The Taloran Imperial Starfleet. One of a series of articles on the ships of the Taloran Star Empire, this document has particularly good information due to the lack of information control in the Empire. However, it should be noted that ship numerical figures are production lists unless otherwise noted, and do not represent any sort of knowledge of losses in action, or decommission due to mechanical problems or age.

Large Taloran ships universally resemble old oceanic vessels in overall form and imagery, but the major difference is the inverted double-hull style, as though two identical ship hulls were taken, one flipped over, and attached to the top of the other. The superstructure is then placed on the dorsal surface, what would be the bottom of the upper and inverted "hull". The ventral surface repeats this, though usually with a far more modest superstructure, giving the ship a distinct dorsal and ventral appearance, rather than a mirrored one, but not by much. Sharp underhang characterizes the sterns of the ships, where the hull plunges down from the considerable heights of the main deck down to a much shorter fantail area, sort of like a double-cruiser or yacht stern in style. A bent X- shape of extremely heavy gravito-magnetic vanes is usually mounted here, not protruding above the top and bottom of the main hull surface to avoid masking the guns.

The bows of the ships are usually extremely sharp, and in the schooner style, in some cases with ceremonial rams/bowsprits added forward at the centreline of the "double hull" form. Amidships along the centreline it is normal for there to be two more larger and extremely thick gravito-magnetic fins; these also serve as the attaching points for multirole cigar-shaped mission specific pods, the largest of which for the newest dreadnoughts can mass three million tonnes and reach almost a thousand meters in length; only the leading and trailing edges of the stub-wings, which are called sponsons in Taloran starfleet terminology, have gravito-magnetic impellers installed in them. This frees up the centre of the often extremely thick and broad sponsons on the largest of dreadnoughts for the mounting of additional turrets. As these are frequently masked by the multirole pods, these are almost exclusively used as missile-pods on these ships, which are then dropped after firing their initial attack salvoes to unmask the wing turrets.

All ship classes larger than Destroyer Leaders, with two exceptions, follow this basic hull pattern. Destroyer Leaders, destroyers, and destroyer escorts have a double-ended, sheer-sided style to their design, with flat bows, which creates a very different look. Frigates, Corvettes, and light pickets tend to have cigar-shaped hulls with casemated guns and semi-retractable conning towers, seeming like nothing other than Jules Verne's original depiction of the Nautilus, with gravito-magnetic impellers in the form of circular hoods mounted well aft. Ships based off of merchant designs tender to resemble more modern submarine designs of the conventional type.

In all cases, the result is that the ships are much longer than they are wide. No Taloran combatant or even semi-combatant exceeds a length to beam ratio of 8.5:1; the typical is 10:1 or 10.5:1, and ships of 11.5:1 have been built. This means that the largest Taloran ships are in all cases extremely long for their mass, and incredibly thin and spindly. One aspect of the double-hull style to the design is that the ships are universally either as high as they are wide, or more frequently, noticeably higher than they are wide, even before the superstructure is added, giving them a tall and looming presence when viewed end-on. The design and the placement of the gravito-magnetic impellers tends to result in ships capable of extremely great acceleration for their class size, making Taloran ships, particularly their heavy ships, the fastest in the multiverse. However, it also makes them extremely difficult to manoeuvre, preventing delicate and intricate fleet manoeuvres that other powers' ships are capable of, and tending to reflect the Taloran preference for quick and devastating initial strikes followed by using their superiour acceleration to keep the enemy in range while they are systematically pounded from a distance, without any close range manoeuvre being required or sought. When close ranges are sought in Taloran ships it is almost exclusively for slashing attacks with short-range torpedoes at high velocity rather than a sustained engagement.

