#1 You have the One Ring...

Post by Hotfoot »

...or some other item/power that has similar effects. You don't realize that the item has a corrupting affect on you - you may know it's possible, but you are either under the impression you are immune, or you believe you can withstand it for long enough. The Ring gives you power. It's not unlimited, but it's enough to let you change the world if you want.

Ultimately, when faced with this power and the seductive call of the evil that is inside us all, what will start your descent into evil? Where do you falter, and your good deeds become acts of pure evil? What is your greatest sin?

So post what you would do with the power, then where you would lose sight of the line between what is good and what is evil.

I seriously have to ask how the fuck should I know Hotfoot?

Here's the thing, I know if I grabbed the Ring it wouldn't be very long before I went on a power trip and decided the world would be better off with one Frigidmagi in charge.

Well that's rather the point. It's supposed to be a self-analysis of your own weaknesses. Where are you vulnerable to corruption? What are your weak points that are easily exploited. Everyone likes to go on about how great they are, but let's be honest, nobody is perfect, and eventually everyone has a point where they would do evil in the name of good.

So what you're asking for is stuff like how I'd start down the dark path by smiting everyone who ever hurt me and turning my hometown into a smoking crater? Because, for instance, the thought of hunting down the guy who bullied me in first grade and getting him back in a suitably horrid fashion adjusted for age is very appealing.

Storytime update 8/31: Frigidmagi might be amused by this one.

Well yes. You have power, how would you use it? Would you start out using it for good, or for selfish desires?

If you are corrupted, how do you distinguish good things from selfish desires that you rationalize as good?

You don't usually start corrupted unless you're a bad person, you become corrupted as the power you have lets you do things you wouldn't normally do.

Since we are not now corrupted, we can more easily see where we would lose distinction of the line between good acts and good intentions.

I don't know. There are many things that I don't do because they are wrong, but I could easily see myself slipping into and rationalizing them if I didn't have a strong moral center to look to. Without a firm grip on what's right, I know for me it would be easy enough to slip into "small" things, and probably working up to murder and manipulation to make my way.
