.

I hope this answers you questions.

Awww, I feel all warm and fuzzy now. :mrgreen:

Anyways, I'd be moderately interested as I've got a good chunk of time on my hands until I head out to college in fall. While I expect the imminent arrival of my copy of Battlefield 2 to devour most of my time, it may be a little too intensive for catalepsean node trances so this would be ideal and I'm rambling by now.

Count me in.

I like a healthy mix of intellectual-based roleplaying situations like politics and intrigue and the classic carnage-filled dungeon crawl. And, I must admit, I do like ph4t l00t (guilty pleasure, eh). I prefer playing a single character and developing his/her personality and quirks rather than many individuals, though I'm by no means opposed to the latter.

I'm also a shameless 40k nut and its style and atmosphere often rub off, yielding relatively gothic and/or dark characters.

Er Gaius, due to my upcoming holiday, the game will probably start around late-July. Possibly even August. Just letting you know. My recruiting drive may be a bit pre-emptive, but I felt it's necessary to get players as quick as possible.

I might have The Morrigan and Mr Flibble from SDnet as well as The Prime Necromancer (if he gets my PM and replies; he's got plenty of time to do so :)). I'll take everyone's comments to heart.

Eventually I'll pull my finger outta my arse and post some information about the setting and so on.

It could help speed things along if you asked specific questions though, to kind of kickstart the creative process.

Okay, general information on the history, political structure, is this science fiction world derived from Earth, is it in the near future or far future, what's the tech like, are humans still basic H. Sapiens.

May as well start posting my comments/questions in here, to save Stofsk having to explain things twice.

I too wouldn't mind some more info on the setting for the game in general. Like is it going to be focused on a particular planet/system, or more of a sprawling arrangement like in SW?

Is it set around some future version of Earth, or in a far-flung galaxy which happens to have a humanoid population?

What is the state of civil rights/politics? For example, are the civilisations technologically advanced, but mostly retain a feudal form of government? Is there one over-arching form of government, or do individual plantets/systems look after their own affairs? You mentioned in a PM that there were to be three playable species. How do they interact? Is there a dominant species which oppresses the others or are they all on more or less equal footing?

Um. That will probably do for the moment.

Also, some info on the third species (the one with the working title 'Akrek') would be appreciated, as you come up with it. One particular question which has been playing on my mind is "Can my character have purple skin and/or dreadlocks?" Clearly this question is of of crucial importance.

Detailed history and setting info will have to come later, but I can answer this question right now: there will be a lot of systems you could go to, but if you just wanted to stay on one system in particular that's cool too. In short, it's up to the players. But there will be more than one system to visit, definitely.

Undecided.

What seems likeliest though will be a far flung section of the galaxy, with Earth a memory, though a distant one.

Technology varies from place to place. Some planets/systems will have halos and skyhooks and get around with maglev trains, while others will get around in steamships.

Politics will also vary from place to place. Some places will be liberal democracies, other places will be theocratic regimes, still other places will be corporate plutocracies, authoritarian regimes etc. Civil rights can be graded accordingly.

The overarching government is the Commonwealth, which can be described as a confederation for the purposes of trade. Each individual planet looks after itself. There is no FTL communications or sensors. Word travels as fast as the fastest ship. This necessitates autonomy in individual worlds.

The Commonwealth controls the space between the stars. Which means they protect trade and communications (the latter is far more important - colonies will always try to reach a goal of self-reliance and self-sustainability, whereas communication must be maintained. This doesn't mean trade isn't important, because it is - some worlds are poor in uranium, and it can be easier to simply buy it from a freighter than explore the surface looking for a spot to dig, for example - but communication is very important, because it's so slow.), and the Commonwealth Navy patrols against pirates or mercenaries.

Some worlds are pretty much an Amish's dream - zero in the way of high technology. If you want slaves for whatever reason, it would be a simple matter to fly down and abduct a village that's helpless. Each individual system or planet more or less governs itself.

If you take the real-life Commonwealth as an anlogy (why not? I chose to base it on the RL Commonwealth), this is the remnant of a sprawling Empire that is now gone. So there was once a more autocratic rule over the worlds, but now that's given way to a more liberal "Do whatever you want" thing, so long as trade and communication are safe and secure. That means regimes like Zimbabwe exist in the setting, but are tolerated because really, the Commonwealth is not in the business of nation building. That said, mercenaries often get involved in that practice (think of mercenary companies in the modern world working in hotspots that were once former colonial possessions).

There are Humans, Chel'noirn, and Akelli.

Humans and Akelli look remarkably similar and share DNA with each other, leading to speculation that one is an offshoot of the other (earth is a distant memory, and there is the equivalent of creationists in this game, who think life didn't start on Earth).

Chel'noirn are saurians. Y'know, reptiles. Walking reptiles. :) They're nice. Well, if you piss them off they're not. Chel'noirn have their own races. Copperheads and Albinos are the two I've thought up, with the latter being persecuted by the former. Albinos are basically white scales red eyes. Copperheads ... well, it's pretty easy what that means. Head... is copper. Yeah. There are others though.

Akelli are humanoid and are similar to Twi'leks or Orion slave girls from Star Trek. They appear human except have different skin colours. Yes, purple is one skin colour. I don't know if I should give them hair yet. If I gave them lekku I might get sued. ;)
