"The preferred method of consumption is injection or ingestion, and no reported cases of blackout being smoked have come up. Some puritanical members of the Inquisition have suggested that this is because the purifying effects of flame reduce the effects, but most aren't convinced. If you really want, you might be able to get some second or third hand filtration plugs out of the quartermaster though," Yalt says.

The commissar's attitude . . . grated. Get secondhand filtration plugs from a PDF quartermaster when they were potentially facing a threat of this magnitude? That was the resources he was willing to offer? It was almost . . . obstructionist.

Second or even third hand that may be worn to uselessness? Arl hoped the quartermaster would actually have first-hand filter plugs and replied as appreciative as he could managed, "I will definitely put the quartermaster to use." (And fleece him of all I can, for sure.)

"Very well. This briefing is adjorned. Report back to me when you find something of interest," Yalt says before he and Jonas leave the conference room.
A few nervous and sweaty looking PDF troops then come into the room and show the acolytes about the base, first to the barracks they were assigned to, mercifully several floors down and away from any windows, producing an environment that was over-warm rather than sweltering. The long barracks had obviously not been occupied for some months and had a slightly stale, musty smell to them, although all the dust had long since settled and been swept away by cleaners. The acolytes were told that they basically had the run of the entire level, including the officer's rooms for the barracks, until the next regiment was mustered up for the Guard, which was expected sometime within the next few months.
They were also shown to the quartermaster, a stocky, swarthy fellow with arms like slabs of grox meat and a forehead that looked like it could be used as mining equipment. He took one look at their irregular wear before he said, "You must be our special guests... let us see here... yes. You have one care package waiting for you, special order. I'll also need to know your weapon specs so that I can scrounge up the right ammo for you. Can't say we've got much at a base like this, but I've been told by Yalt to get you what I can, so that's what I'll do. You'll certainly be better off than the last group."

"And what, praytell, happened to the last group," Sebastian asked, after greeting the quartermaster.

"Uh... that's really the commissar's business, I've probably said too much already," the quartermaster mumbles, clearly not wanting to say anything more without coersion.

Sebastian gave the man his best smile. "You are right, of course. I will ask him directly, " he said.

Sweat not from the heat beading on the quartermaster's brow, he stutters, "Err... ah... no need to do that, I don't think he likes to be bothered with stuff like that, and he never exactly told me to keep it quiet. Uh... well, maybe I can tell you. You see, about... oh, a year or two ago there was another group of... different... people coming into the base. I don't know what they were doing, nor do I want to know for you, just that they came in here and the commissar asked to make sure I gave them plenty of ammunition and help out where I could, but that I was uh... not to authorize the release of any of the few pieces of better gear we had at the time, which wasn't much since a newly minted Guard regiment had just cleaned us out; we have a bit more in stock now. Anyway, he said that uh... please don't get angry... he said that he's seen groups like that before and they weren't worth throwing good equipment after until they had proven their worth. He said the same to me this time... not that I have any good equipment... or at least not much that would fit you."

The quartermaster pauses for a moment to gather together his thoughts, ticking off his fingers before a pained look comes over his face and he says, "No, I suppose I didn't say what happened to them... that's because I don't know. One day they just didn't return to base. A week later the commissar ordered all of their gear packed up and shipped off to some unknown location. They might have died, they might have been transferred, they might have promoted. I don't know what happened.
"As to what I have... most some flak armour that won't fit most of you very well... about the only thing I have in great abundance are flak helmets. I have a few Pattern IIIs, but they're all still here because they were training models that don't fire right. I'm getting a new shipment of gear in about a month... and I uh do have a decent quality melta... but you would need the base commander or the commissar to personally sign off on letting that out, and I'm pretty sure the commissar would get pissed if you tried to go around his back and he would find out quick since he and the commander liason at least once a day," the quartermaster explains nervously.

"I see," Sebastian said. "In any case, thank you, my friend."
He unholstered his pistol and handed it to the quartermaster. "Got anything for this?" he asked. "I think I will also take the helmet, just in case."

