#1 LibArc Chats - Take 2 (interactive)

Post by Dark Silver »

So yeah, I got bored tonight, and decided to give the chat thingie another go.

You may find the temporary Login page at: http://www.libriumarcana.com/chat/index.php

But I made some changes....

first off, I reset it up where you MUST create a username and password for this chat. Which means no more being able to impersonate someone. You must first click the register link on your first visit, then create your new username and what not, then click register button on the bottom.

Once this is done, you may now log in!

Yes, far more secure..

to help improve performance, I suggest finding a theme you like, and doing the following under options:

1) disable all sounds, even if it's just hitting "mute all" under the sounds tab. This helps performance.

2) Disable the background picture undr the Effects tab, this will assist in render time.

The chat is a bit slow, purposely, I had it put a delay of approx 5 seconds, so help with bandwidth consumption and CPU usage on the server.

Any problems or complaints, let me know.

And telling me "it's flash", or it's empty, will result in a derogitory title of "LUser". If it's empty, drag people there!

damn it...

Normally Charon...I would follow through with the threat.

But since your already Chaos' Cockpuppet.....I don't feel like promoting you.

For the users, here is a list of IRC like commands for the chat.
Chat Commands wrote: /away Sets user as away. Typing this command again sets user as "here". This action may also slow down the chat ping time for the "away" user, depending on the setting of msgRequestIntervalAway, which is set in

/inc/config.php

/here Sets user as here. This reverses the "away" and "busy" states.

/busy Sets user as busy. Typing this command again sets user as "here".

/back Shows the last entries of the room's chat, including any chat text that was present before arrival to the room.

/backtime Shows the last minutes of the room's chat, including any chat text that was present before arrival to the room.

/clear Clears the chat screen. This only affects your screen, not the screen of other users.

/me <action> Issues an IRC-like "action" to the chat. "/me" will be changed to your user name, and the text in <action> will appear as a system message. For example: "/me is thinking" would translate to "Joe is thinking".

/join <room> Switches the user to <room>. For example: "/join The Lounge"

/part Logout of the chat.

/quit Logout of the chat.

/logout Logout of the chat.

/version Shows which version of the chat you are using.

/invite <user> Invites "user" to the room that you are currently in.

/ignore <user> Ignores "user" until /unignore "user" is issued

/? Display a list of currently available IRC commands.

/helpall Display a list of all available IRC commands.

/whowas <user> This only works when FlashChat is used in a registered-users manner (not the "free for all" chat mode). Shows profile page for any registered user.

/whois <user> Same as /whowas, but the user must be logged in.

/motd Displays the message of the day, as defined in /appdata/motd.txt

/sos <message> Alerts moderator in the current room of your message. Message text is optional. Message behaves like an /alert

/names Shows a list of all user names in all public rooms.

/showignores Shows who you are ignoring, and who is ignoring you.
I'm working on integrating the chat better with the website, maybe as just a popup you can reach from the main page links....

More as I figure things out.

Due to my general awesomeness, I have put a link on the mainsite for the chat, which opens into a 800x600 popup. You may log into the chats from the popup, and it will not take up a full window on you ever again!

Unless..your resolution is smaller than 800x600.....

Also, make sure LibriumArcana is set to be allowed popups, otherwise the new popup link won't work.....

Fire Fox users may do this by going through the following:
Tools>Options>Content>Add Allowed Sites (for popups)> www.libriumarcana.com

Just had tomake Dartzap do it..

but anyway so there is no fish emote....you can just do /me and write the emote yourself!

I'll figure out how to script in commands later...

Shouldn't a Cancel button like I don't know cancel actions? (IOW black text on black backround again).
There was sound despite the mute all button being checked, there was a background picture despite the button not being checked, and checking/unchecking the button didn't do zilch (unless the blue swirly thing is not the background picture).

Detective...something is wrong on your end...

and you could always...you know..change your font color.

I suggest trying to change out the theme to something else.

May as well give me your Browser info and what version of the Flash Plugin you have, so that we can try to find out what is going on your end.

What's going on is that thanks to my mouse having PMS I accidentally set the chat to display black text on black background. Other that my gripe about 'Cancel' being supposed to undo stuff like that (the doing of which in the first place is absolutely my fault) I'm not complaining. The problem is I can no longer see the controls needed to fix the situation what with most of everything being black text on black background.

mmmm....

I could delete your username and you could try to remake it.

That should erase the previous settings, thus allow you to redo it.

Just go ahead and remake your name now, and see if that works

I can say that it's decidedly less hard on CPU useage.

Decidedly less being apparently a factor of 2 or so, now it meanders between 1 and 55 or so percent. Still much better than the last one.
From what I can tell the chat keeps continually polling LA, is it supposed to do that?
What I'm reasonably certain it is NOT supposed to do is reset the text colour every time I log on. Especially as it keeps resetting to something I never chose in the first place.
It's fixed easily enough but I suspect it shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

Yes, it is. Polling is one of the limitations of browser things (though, it can be circumvented, it is not common and requires server side changes).

I just thought I'd point it out. If that is as it should be, groovy.
And it seems I was a bit premature about the CPU useage. We're back up to 85 percent again (and yes I've disabled sounds and the background picture).

I like it alot. The computers at work can handle it well and it is the only instant chat that I can use. All other forms have been blocked, and this is a wecome reprive.

Ace..it's been through on this.....

AIM doesn't let us do what I want on it, and I'm not wasting the immense amount of server resources to set up a IRC server for here. This is less intensive on the CPU, consumes jack shit in system resources, and the only problem seems one or two people have abnormal CPU usage due to the flash interface.

I'll tell you right now, the chat isn't a mandatory thing, I'm not forcing any of you to use it, but It is a option if you want to communicate with people, or just talk with them and they don't happen to have AIM.

This is all inclusive, it doesn't force anyone to download anything extra, it's hosted and controlled entirely onsite.

So if your only going to bitch about it, give me a concrete, good solid reason it's a bad idea to use THIS peice of software till such time as I get a better alternative?

The abnormal constant CPU usage some people experience with it is a mystery. I know Flash is sometimes CPU usage, but that's normally when alot of stuff is being rendered though the system. This is almost literally just text streaming, with emoticons being handled by the software client loaded in the window. Now unless it's still doing the sounds when it's mute, (you may want to try unchecking the boxes under sounds gentlemen who are having the problem), then I don't see any reason it should be happening.

Now....anyone ELSE having a legitimate complaint (and yes Detective, i'm trying to find out why you and White Haven are having the CPU usage problems), please express them here.

Rukia leaves the moment I join, Dark Silver leaves the moment I post and actually bans me, virtually nobody logs on despite the chat being quite active when it was implemented, White Haven logs out the moment he sees I'm on the chat... I get the feeling I'm not wanted there.
On a more serious note, the resource useage problems seem to be under control. I don't know howe much of that is the upgrade and how much the fact that I went with your advice and unchecked all the sound event boxes after noticing that this stupid thing would AUDIBLY play sounds despite the 'mute all' box being checked.
