#1 Green Lantern/Corps of Light RPG?

Post by Steve »

I've never run one of these, I'm just curious as to if anyone would be interested in running an RPG using the Green Lantern mythos. Either everyone playing GLs or people being permitted to come up with members of the other Corps.

I admit to having Green Lanterns on the brain a bit.

I'm interested, I'll work a concept up.

Dependant on if we go pure GLC or if we utilize the Crayola Corps....I'll have some concepts.

I'd... consider this. But if I did, I'd wish to play a character associated with another color. If that's all right, I might throw something together.

If I do however, you are all going to hate me and it. This is because I hate everyone.

Well, it is why I put "Corps of Light" on there, in case someone wanted to have another corps like violet or yellow.

Basic Concept:

Name: Augustinus, of the House of Medici
Born: Florence, 1470
Cast unwillingly forward in time and space by nearly five hundred years:1504
Prior Occupation: Sorcerer within the house of Medici from 1485 to 1494, Served as a mercenary under Cesare Borgia from 1494 to 1504

Basic history: As a cousin (a few times removed) to Lorenzo de Medici, Augustinus was educated within the church, but refused to take holy orders. Instead, he secretly immersed himself in the study of Witchcraft, a power he had inherited from his father's line, which he used in order to defeat the enemies of his house. Namely, he worked tirelessly to defeat the schemes of those under the spell of the sorcerer-priest Savonarola, who would see the great city of Florence cast back into the misery and despair of an earlier age. He was successful in this, largely through sheer force of will and determination--which permitted him to erect a powerful ward against mind-magic in the city-- until Charles of France forced the capitulation of Piero de Medici. Feeding upon the suffering caused by forced billeting of 20 thousand troops, as well as the financial levy, Savanarola was able to intensify the powers of his own magic, overwhelmed the wards placed over the city by Augustinus and induced the ousting of the Medici.

During the Exile, Augustinus knew that the only way he could help his family regain power--and thus facilitate the continuation of all that which he loved, he would need to attach himself to those with the desire to end Savonarola's reign. To this end, he offered his services to Cesare Borgia, in exchange for the services of a sorcerer, the Borgias would assist him in finding a way to break Savonarola's hold over Florence. This was accomplished through the finding of an old hermetic text "De Nomine dolor Cogitationes de magia circa" in the library of the Vatican. However, even with the priest deposed by popular revolt when people finally came to their senses, they simply re-established the name and form of their pre-Medici republic, and Augustinus would never see his own family return to power--though it did occur, in 1512. He still owed service to Cesare, who he faithfully served with every ounce of dedication he could bring to bear until happenstance ended their arrangement.

The Pope died in 1503, and in 1504 Borgia was exiled to spain, where he was imprisoned. Augustinus helped get him escape, but a magical mishap occurred when he was attempting to magically sidestep a volley of crossbow bolts, and he was catapulted forward in time over five hundred years.

This was somewhat of a culture shock.

He now lives in a world of motor vehicles, computers, and automatic firearms where he has no identity, no family, and no ties to anything but his own ideals, which is a silver-lining. At first, he feared he would be destitute, then he realized that the florins he carried were disgustingly valuable as--of all things--collectors items, and as museum exhibits. Granted, during the transactions, and most other interactions he was forced to engage in, he was thought of as insane. It is what happens when the dialect of english you speak is somewhat archaic. One of those transactions was the acquisition and restoration of Bannerman Castle on the Hudson River into a proper dwelling for one of the Medici. It was of course decorated with artwork, armor, and in fact turned into a proper fortified dwelling. The rest of his funds were, in proper Medici fashion, wisely invested. Bribery, a skill cultivated in childhood, helped immensely in establishing a fake, but otherwise completely legal forged identity which maintained his full name.

After familiarizing himself with the advances in art, science, philosophy and literature as best he could (and learning how to speak modern english, albeit only when he is forced by circumstance, his latin is still better), he went to school and earned a degree in Medieval and Rennaisance History, because the irony amused him, and he had certain a priori knowledge to offer.

Given that his ability to use sorcery was not at all diminished in this modern era. That which he loved did not at all change: knowledge, art, music, inventions, prosperity. These things he would preserve and foster, with a mailed fist if necessary, to this dedicated himself both publicly and... with cloak and dagger with a certain uncanny zeal. This of course, extends equally to the preservation of life, as without life none of the good things a living person might accomplish can ever exist. In 16th century italy, sometimes lives would need be sacrificed to achieve this end, but this new modern age is not systemically brutal, and as a result, Augustinus finds this particular expediency far less necessary than it once was.