Talorans use primarily particle cannon for their larger weapons, and powerguns, using energetic matter as sort of a combination between a particle and plasma weapon, for small guns. Generally speaking all Taloran weapons are focused toward very high power single shots but have very slow recharge times, so that devastating but infrequent broadsides are given compared to the continuous fire favoured by most other powers. Flak accelerators and short-range RAMs (16 cell + automatic reloading system for another 16 missiles at a time. This is reloaded via internal tubes in turn, and there are about 512 reload RAMs for each launcher + 1 missile in the reload tubes, one in the RAM launcher itself, and 1 in the transfer tube at any one time, or a total of 560 countermissiles per each RAM launcher) are used for point-defence. A smaller version carries only 64 reload missiles + 48 = 112 and is used on some large frigates; beyond this, the RAM missiles can also be fitted in bolt-on, non-reloadable (except when docked to a tender or in the yard) packs of 24 missiles on very small ships. These packs can also be fitted on bombers, interceptors and gunboats instead of torpedoes (4, 1, and 2 respectively), allowing them to be used as missile-defence craft in extremely missile heavy environments in which a torpedo strike is inadvisable, to provide dual-use for those heavy fighters. Also used are tractor beams (two are mounted on any ship, but of varying power based on that ship's reactor size), which are projected over broad areas with their power set on reverse to shove, break, and damage incoming missiles or projectiles when possible, as sort of a defensive graser. Extremely long range missiles with small warheads but very extensive penaids and their own integral defences are the main missile armament against enemy ships, with the magazines and launchers shared in a dual-purpose tasking with long-range antifighter missiles. The 21cm powergun, firing 256kT shots up to 4 times a second, is used both in an anti-missile and anti-fighter role, and occupies a role not dissimilar to the 40mm Bofors in WW2.

Very Long Range anti-ship missiles have 256 MT warheads, acceleration of 9,000g's sustained over ranges in the tens of light-minutes (the missiles have an operational range of thirty-five light minutes), are 28 meters long and a continuous 1.5 meters in diameter over their entire length except a short tapered nosecone and have ion-fusion drives initiated by small anti-matter charges; long-range anti-fighter missiles have 32 MT warheads, acceleration of 18,000g's over an effective range of 4 light-minutes against fighters and .5 - 1 light minute against missiles, have a maximum diameter of 1.5 meters with three stages of pure anti-matter rockets and a length of 25 meters and are intercompatible between launchers. The launchers for these missiles consist of the Mk.30, a quadruple-arm launcher with a variable magazine size, the Mk.25, a twin-arm launcher with a fixed magazine size of 48 missiles per rail for use in light cruisers and destroyers, and the Mk.34, a tiny, lightweight launcher with a single-arm that has a fixed 16-round magazine capacity for use on frigates and missile boats.

For close range, multi-stage torpedoes are used to attack the enemy. These normally have a "zero" stage and eight to twelve strap-on chemical boosters which operate at 950g's for 2 seconds to clear the ship; Metallic-hydrogen/anti-matter based progressively exploding rocket stages are used next, the first burning for a second, the last for four seconds, four in all, with accelerations of 91,000g's. The warhead is a 25 tonne device containing a terminal manoeuvring stage of 91,000g's acceleration which can last for four seconds. These incredible weapons mount a 10 gigatonne anti-matter warhead, and the total weight of the missile is 150 metric tonnes. They are used for extremely-short range attacks where their lack of penaids, general lack of range due to short engine life (the stages are literally ejected just before they blow themselves up) and extreme vulnerability to destruction are made up for by their incredible velocity. Cumbersome and fickle devices, however, their loading and firing are subject to many advanced calculations to improve their chances and to maintain the safety of the ship. The 25-tonne terminal attack section is used as the Starfighter torpedo fitted to the Taloran Starfighter Corps' Jump Bombers and Gunboats at even more daringly close ranges. The missiles are not aerodynamic and versions of the warhead with a stealthed casing for slow reentry-deployment as gravity bombs are used for planetary assault instead. A similar warhead is fitted to the immense, 3,500-metric tonne assault missiles which are being phased out on ships other than heavy cruisers in the main Imperal Starfleet in favour of starfighters. These missiles, with their own impellers and shields, were intended to deliver a 10 gigatonne warhead to an enemy ship across the solar system at incredible accelerations and being extremely difficult to intercept; the immense cost of the missile, more than a fully operational gunboat, however, made it exceptionally prohibitive for the Imperial Starfleet. The smaller navies of the Empire still use them because the manning, training, and maintenance costs of starfighter carriers are greater than simply putting a missile in a tube, and short of a major war where cost is not an option, the missiles would not need to be used, unlike with the Imperial Starfleet's constant skirmishing on the borders.

