#1 So about these stars...

There are a lot of them, and they are getting a little distracting. Is there any way of changing the setting on them so there's only one per, say, year or so? I do like having stars (and miss them on SDN) but they're getting a bit unwieldy right now.

One per 6 months or so might be a good idea (yea, I'm not willing to give up too many just yet
).
Some boards have a system where you have them in several colors, for instance one color for three months and the other for longer periods of time, say, a year. I don't know whether we could do something like that (so as there would be at most one line for instance).

I'll see what can be done to correct this issue. Yeah, getting multiple rows of stars is a big excessive...

Figured out the issue, it will require some minor modification of some of the DB files, so it'll take a bit for me to go through everything and do the proper updates. It's now on the list of shit to do for the site, which, as DS points out, grows by leaps and bounds and never gets touched, so breath holding is not advised at this point. Unless you want to of course, but that's your preferance.

A colored rank system sounds awesome to me. And we never got around to other stuff because of the mass debate it started if you recall? Stars really does seem like the best option.

What massive debate was this? I barely ever noticed the stars.

There was a bit of a row over what to change them to, it was all really freaking silly. The stars could go with another update to shrink the numbers.

I've had a real job for a few months now (two jobs, if you count the babysitting), which is eating hoards of time. When I do have time free, I have a non-work todo list which is absurd.
Anyway, changed them to actual year stars instead of the 90 days they were (wow, I should have paid attention to this a long time ago!). So that should handle it for a while.
edit: this code really isn't complex. I could probably put in some color stuff without much hassle.......

Hmmm, it is now 1 gold star for every year, and a silver star for each 6 months after that. That means you get a star pretty quickly and can show off lots of them, but the numbers are much better.
The silver star looks like crap because I suck; if you guys want to change the pictures, right click, save as, edit and email your changes to me (
destructionator@gmail.com - be sure to stick libarc in the subject line) or post them in this thread.
edit: Just chatted with DS and decided to make it 6 months instead of 3 for the silver.

I take it by silver stars you mean the grey ones (I'm on subSilver).
And frankly I don't see what the big deal is. My star count is out of whack with my original join date ALREADY and I couldn't possibly care less about that or losing the stars for good over at SDN.
The stars only tell how long you've hung around. They don't say beans about wether or not you actually did something worthwhile in or with that time.

Says a guy mentioning a postcount landmark in his sig.... (I seriously proposed removing the postcount display from the forum a long while ago, since it doesn't tell if your posts were any good and might encourage spamming to pad the count. It was shot down though, since I wasn't able to support the premise.)
Ad hominums aside, they are just for fun. It is a nice thing to decorate the forum, not something to judge someone by.
Now, what we REALLY need are nice shiny senator bars!

There's no U in ad hominem and at least I managed to snag a postcount landmark that despite this being a forum lousy with sci-fi nerds
nobody else thought of.
