#1 WTF is roaming?

Post by Something Awesome »

So, I finally got a non-pay-as-you-go phone, since I barely get service in college with it, so now I'm wondering about all the little lame things I didn't have to bother with before.

Most importantly, what is roaming? I'm with Cingular now, and their FAQ just says it's a call made outside of your "home service area," but what the hell is that? How far does this area extend? Am I going to be charged roaming charges for talking at college, since I set it up at home? Or do they mean "home service area" as in all the orange-y spots on the coverage map they have, which is pretty much most of the US?

See, this is why jargon is bad when discussing things with non-experts.

the Orangy spots is home coverage area, or any area Cingular services.

Roaming occurs when you are talking outside the normal Cingular Coverage Area, when they have to by the airwaves from whoever own that tower.

your Cingular phone should tell you when your in a roaming area, so you can avoid talking on it at random.