The Taloran Starfleet's designations for these ships come out only as approximation. One thing to remember is that the main large cruiser element in the fleet, with some thousand in service, are Battlecruisers. Heavy cruisers have an energy armament identical to light cruisers; they are simply faster, armed with missiles, and have the internal space for long deployments and numerous fighters for scouting, whereas light cruisers are close fleet support elements with all-energy batteries. Other than the Dreadnoughts, Taloran ships tend to be considerably smaller in tonnage than their Habsburg counterparts, though comparable to the newest of Alliance designs. Taloran ships throughout have extremely large crews; the largest dreadnoughts boast compliments of up to 55,000 personnel.

Taloran Dreadnoughts:

The mainstays of the fleet, 560 Dreadnoughts are in commission in the Taloran Starfleet, which makes no distinction between Superdreadnoughts and Dreadnoughts unlike most powers; therefore these ships are comparable in their whole range from the Empress Saverana II class, which with the mass of its multirole pods added is the largest true warship (rather than mobile battle platform) in the multiverse, to the Queen Drimarka class, elderly vessels retained in service due to the threat multiplication of multiversal contact which are only 2.5 megatonnes larger than a Habsburg Siegreich-class Battleship, and probably compare to said class at the best due to their age.

Dreadnought mission-specific pods range from 1.5 megatonnes to 3 megatonnes for the largest on the largest ships. The standard compliment of gunboats and starfighters is 16 gunboats, 16 torpedo bombers, 16 interceptors, and 16 light space superiourity fighters, along with 32 assault landers for their brigade-scale Marine landing forces. Smaller and older classes, however, have only 8 gunboats, 8 - 16 assault landers, and 8 space superiourity fighters. In both cases, however, an additional 8 interceptors are provided to service the four ready catapults with craft on continuous watch for rapid launch for scouting purposes.

This elderly class is both the last dreadnoughts with assault missiles and is maintained in service primarily due to the CON-5 contacts of the Taloran Star Empire as a stopgap measure. All other ships are serving in the secondary reserve fleets (the fleets of the Imperial Demesne) or have been decommissioned and reduced to secondary roles.

Battleships of the Imperial Starfleet:

These vessels are very short-ranged and slow craft designed to support fixed system defences. They have little in the way of onboard stores and fuel and are exceptionally heavily armoured and power-packed for their size, but of very limited cruising and combat endurance and lacking in fleet speed accelerations. Production has slowed as the Dreadnought fleet and more forward-operational doctrines have taken prominence, and, for the Imperial Starfleet, has ceased almost entirely with the new focus post-contact with the ADN on quickly building up a large carrier fleet.

Queen Ilahmsi III-class battleship: (2,600 x 260 x 275 meters, b.c. .56; 107 million m^3 hull volume; 31.5 megatonnes empty mass.) number in commission: 8. Number under construction: 8. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 950g's. Notes: This class is in slow serial production to keep battleship building lines open as the vast majority of slips of that size have been shifted to the construction of fleet carriers.

Fleet Carriers of the Imperial Starfleet:

Most of these craft are smaller support vessels designed with only limited fighter capacity and a heavy offensive battery which is uncommon for a carrier. They are lightly armoured like battlecruisers and as fast as they are. Originally designed for fleet support, strike concept testing is under review.

The general shape of the carriers is the same as other Taloran ships: A long ship-shaped hull with two detachable multirole combat pods, one on each of the extended centreline, broadly midships wings, which also contain gravitic drive elements and sometimes gun turrets. In the case of the carriers the multirole pods are always used to contain part of the wing and so their storage statistics are included here, though their mass is not.

Imperial Taloran Starfleet Battlecruisers:

Battlecruisers are the main-line ships of the Starfleet intended to engage and destroy enemy cruisers systematically. Because of this they have immense, battleship-scale main batteries and the fastest speed of any large ships in the fleet at the expense of almost any armour at all save for ERA around the outer hull and internal subdivision. Their shield banks are prodiguous, however, and can be briefly charged to dreadnought scale with the immense energies diverted from their massive impeller banks. Battlecruisers of the newest type carry 16 gunboats, 24 interceptors, 16 torpedo bombers, 16 space superiourity fighters, and 32 assault landers. Of the older type, 8 gunboats, 16 interceptors, 8 torpedo bombers, 16 space superiourity fighters, and 16 assault landers. In all case four ready-catapults are fitted.

