Avatar: Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender. Korra is the next Avatar after Aang, "a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl" who is hotheaded, independent and "ready to take on the world". Korra comes from the Southern Water Tribe, and Aang and Katara's son Tenzin is her Airbending teacher.

One of the story's settings is Republic City, a "metropolis powered by steampunk-type technology," "inhabited by people from all nations." Here Korra must deal with rampant crime and an anti-bender revolt.

Hrm. If the new Avatar is a teenager already, then that means that Aang died some 50-55 years after the end of the show, which would make him about 65-70 or so at his death. Given that powerful benders are referenced as living to the age of 100 or above while still retaining their vitality and power (see that crazy king from Omashu), that seems surprisingly early.

Of course, given what Aang is, it's entirely possible he died violently.

From what I understand, turns out that 100 years as an icecube wasn't a freebie. It actually lessened his life span.

Also consider that Aang was not born on the day of the death of Roku, he was born before it. It was just a portent at the time of the death of Roku that told the monks the spirit world decided Aang was to be the next Avatar, at least thats how I have come to understand things.

Sorry, you're wrong. When Aang and Zuko are both learning what happened the day of Roku's death, Aang's vision of it ends with Roku's dragon surrounding him just before the lava hit, and then Aang was taking his first breath.

The implication is that it's an instant transfer to a new-born at the moment of death/birth. Since many cultures East and West believed the soul entered a newborn with its first breath, this follows logically.

Now, the Avatar is naturally going to be a Bender, even if the child's parents may not be Benders themselves. However, since the genetics for Bending seems widely spread, the family may have had an ancestor who was a Bender, and consider the child a throwback.

It's an interesting theory, anyway.

I really cannot wait to see this series come about. There's a lot they can do to build upon how the last one ended.

I'm tentatively looking forward to this. Yes, ATLA was fucking brilliant, and there's a lot of potential for that sequel especially with the same creative team working on it, but I've seen sequels/prequels/adaptions gone awry too often to trust it WILL be good (look at what happened with the live-action movie ).
