#1 What is the worst TOS episode?

Post by Destructionator XV »

In my opnion, "The Alternative Factor" has got to be the worst TOS episodes. The constant camera tilt annoys me to no end, the bizarre colouring in some of the shots makes it almost unwatchable.

Then the plot, whatever there was of one, didn't get my attention at all, though that might have been a side affect of the bad camera affecting ym perception of the episode.

What do you think is the Worst Star Trek TOS episode, ever?

I actually don't mind the Alternative Factor. Yes it was weird, but not so weird that I couldn't enjoy it.

There were a few stinkers in the third season.

The last episode... the one where the insane female scientist stole his body.

Turnabout Intruder.

And yeah, that was bad too. I m\would probably be willing to say about 1/3 of TOS is great, 1/3 is decent, and 1/3 is simply bad. That was certainly amonst the worst.

That's being ungenerous. Though TOS had its bad episodes, I wouldn't say they accounted for a full third of the series.

Even TOS at it's worst didn't approach the levels of bad TNG+ approached, simply because that while TOS occasionally stunk, they never lost that sense of fun. TNG et al lacked that sense of fun and there was always that omnipresent atmosphere of seriousness. Yeah, like I can really take Spider Barclay seriously, or Salamander Sex as a likely result of achieving Warp 10...

Or it would be if they had gone with Harlan Ellison's original script. But Gene Roddenberry decided to rewrite it, in effect butchering it.

If you think the aired episode was good, the unaired unfilmed script is great. You have to stomach a fairly long and justified rant by Harlan in the introduction, though of course you can skip that (and he tells you to do just that, several times - he's desperately interested in letting the words speak for themselves).

Actually...Spock's Brain was one episode I really frigging hated...

I liked City on the Edge of Forever, but once you read the original script, there's so much wasted potential....

Which is something I've never had the chance to do.

I'll have to me-2 Spock's Brain, followed by the space hippie one, but I kinda feel a special mention also needs to go to By Any Other Name, not because of it being "bad" (acting was good, etc), but I personally found it tasteless.

By Any Other Name is one of my favourite episodes, simply because the tone and feel of the episode changes midway through. The evil aliens take over the ship, and things seem dire; then they latch onto this utterly ridiculous idea of fighting back, by subjecting the aliens (who are masquerading as humans in human style bodies) to human impulses, feelings and emotions, and vices like stimulant abuse and alcoholism - all of which is absurd if it wasn't for the comedic result.

Randomly pick a third season episode, and odds are you've hit a stinker.

I forget the nam. it had the crew crash on a planet with giant primitives who would attack them. it was very boring.

tey crashed on the planet with a shuttle. They used the energy from their phasers to charge it up and go into orbit to get the enterprises attention.

The name of the episode is The Galileo Seven. It's suppose to showcase Spock.

I didn' tlike it as a kid still don't. I like spock, but the episode. not really. I belive it had to do with the lame aliens.