Heavy Cruising Ships:

Command Cruisers: As a new development, the Ralsa-class Command Cruisers have been deployed for large-scale fleet command away from the centre of battle. They are unpopular with Admirals, however, who say they are not sufficiently protected despite being immensely armoured, and do not provide direct observation in real-time of the most crucial parts of a heavy fleet engagement. Because of this, production has been scaled back so that the vessels will serve as area headquarters craft only and therefore are only needed in limited numbers. However, it has recently been proposed that they would also be effective as carrier flagships, which has seen a revival of interest in the design and additional orders. Command cruisers have an onboard craft compliment of 8 gunboats, 8 torpedo bombers, 16 interceptors, 16 space superiourity fighters, and 16 assault landers. Four of the interceptors are mounted on external, trainable catapults for quick-launch with crews always aboard during condition two or higher for advanced scouting purposes.

Ralsa (Capital of the Great Kingdom of Rasilan) class Command Cruisers (2,036 x 204 x 223 meters; .5 b.c., 46.4 million m^3 hull volume; 14.5 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission: 48; number under construction: 24; number planned: 8. Energy Armament: 32 x 50 MT p.c. in sixteen twin turrets. Missile Armament: 56 x Mk.30 very-long-range quadruple-rail accelerative missile launchers per broadside, 112 in all, 80 missiles per rail (variable mix of anti-fighter/anti-ship rounds). Point-Defence Armament: 64 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 208 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 208 x flak projectors. Weapons busbar capacity: 900 MT/S. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 96 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 2,350g's.

Scout Cruisers: Proposed budget alternative to Battlecruisers, they were initially highly successful--until foreign powers started fielding their own battlecruisers, at which point they were worthless in their intended role. The surviving ships are quite old and are now integrated into the fleet carrier squadrons to be used against attacking light craft with their numerous small and rapid-firing particle cannon as escorts for the carriers, which mount no such cannon. A replacement class of "large light cruisers" has been proposed as fast escorts for the carriers meant to engage other light cruisers. Scout cruisers have an onboard craft compliment of 8 gunboats, 8 torpedo bombers, 16 interceptors, 16 space superiourity fighters, and 16 assault landers. Four of the interceptors are mounted on external, trainable catapults for quick-launch with crews always aboard during condition two or higher for advanced scouting purposes.

Point-Defence Armament: 32 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 52 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 64 x flak projectors. Weapons busbar capacity: 850 MT/S. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 40 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 2,435g's.

Expeditionary Cruisers: These vessels are the "explorers" of the Taloran Starfleet, ships which operate in an analogous role to the UFP's explorers. Expeditionary Cruisers maintain a regiment of onboard Marines, extensive starfighters and landing craft/gunboats, and a respectable armament. Two classes are in commission. The older Krinasha class has a traditional hullform, whereas the Kavarae's Ring class uses an experimental hullform of a flattened cylinder similar to the hull of a wet-navy Typhoon class SSBN of the Earth USSR that was not repeated in any other designs but proved servicable enough for the KRs. These are the largest ships to mount trainable torpedo tubes.

Kavarae's Ring class Expeditionary Cruisers (1,625 x 155 x 147 meters; .65 b.c., 24 million m^3 hull volume; 7.5 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission: 384. Energy Armament: 12 x 100 MT p.c. in six twin turrets. Missile Armament: 2 x twin trainable 10 GT short-range torpedo tubes, and two fixed fore and aft for eight altogether. There are eight reloads per tube. 32 x Mk.30 very-long-range quadruple-rail accelerative missile launchers per broadside, 64 in all, 128 missiles per rail (variable mix of anti-fighter/anti-ship rounds). There are five reloads per tube. 32 x Mk.30 very-long-range quadruple-rail accelerative missile launchers per broadside, 64 in all, 128 missiles per rail (variable mix of anti-fighter/anti-ship rounds). Point-Defence Armament: 24 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 48 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 52 x flak projectors. Weapons busbar capacity: 545 MT/S. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 32 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 1,950g's.

