Apparently we lost the past six days worth of posts sometime overnight....

I've no idea how it happened, I'll be talking with Adam when he wakes up, and see if we can recover the lost posts somehow.

We'll keep you informed as things become known.

Nothing was lost, there are actually two copies of the board on different servers, and something got mixed up. I am posting from the college now, at home, I access the up to date board.

Now that I have a handle on what is going on, I should be able to command both boards from home and set things back to normal.

Why the multiple servers configuration? Is it a Disaster Recovery Plan of some sort? How do you synch the data between the servers?

When can we expect an update on the restoration situation?

Basically what happened is ADM, our host, preformed a server migration. Hence the two servers, hence the two sets of posts...

Yeah, this is the real board now.

Really annoying, but apparently, I was fighting something I shouldn't have been fighting. I'm moving the new data from the other board over now.

Major blog changes migrated, working on threads and posts now. It might look really weird for a bit as I do this.

Posts and threads: I have all the data up on my screen right now (800 lines, after automatic filtering. Apparently, lots of things on the board change in just a week...), but I don't have an elegant way of integrating it back here.

Whenever you post, the post is given an ID. Both boards started off the same, but then we posted differently on them, so some IDs that were right on the other board are taken on this one. Ditto for threads.

I am trying to think up a way to automatically correct for this, but so far, I have nothing. It looks like I might only have two options:

1) Put up the database on my server and let you all cut and paste your own posts from there to here

or 2) Go through all 800 lines of changes and correct it all by hand. Of course, this will take a damn long time, and is likely going to contain many errors before it is all done. My eyes are glazing over as it is.

But tonight, I think I am going to go to sleep, since it is way past my bedtime, and I am feeling kinda sick. I'll look back at it in the morning and hopefully, when rested, I will see some trick that I am not seeing right now to automate it all, but I am not optimistic. Plan 1 will probably be what I end up going with, but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Cutting and pasting is the simplest solution.

Needs coordination, I guess. For example, last week Stofsk made a thread, then Batman post a reply, followed by frigidmagi. So the sequence will be Stofsk - Batman - frigidmagi.

Now, if they are going to manually rebuild the thread on the correct database, they should arrange in such way that Stofsk posts first, followed by Batman, and then finally frigid --to make the thread exactly looks like that of the previous database.

Now that's only three people. How about thread containing 37 posts or so, posted by various members?

 This is also out of question, unless you're an obsessive-compulsive person.

How about user ID? And forum ID? Are they consistent accross the two databases?

the two databases are carbon copies up to January 31 2007. After that, there is a 5 day gap, where the database for this board had no activity, while the other one had all our activity.

yesterday is the pooch screw, with any new threads and posts added to this board, now share ID's with totally different threads over in the other database....

Well, I'd just say let it happen how it happens. We can all just post it when we get around to it.

Yes, they are, but the problem is post id and thread id are both primary keys. Duplicates are out of the question, and they are references in other tables as foreign keys. Maintaining the integreity of the database while putting it all in is the hard part.

But I'll see about setting up the copy so we can start cut and pasting sometime today.
