"All terms are relative, Tech-Captain. A 'liberal' tech priest in this case is one that wishes to discover the great secrets of the Machine God and spread his glory to all mankind. In other words, curious, less secretive and experiment minded. Often marginalized. Very hungry for new information and the status that presented rediscovered archeotech will bring them."

'As for schematics," Jolan tuned towards Gard Vikal, "doctor?"

"With pleasure Inquisitor. I can have a download on data crystal for the good Tech-Captain's perusal in half an hour. Longer if he would prefer another medium."

"The data-crystal would be ideal. A spare copy for my Brothers would be good, but we can discuss that when negotiations are made for their assistance." Malkamar bowed formally. "Thank you, Doctor."

"Now. This plan. We gather these Lictors onto a ship and 'leave breadcrumbs'. I somehow doubt this is anything quite as pleasant as ejecting giant killer Xenos into hard-vac to be found. And do we have these Tyranids, or will we be going on a bug-hunt?"

A number of black-suited figures, dressed in carapace armour and large, Kasrkin-style helmets, followed the Astartes, dragging a series of boxy, rectangular containers on hover fields. Minutes later, they entered the guest areas, making for Inquisitor Novum's quarters.

"Bug hunt, of course Tech-Captain," replied Jolan. "The plan is to seed a few modified Lictors, who will be emitting strengthened signals, on a few useless planets well above the galactic plane. The hive fleet will be drawn by these abnormally strong signals and we will blaze a trail into the Eye of Terror, via one of the smaller, less reliable routes. This, of course, means carrying a large cargo of deadly Lictor Vanguard Organisms, which is a disaster waiting to happen."

The Astartes peeled off, making for their designated quarters and followed by a single box of unspecified equipment. The rest of the procession entered Pater's room and assisted Gyllia and Joritu in setting up their cargo.

"...a call to marshal valor," Prius dictated. "And an opportunity to strike a great blow against the enemies of the Emperor. It would be the greatest of honors to serve Him on Terra at the side of the," he paused "Insert the chapter name here, once more." he informed the scribe. "I remember well our battles together, break for a reference to my service with members of the chapter, and know that with faith and resolution, victory will come to us once more in this most holy and sacred of tasks."

Thirteen chapters would be receiving these notifications. Assuming a quarter to half would be willing to donate resources, this would be a mighty contingent indeed.

"Let us be honest and open, Inquisitor," If Malkamar was aware that was a ridiculous thing to expect from one of the Ordo's Finest, he wasn't showing it. "It's one of many. We're using an unreliable route through barely mapped space into the Eye Of Terror, with the Hive Fleet behind us."

"One could quibble about the exact nature of the route, but yes, you are essentially correct. It's extraordinarily dangerous. And the benefits to the Imperium are very, very great."

"The potential to tie up the Traitor Legions and the Tyranids for an extended period would take immense pressure off the Imperium, yes." Malkamar nodded. "Not to mention potentially weakening both to the point we can deliver killing blows. But if I didn't think it had at least a modicum of a chance, I wouldn't be here. And if I didn't think it was dangerous enough to merit the help of an Astartes with a mind for technology, I wouldn't be here either."

Jolan nodded. "I see you have an excellent grasp of the situation Tech-Captain. I think we shall work well together. Do you want to meet the rest of my colleages now or later?"

"My colleages are in the nearby suites. Feel free to visit them at your leisure. Be polite to the Men of Iron patrolling the corridors. They have sharp tongues or the machine equivalent. Let's see, you've met Hethor and Gard. The young lady behind me with the hand cannon is my interrogator Lydia Meradin. The very beautiful and very intelligent Melina Sevall is resting, as is my astropath Iriza Vess. The practically invisible man lurking in the corner is Danell Keys."

"I commend Master Keyes; while I could smell him, I could not hear him." Malkamar admitted, nodding slowly. "And smell cannot direct bolter rounds. Men... Of Iron? You are.. Surely jesting. Or a reference to those vi-.. Er.. The 'Servitor' creatures I've heard of." The disgust at the practice of cyborging humans for Servitorhood is obvious, but he tries to cover it. It fails badly.