Heavy Cruisers: Basically faster, better defended versions of light cruisers designed for extended cruising and independent operations and fitted with a large missile armament, Heavy Cruisers reprise the role of old sailing frigates in being lone-wolf patrol and attack ships capable of operating away from their bases for months at a time. Modern heavy cruisers have an onboard craft compliment of 8 torpedo bombers, 12 interceptors, 16 space superiourity fighters, and 8 assault landers. Four of the interceptors are mounted on external, trainable catapults for quick-launch with crews always aboard during condition two or higher for advanced scouting purposes. Older, smaller heavy cruisers only carry 4 space superiourity fighters for close escort of a single VIP shuttle. In both cases however four catapults are provided.

Light Cruising Ships and Destroyer Leaders of the Imperial Taloran Starfleet:

Training/Escort Cruisers: These designs are built to be used as training ships in peacetime for officers and crewers and therefore contain a large variety of different kinds of weapons. In wartime, however, they serve a secondary role as escort ships, of which some of them, built to the same design, are used continuously in that role. In this way they are somewhat analogous to Alliance escort cruisers, and are generally slow but heavily armed (if inprecisely so because of the varying armaments) cruisers of the same broad armament of most of the Taloran fleet. The specified carried craft compliment for Training Cruisers is four interceptors, four torpedo bombers, four space superiourity fighters, and eight assault landers.

Grenya Colenta class Training Cruisers (1,190 x 135 x 140 meters; .6 b.c., 12 million m^3 hull volume; 3.75 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission: 432. Energy Armament: 4 x 100 MT p.c. in four turrets. 4 x 50 MT p.c. in four turrets, 2 x 25 MT in port and starboard sponsons. There are five reloads per tube. 8 x Mk.30 very-long-range quadruple-rail accelerative missile launchers per broadside, 16 in all, 48 missiles per rail (variable mix of anti-fighter/anti-ship rounds), + 4 x Mk.34 single-arm launchers. Eight assault missile tubes, no reloads. Point-Defence Armament: 20 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 32 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 32 x flak projectors. Weapons busbar capacity: 340 MT/S. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 16 GTs. Torpedo Cruisers:

Fast and brilliant, these large ships are built with enormous torpedo batteries and designed, plunging in against the enemy, to deliver killing blows against much larger ships. They are not very well protected or armed, but they are extremely fast. Torpedo Cruisers do not have armed craft aboard and operate just shuttles.

(note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 2,400g's.

Light Cruisers:

These vessels are almost exclusively designed as fleet screening elements. They are very slow cruisers, but highly manoeuvrable, and intended for direct support of battle squadrons in an anti-destroyer role and in fending off cruiser attacks. They have little missile armament but a very heavy gun armament and plenty of point defence and are reasonably well protected. It is also important, and interesting, to note that Taloran ships from light cruisers and below may be arranged in groups, that is, ships built by a particular shipbuilder. For vessels of this size, the plans are not drawn up directly by the Starfleet General Board, but rather a set of specifications are issued and the ships are built by different yards to their own designs to meet the specifications. This means that the figures provided here are averages and not absolutes as to the performance and dimensions of the classes listed, as the output of the shipyards can vary in terms of quality, and there are numerous visible design differences which might to the untrained eye lead someone to conclude these ships are from different classes when they are not. The same is true of the two newest heavy cruiser designs as well. Another point is that the guns on these vessels are generally packed into a smaller number of turrets to save space and mass to allow the maximal energy armament possible. Light cruisers do not have armed craft aboard and operate just unarmed shuttles.

Destroyer Leaders:

These vessels are not built in normal squadron format--i.e., designed for operational groups of eight or sixteen--but rather to command squadrons (16) and flotillas (64) of destroyers. Therefore for a destroyer flotilla there will be 64 destroyers and 5 destroyer leaders; this means that the construction numbers used throughout here adhere to a goal of groups of five rather than eight. Generally the number of Taloran destroyers in service can be deduced through the numbers of Destroyer Leaders, though there is an excess of DLs for various purposes, including flotilla command for large groups of frigates and corvettes away from fleets (though sometimes frigates see fleet duty purposes). These are the first "destroyer built" ships, the newest of which are approaching three thousand gravities of acceleration due to their light frame and integral hull while being built with immense engine power for their mass, and the largest ships in the Taloran fleet to exceed the acceleration of the incredible new Kalammi class battlecruisers. With their sheer sides and flat tops, and sharply-angled bows and sterns with a double-ender design, the Destroyer Leaders start off the series of subtlety different hullforms of Taloran destroyers, which, lacking the inverted double-cruiser sterns and inverted yacht bows, tapering to points which serve finely as ceremonial rams, have a more menacing air, and more resemble German destroyers of the First World War than the 19th century fineness of the larger Taloran ships which could easily be mistaken for yachts or liners were it not for their immense turrets. Destroyer leaders carry two interceptors for scouting. They are not carried in the shuttle bay, but fixed outside of the hull on gravitic rail accelerators for extremely rapid launch.

