#1 Favorite Settings or Styles of Games

Post by Hotfoot »

In the vein of my previous thread, now I ask you all what sorts of campaigns do you prefer or really like to play in/run. Personally, I prefer modern/sci-fi games by and large, with a heavy focus on reality. I don't mind if it takes a few liberties, but I like having two feet on the ground.

I enjoy fantasy as well, but I've yet to play a game with a magic system that I really liked. D&D's system works, after a fashion, but I almost never play a caster primarily because I don't like the system.

My favorite actual setting is Heavy Gear. Terra Nova is one of the most richly detailed worlds I've ever had the pleasure of gaming with. Following behind is Cyberpunk, with Forgotten Realms and RIFTS behind that. RIFTS always amazed me as it had fantastic sci-fi and magic, something I think can work if done right, and RIFTS is one of the better attempts I've seen so far. Forgotten Realms, well, I loved Baldur's Gate, and as a result, loved the setting. I never actually got to play a game in that setting, aside from BG though.

I love the Traveller game system and the ideas it has for its setting. Because chargen should be lethal, and computers ought to weigh 5 tons dammit. And swords in space may not be super-ultra-hyper practical, but it is fun.

I like to play in settings I've worked on. That way I don't have to follow 'canon' but it can be a headache, and the problem I have right now is getting motivated. I have a poster sized starmap that's begging to have detail added, but I just can't get off the damn chair and add those details. I should also be working on some art for the game, but again I just can't motivate myself.

Aside from Traveller and scifi I also like D&D but its been awhile since I've actually played it.
