Oooh. Well in the original history I had them create the Kainan after they'd started their fall into decedence and did not have enough mages of combat capability to keep their vast empire pacified. But it would probably be easier to just convert them to a secret police. I just got an image in my head of a kroot (which is kinda like how I imagine the Kainan look) with a russian hat on and speaking threateningly in Russian.frigidmagi wrote:No, you misunderstand me. My statement was that the Teleran's are such powerful sorcerers that they have no need of a soldier class like the Kainan, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.Though I'm not sure where you got that they're powerful sorcerers. These guys were the stock soldiers, the Teleran sure as hell did not share their secrets with them (or the Marad). How I kind of impictured them was this, in your armies you've probably got 20-30 mages, but you still need several thousand troops. These several thousand troops were pretty much all Kainan. With the Teleran not fearing their own casualties anymore and not really giving a shit about the casualties of the Kainan that caused a further dip of decadence (kind of like the Roman Empire had).

GOD DAMN IT! I just lost the page with my Turtle people. So here is the abbreviated version.
Bipedal turtle-like humanoids called Chelyds, live in coastal and riverine city states run by guilds. Religion is a form of nature-worship, and ritual practices. Government is a council of guild elders. Magic is a martial discipline, commanded through meditation and willpower, with ritual movements and incantations to keep it controlled. Physically draining to the user.
1)Soma is the first mastered and consists of abilities that let the magician enhance physical and mental abilities beyond their usual capacity. Making themselves faster, stronger, more heavily armored, and gaining the ability to fly are in this discipline and they take the least drain.
2) Elementalism is exactly what it sounds like, and takes moderate drain
3)The last discipline mastered is Essentialism, which is the manipulation of raw magic into effects such as wards, and non-elemental battle spells, divination, etc. The drain from these spells is massive, but they are also very powerful. Even mages who can use them do not do so often.
There are of course also demonologists and necromancers, but these are not what we would call accepted in society and get hunted down and butchered...
I will have more on the culture, history, and biology of these guys when I reconstitute the file.... magic was just what I was working on when I accidentally hit refresh.

I suggest a race I have seen once before kinda implemented but not fully, the Lycaraus
They are lesser lycanthropes on the order of having 2 forms, their natural form in which they appear to be a member of any race and are capable of doing anything a normal person can do.
Then their second form is a wild manifestation of their own worst nightmare. They are savage and direct in this form, not able to cobble together more then 5 or 6 words into a sentance and even then they have trouble with grammar, its not that the same personality is not there from the first form but its overshadowed by this sort of savagery.
Luckily they can control their changes most of the time but if they are subjected to certain effects or situations they instantly jump forms to savage and continue for at least a few hundred seconds to an hour in their savage form without being able to change back.

The Uri is a elephant sized bovine, with large, sharp horns capable of smashing any man portable armor and a temper to match. It travels in large herds on the plains.Caesar wrote:"...those animals which are called uri. These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, color, and shape of a bull. Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied. These the Germans take with much pains in pits and kill them. The young men harden themselves with this exercise, and practice themselves in this sort of hunting, and those who have slain the greatest number of them, having produced the horns in public, to serve as evidence, receive great praise. But not even when taken very young can they be rendered familiar to men and tamed. The size, shape, and appearance of their horns differ much from the horns of our oxen. These they anxiously seek after, and bind at the tips with silver, and use as cups at their most sumptuous entertainments."

Aurochs. Fuckin Huge Wild Cattle, makes the nastiest rodeo bull like sane. More of a Forest beast, as there were few open plains in Germany at the time.frigidmagi wrote:The Uri is a elephant sized bovine, with large, sharp horns capable of smashing any man portable armor and a temper to match. Yes I am aware of Aurochs. No, these are not Aurochs. This is me taking Cesar's writing and making something different out of it, Tev.
So like I said, large elephant sized cattle on the plains, horns that would make the Texas Longhorn weep and die from envy. That sort of thing.

Uri is another name for Aurochs. Its a fine choice of name for frigid's hell cattle, as it carries less real world baggage than Aurochs.

As demanded by Frigid...I finally managed to work up a map....it's not perfect, but we can fiddle with it more later....
most of the action we'll see should take place in the Eastern hemisphere of the world, where the two big continents are. The Western hemisphere belongs to the Ageless Empire (the southern most continent) while the northern two are...well...whatever.

#59 Creating new races of our own?
I agree. I think if we were to perhaps create our own races then it would turn out to be at least something different typical fantasy. I like Tortoise's idea of reptilian creatures, so maybe perhaps we should make creatures of perhaps cat-races, or wolf, or whatever to add into it.Why?
No listen to me for a minute here, why do we need orcs, elves and dwarves? I love em as much as the next fantasy fan but they're not necessary and to be honest if you use them you end up having to compete with Tolkien either be trying to be just like him or by trying to prove how different you are from him. That's not a knock on Tolkien or fantasy that does use the three above, it is possible to write Tolkien like fantasy that is fun to read or turn everything on its head. The question is, do we want to?
That's my suggestion anyhow.

While I have nothing against Cat or Dog people I think you would have to work pretty damn hard to avoid them being cliches.

Well, you could always go with a cybernetically-enhanced race of cat people, hyper-intelligent and beyond what we would term "emotions." They wouldn't really have cat characteristics but they'd groom themselves with lasers and powerful plasma-based instruments. As for the dog people... maybe an entire race of Woody Allen impersonators?

roflcopter. but I think I figi on that no.
Umm.. no, that's not what i meant. Meaning more like native peoples of some sort and taking on a few of the animal characteristics (beyond obviously looking like half animal and half human) like heightened sense of hearing, and smell. and just be a little more creative with the idea.

I'm not trying to veto your idea right off the bat, but I am telling you what you're suggesting has been done pretty often and as such it's not really standing out that much.
Also most of us would prefer if you used "you" as opposed to "u," no offense.

Additionally, avoiding txt-speak and typing properly shows that thought went into one's posts, and that the poster took the time to ensure that his or her thoughts were communicated well.
We don't ask that you be an English major, but we do ask that you take the time to say something in your posts, instead of getting the one-liner "lol" posts.

I was asking about the term "LOL" because I personally find it odd to use "haha" as a way to express my amusement. Not that I want to break your "rules" or anything.rhoenix wrote:Additionally, avoiding txt-speak and typing properly shows that thought went into one's posts, and that the poster took the time to ensure that his or her thoughts were communicated well.

If you would read above this whole conversation started because I used "u", within a decent amount of text, and thought. I don't mind if people prefer I use proper English. I can work on it. I just haven't had a reason to for 2 years, but going so far as to say I do not put any thought into my posts offends me.
I am sorry I don't sit around reading books on philosophy all day so I don't have massive amounts to say on the cosmos and everything that the world could possibly encompass. But I do contribute what I can, and what I have just my own imagination, and life experiences.