"I mean Men of Iron. Legendary, intelligent constructs from the Dark Age of Technology. Our initial source of the archeotech. They are rather prickly about their intellectual capabilities. I would avoid comparing them to mind wiped servitors."

"Golden Age Men..." Malkamar shakes his head. "No sir! They are not at all like those meat-puppets!" He saluted, with newfound overawe. Men of Iron! Surely the Emperor is rewarding him for this glorious suicide charge, granting him a few moments in the presense of the greatest technology Mankind ever made!

"Yes, it was fortunate that we managed calm the situation and cooperate, given the initial circumstances of our encounter. But we have benefited greatly from their knowledge and have worked to distribute the archeotech without attracting the ire of the Adeptus Mechanicus."

Pater's quarters were becoming a hive of activity as his equipment was installed. Cables dangled from the high ceiling, cogitators and odd devices lined the walls. In the centre of the room was the holoprojector, the large galactic map rotating slowly above it.

Byron coughed metallically into Pater's ear. "Sir, there appears to be an Inquisitorial Thunderhawk making planetfall. Not one of ours, either."

Pater looked at the little A.I. "Identity?" He asked. It could be anybody, but caution insisted he assumed it was a foe.

"It's Lord Ronathal's beacon, sir."

"Tyran?" Pater was nonplussed. "He is still with the fleet."

"It's one of his subordinates, Sir. She says she will only divulge further information to you."

Pater paused, then nodded. "Prepare a small escort. I shall meet this woman when she lands."

Théo Cantor waited as the Thunderhawk descended smoothly under the expert hand of Ronathal's pilot. The vessel came to a gentle rest and, although she gave no outward signal, she was relieved, even if temporarily.

For the moment, it was one small victory preceding what would hopefully amount to another.

Leaving Ronathal's men with the task of retrieving what few belongings she'd collected, as most of it was battle-exclusive and useless for the moment, she readied herself for the posse that would undoubtedly come to meet her.

Overhead, a screaming engine indicated the descent of another Thunderhawk inbound.

"Inquisitor," said a soft voice came through the vox.

"He's busy," Lydia replied. "What is it, Captain Kay?"

"A Thunderhawk is descending on your position. From Novum's ship."

"Intersting. Thank you Selanon."

"You're welcome Interrogator."

"Alright, time to show Jolan what I can do." The rangy woman through on her great coat and battle glove before heading out.

From the tower a mountainous, obviously near-inhuman figure strode. Adorned in simple, nondescript robes, he stood and watched as the second Thunderhawk descended, weapons elevated to non-threatening posture, then made his way toward it.

The ramp on the Thunderhawk slid open scant seconds after it grounded, similar massive figures trotting out, weapons at ready.

Astartes, bearing the colors of the Deathwatch, the elite anti-xenos Marines seconded to the Ordo Xenos, the only distinction among the helmeted figures being slight variances of height and the individual chapter markings on their shoulders.

Prius strode toward them as they formed a line, port-arming their massive bolters, a senior sergeant striding forward to meet him.

From the shuttle, the woman watched as the hulking Space Marines lined up behind their ranking officer, who for the moment was regarding only the Inquisitor as opposed to her vessel.

Although Théo knew little, if anything, of the Deathwatch, she recognised the figures not by their insignia or colouration, but by their mythology. Not welcomed figures on Terra, although she'd heard little of exactly why.

She remained in composure, however, and asked no questions, the only sign that she noticed at all being a slight clenching of her jaw.

Prius accepted the salute with a courtly nod. "Brother Sergeant, please join me inside. The task we face is of grave import."

"In matters involving the Inquisition, I expect nothing less, Commissar."

A small token of respect, almost affection between the two, the usage of his old title on the battlefield rather than his position. Prius pivoted on his heel as the Deathwatch flanked him, the Sergeant falling into step beside him. It was not parade drill, with matched steps- the Astartes didn't bother with such frippery. It was a formation from which they could lay down fire against any threat from any angle.

Even here, in the safest of havens, the vigilance of the Astartes did not wane.

A lean woman emerged from the interior. She wore a long, dark coat over a body glove. She was light skinned, with short cut dark hair and a hard stair. She wore metal reinforced gloves and a fancy pistol in a custom rig on her right hip. She seemed to be drinking everything in.
