Well, still two hours to go at my place, but it's already there for most of the world so good enough, I say.
Anyway, 200 years ago today a genuinely nice fellow named Charles Robert Darwin was born. He was a prolific writer and scientist, doing important studies on barnacles, earthworms, exotic botany (insectivorous plants and orchids), effects of domestication, and oh yeah, this little thing called "evolution." You might've heard about him and this theory of his.
If you ever get a chance, his complete works are online, and they're very readable.
Happy Darwin Day!

Happy Darwin Day everyone!
On this day, the man who would free Biology from the shackles of religious notions of creation and who's theory would upon revision unify not only the life sciences but the social sciences as well, was born. Evolution would come to answer questions not only centered around the origin of biological diversity, solve practical problems such as disease and food production, find applications in management of natural resources and the weaving together of the great tapestry of life... But would also help us answer the question of what it truly means to be human.
No man's contributions to not only knowledge, but human welfare have ever been so vast and all-encompassing.

For the Americans, and WV in particular... It's Abe Lincoln's Birthday.
Pity WV no longer gets a state holiday for it.

Pity Darwin was so wrong. Seriously.
Survival of the fittest?? What a crock. *
um i mean
i accept this gift in the spirit in which it was given
* To explain what I mean here, evolutionary theory, like every other scientific theory, changes over time as we understand the world better. It has of course been refined quite a bit since he first wrote about it.
btw I'd say the same thing about Newton. :P

Darwin is one of the two contenders, along with Einstein, for the award of having come up with the greatest single idea in all of human thought, an idea that, had it not been thought up, would have left the world living in darkness. Einstein's was the General Theory of Relativity. Darwin's was Natural Selection.
