1775: United States Marine Corps founded.
1865: Major Henry Wirz, warden of the Confederate POW camp at Andersonville, is hanged for maltreatment of the prisoners, becoming the only soldier of the American Civil War executed for war crimes.
1871: Henry Morton Stanley finds Dr. David Livingstone in Africa, famously greeting him with the words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
1919: First national convention of the American Legion is held.
1928: Hirohito crowned the 124th Emperor of Japan.
1951: Direct dial coast-to-coast telephone service begins in the United States.
1970: For the first time in five years, an entire week ends with no American servicemen killed in action in Vietnam.
1984: Rogue 9 comes kicking and screaming into the world. This earth-shattering event marks the beginning of the end for TIE pilots the galaxy over.
1989: The Communist government of Bulgaria falls, another component in the end of the Cold War.
2007: King Juan Carlos of Spain publicly asks President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela why he doesn't just shut up.