Taking the weapon offered by Sebastian, the quartermaster whistles, checks the magazine, and says, "Hecuter? Nice gun. I think I have the right calibre for these anyway. And let me see here... yeah, a size 8 ought to do it for you." Handing the gun back to Sebastian, the quartermaster then wanders back into the armory, closing the door behind him to make sure he's not followed. He then returns with a double handful of helmets, one for each of those without one. "I think these sizes ought to work. Too bad they don't have integral vox units, but this is a PDF armoury, we don't even get microbeads as standard issue unlike the Guard."

Sebastian accepted the ammo and the helmet gratefully. "Thank you, and may the Emperor and the Saint watch over you." He muttered a short benediction.

Nihilous took out his compact laspistol. "Any charge packs for this?" he asked. "While we're at it any grenades, auspexes, laspistols, photovisors, or data slates that you can give us?"

Kyona also set her own, full-size laspistol on the counter, while she picked up one of the offered helmets and tried it on for size. Again, she had little to say, but heard every word; the bionic eyes unblinking. The opaque discs did not swivel, had no pupils, and thus it was hard to tell where Kyona might be looking. It was rather like mirrored shades in that manner....
She took off the first helmet with a frown at the fit, and picked up another. That one she took off, tugged at the inner straps and tried it on again, until she got a half-decent fit.

Atellus attempted to suppress a smile as he watched the female witch try and fit her helmet properly. He set his Guard issue lasgun and sidearm onto the Quartermaster's counter, "bayonet as well please, if you have one" and then turns to the female witch.
"Want some help?" He asks, indicating her helmet.

Kyona's head turned to Atellus, and she removed the helmet again. "Please... I'm not that familiar with them," she admitted, offering the helmet to him.

The quartermaster looked down in disgust at the compact laspistol Nihilous had placed on the counter and said, "I thought they only issued those things to diplomats and merchants as backup weapons. If you want I can get you a full sized one, something with a bit more kick to it. You'll have to go through the process of signing it out... or... well, if you want I can take that las-pointer of yours and make a few swaps with some other quartermasters and the like so that my inventory balances for the next review."

Arl had a suspicion the quartermaster had more back there than he would let on but relented and followed suit with the others making a list of what he could use in his mind. He placed his autogun on the counter, "I'll need a few clips of this. If you have a respirator mask, recoil gloves, glow-globe, magnoculars, or a drop harness back there, I'll take'm."

"Excellent," said Nihilous. "A simple swap will suffice."

Taking up Nihilous' compact lasgun and checking the safety and the power pack, the quartermaster nodded and said, "Sure thing, give me a second here..."
Before he could leave though, he heard Arl's request, which caused him to turn back to the acolyte and give him a look of utter contempt before he said, "If I had that sort of gear back there, I would be the quartermaster of a grenadier regiment, not a PDF base. I think we have some respirators back there though... let me take a look."
Tromping off back into the armoury, the door locking closed behind him, the quartermaster returns a few minutes later with a big bag full of ammunition and respirators, along with a full sized laspistol. Putting the bag on a nearby table, he pulls out the ammo and says, "There, that's about as much as I can let go, should give each of you another two reloads for your main shooters. The respirators... eh... they're supposed to be for training purposes, which is to say that they are a bit old and their seals aren't as good anymore, but they'll still work in a pinch so long as you're not going up against truly nasty shit."

Atellus takes Kyona's helmet and inspects the chin strap and internal padding, "piece of cack" he mumbles to himself while moving a few bits around. Without asking permission he plops it back on her head and cinches down the chin strap before giving it a few hard knocks to see if it sits right.
Nodding to himself he tells Kyona, "should be better know. At least it'll keep your brains in if you take a hit."
With a nod of thanks to the Quartermaster, he retrieves his kit and wanders over to Sebastian.
"Want to find some food, before we head out?"

Sebastian examined the respirator gingerly, then takes it with a sigh.
"I know of a good place, not far from here," he nods at the guardsman. "But first, there is something I need to do."