Trirak (Fury) class Destroyer Leaders. (950 x 95 x 98 meters; .65 b.c., 6.7 million m^3 hull volume; 2 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission, by group: Grp1: 100 (+50 building). Light and Escort Carriers.

Trilash (Defender) class Light Carriers: (1,040 x 105 x 108 meters; .6 b.c., 7.9 million m^3 hull volume; 2.4 megatonnes empty mass + 2 x 300,000 tonne permanently attached sponson pods with all engines and other equipment fitted) Number in commission: 96 + 32 under construction. Energy armament: 6 x 50 MT p.c. in four single turrets and two single casemate mounts. Point-Defence Armament: 12 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 32 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 32 x flak projectors. Weapons busbar capacity: 300 MT/s. Fighter Wing Capacity: 16 space superiourity fighters, 32 Interceptors, 24 torpedo bombers, 8 EW craft, 8 gunboats, 16 assault landers + 8 inteceptors and 4 catapults for rapid-launch scouting duties. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 14 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 2,000g's.

Notes: This class was, based on an old light cruiser hull, intended to be a mass-produced stopgap measure for improving the starfighter fleet in response to the ADN. Hastily designed, it moved the engines and weapons over to the detachable pods, which were then permanently fixed, and gutted the hull design for the fighters. To slow for scouting duties, with hideous mechanical and structural problems, and costing much more than expected, the ships have been rapidly banished to the outer expansion sectors in low-threat areas, and new orders halted, with only the ships under construction being finished.

Escort carriers: 4 experimental ships converted out of fast freighters exist for evaluating the possibility of mandating that some fast freighters be built with conversion for escort carriers in mind in the future, and the effectiveness of such a programme as part of the emergency mobilization scheme. They are not regular fleet elements.

Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts of the Taloran Star Empire.

These ships, by far the most numerous in the Empire, constitute respectively the main defensive screening units, and the primary convoy protection craft, of the Empire. The first are normally arranged with Destroyer Leaders in fast squadrons; light or escort cruisers usually serve as flagships for defensive organizations of Destroyer Escorts, which are also seen screening systems battleships. Other than speed the main difference between the two is the much lighter torpedo armament of Destroyer Escorts.

Destroyer Escorts:

A sizeable number of these vessels are retained even in peacetime for convoy escort and support of the slow battleship squadrons, but also as a reserve in case of wartime, where their convoy escort role would become vastly more important. The ships maintain the energy armament of destroyers but lack heavy torpedo batteries and are much slower. These are the smallest ships which have class names and individual ship names. Frigates, corvettes, torpedo and missile boats, and picket boat classes all have a letter designation for the class followed by a numerical designation for the ship.

Frigates, Corvettes, Torpedo and Missile Boats, and Pickets.

These small craft round out the Taloran Starfleet by providing extensive 'presence' capabilities for light combat and anti-piracy and as further screen support. Frigates and corvettes are general purpose, and save on size compared with Destroyer Escorts due to their intention of short-range usage only, and reliance on Tenders for support, whereas DEs and larger can operate entirely independently. Missile and Torpedo boats are smaller still, while pickets are the smallest craft which can operate on a normal jump cycle, with charged capacitors in reserve for escape evaluations, allowing them to be used as a further reconaissance arm alternative in the fleet.

Semi-combatants of the Imperial Starfleet:

These vessels are armed and capable of defending themselves but not intended to be directly in combat. It is impossible to give class-based statistics for many of the listings because the ships are frequently yard-conversions without centralized planning of old and obsolete warships.

Bombardment specialist craft:

These two designs are oriented around the carrying out of successful system sieges.

