Back to the Movie!!

One thing that bugged me: Where they were outside in Vaccuum, the only protection StarLord had on was that helmet. No gloves, nothing around his neck, and just a normal set of clothing. Gamora, when her ship exploded, had her inhancements, but as Rocket said they'd not last long. So, how did StarLord survive hard-vac with just that helmet?!

How long were they in vacuum? You can survive a couple of minutes in the void without any protective equipment, add in a helmet to keep the respiratory system pressurized and one should be able to survive for a while.

Maybe because just this once, movie makers remembered that people don't spontaneously explode just because they're in a vacuum?

If I remember correctly, it has to do with space not leeching away heat from the body as rapidly as one would think. You don't instantly freeze to death or explode. You'd loose consciousness due to lack of oxygen and your bodily fluids would start to boil. Your soft tissues would start to expand from the boiling process. But you could survive a minute or so in vacuum before death. Of course you probably don't want to test these theories as I'm sure it is probably more painful than it sounds.

The kicker with vacuum isn't that it kills you instantly, but you're unconscious within 15 seconds so there's usually fuck all you can do to save yourself. A guy survived 30 seconds of accidental vacuum exposure with no injury at all.

Yeah, and without particular discomfort either. He remembered the saliva boiling away in his mouth from the pressure loss, then bam! Out like a light.

Yeah, I thought the vaccuum sequence was actually one of the more realistic ones I've seen. Maybe not the aftermath, but the frost on the skin and the burst blood vessels in the eyes and the person not literally exploding the instant he was out of pressure all made sense.

Thanks for clearing that up, guys. I wasn't sure it was plausible, as I knew the blood boiled and vaccuum sucked the air out.
The ice crystals forming on their bodies was a nice visual for how slowly vaccuum was killing them.

One thing I must praise is how Vin Diesel got so much information and emotion across with three little words. Rocket may have been the only one to understand him, but I could get the gist from context clues and facial expression. Did anyone else find it that easy?

Actually your blood doesn't boil (your body keeps it under pressure) but some of your exposed blood vessels burst. Also exhale before/as you hit vacuum. Trying to keep air in your lungs under vacuum is a good way to fuck them up.

Apparently he through himself into the role, to the point of insisting to know the actual meaning of each line and then adjusting his delivery based on what he was supposed to be trying to convey. It worked.

Pretty good. I thought the opening was a little too fast-paced which is my usual problem with modern movies (DIVE INTO THE ACTION with hasty development enroute), but from the prison scene onward it really just kept getting better and better. They did a good job with having an actual middle section (another common flaw in modern movies) and the ending was suitably epic.

It's up there with Iron Man and Avengers as Marvel movies I really groove on.

Pelvic magic, heh.

One thought that did come to me this morning, though: Thanos comes out of this movie kind of looking like a total bitch. Every single agent he had fucked him over- his 'daughters' turn on him, Ronan spits in his face once he gets the gem. Probably would've done better to add some kind of 'just as planned' twist at the end, even if it didn't involve getting the gem.

I don't know, I kind of like the idea. Remember, Thanos is a dude trying to destroy the universe in a vain effort to impress his would-be girlfriend.

He's also...kinda a dick. While he has the power to compel obedience by any of a number of methods (not least of which being 'or else'), he's never been one to form a coalition, to have a group of like-minded individuals, so on and so forth. Temporary alliances at best, and alliances in which by and large each side is ready to backstab the other at the earliest opportunity. And why not: Thanos's general objective is 'kill everyone, ever;' that's not a game-plan that lends itself well to long-term partnerships.

Still, he totally gets punked, and for a boss villain (perhaps the boss villain of the entire Marvel movie arc, who knows?) it's not good development. It's a minor quibble for me and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie, though.

I agree that there should have been a "Just As Planned". Thanos plays a very long game, and he is not playing chess, it's GO in 4 dimensions.

However, think of what Thanos knows now -- A group of Terrans/Earthers defeated his pawn's attack on their planet. Now, ONE (1) Single Terran beat his favorite daughter, and then became the linchpin of a coalition that took out his new Pawn.

At the very least Thanos needs a thorough HR review of the hiring policies. Perhaps torturing orphans after killing their parents was not as good a teambuilding method as one would think.

Note to self, Havoc is not allowed to work in recruitment.

Interestingly, the biggest bans we have are in the department of PR. Lys, Comrade Tortoise and more have all been banned from working there.