Empress Anhilara II class Planetary Assault Carriers. (3,500 x 350 x 355 meters, b.c. .5; 200 million m^3 hull volume; 59.5 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission: 304. Number under construction: 8. Energy armament: 16 x 50 MT p.c. in eight twin turrets. Missile Armament: 64 x Mk.30 four-arm launchers per broadside, 128 in total, with 96 missiles per rail. Point-defense armament: 128 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 256 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 256 x flak projectors. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 192 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 600g's. Onboard craft compliment: 1,200 x 50-tonne aerospace attack fighters of all types (or 800 space superiourity/interceptor/bomber craft in subsidiary Escort Carrier/Space Control role) + 64 assault landers and 64 heavy tank landers capable of transporting a full mechanized division and armoured division each to the surface in one go, with onboard capacity for a full corps.

Princess Trivana class Planetary Assault Carriers. (3,400 x 340 x 355 meters, b.c. .5; 190 million m^3 hull volume; 55 megatonnes empty mass.) Number in commission: 48. Energy armament: 16 x 40 MT p.c. in eight twin turrets. Missile Armament: 64 x Mk.30 four-arm launchers per broadside, 128 in total, with 80 missiles per rail. Point-defense armament: 96 x twin 21cm p.g. turrets; 224 x sixteen-cell missile interceptor launchers; 224 x flak projectors. Maximum instantaneous shield absorption capacity (impact of greater energy than this in the space of a milisecond will burn out and destroy all the ship's shield genators): 192 GTs. (note only half this energy is available to each broadside.) Acceleration: 600g's. Onboard craft compliment: 1440 aerospace attack fighters of all types + 64 assault landers and 64 heavy tank landers capable of transporting a full mechanized division and armoured division each to the surface in one go, with onboard capacity for a full corps.

Siege Battery Ships, All Classes: Based on hulls of standard 64-megatonne merchant ships, these vessels are retrofitted to carry 64 x Assault missile launchers with ten reloads each, and 512 x Mk.30 four-arm launchers in all with 600 missiles per rail (half immediately available, half in deep-storage that must be manually loaded into the magazine between engagements). Each ship is protected by 128 x twin 21cm p.g. mounts, 256 flak accelerators and 256 RAM launchers, and the designs are capable of 410g's of acceleration. They are unarmoured and built identical to civilian standards, and have light shielding only. 480 are in commission in all and 32 more freighters are undergoing conversion. Uniquely the ships are built with all the missile launchers on one side, and the magazines extending to the opposite side of the hull, where the umbilicals and sensor fits are located, to add in the positional pounding of enemy fortifications.

Tenders

Gunboat Tenders: Numerous classes in the 25 - 40 megatonne range comprising support ships for between 128 to 256 gunboats apiece. Usually armed with 16 - 24 x 40 or 50 MT cannon and numerous point defence. Many are converted from old dreadnoughts and battleships and therefore have reasonable defensive capacity and speed. 320 are currently in commission of all types.

Corvette Tenders: A generic name for ships which actually tend to frigates, corvettes, torpedo boats, missile boats, and pickets, these ships, unlike the gunboats, are never carried from destination to destination attached to the Tender, but instead just require it constantly nearby for their proper functioning and operational support. Around 290 of these vessels are currently in service, and most are elderly cruisers, battleships, etc, largely disarmed except for defensive and secondary weapons and their hulls gutted in areas for cargo holds for military stores and fuel.

Miscellaneous armed ships:

Armed Scouts: Numerous small vessels for scouting in distant reaches. About 1,600 are in commission in all, and they have a light defensive armament comparable to a frigate and usually mass around 500,000 tonnes.

Galleasses. Specialist heavily armed freighters, these 20 - 30 megatonne ships have the armament of a light cruiser and immense reinforced cargo holds for carrying valuable cargoes under military protection through hostile space when no escorts are readily available, or are deemed insufficient. 376 in commission.

Bouy Tenders: Armed vessels for maintenance of navigational aides in hostile areas. About 400 are in commission.

Non-combatant vessels:

Mobile Deepdocks: 192.
Relay Tenders: 4,800.
AOEs: 3,800.
Oilers: 3,900.
RSDs: 2,480.
HRS: 6,400.
Station Tenders: 7,400.
Unarmed navigational survey ships: 1,160.
Hospital ships: 1,500.
Troop Transports of all types: 7,300.
Light Service Couriers: About 12,000.
