Your kitty is cute.

lol whut

she's only 3 months old... not even hit the ol' puberty yet. (She is scheduled to be spayed at the end of next month though, so the vet must figure it is right around the corner.)

A kitten is something you can cup in one hand. That's just a young cat. A very PRETTY one but still just a young cat.

She's a kitten. A big, gangly kitten that will become an adolescent cat in the near future but is now running around, getting into things, and tripping over herself.

Fun fact about her size: just two months ago, she was so tiny. Looked like a balding ferret; very very skinny.

What happened was she and her sister was just abandoned in a box on the side of the road, for who knows how long. Then my sister heard them and brought them home. She kept one cat, and I got the other.

First week I had her, she weighed in at barely 2 pounds and had some kind of ear infection. Next month, she was just barely shy of 4 pounds, ears perfectly cured! More than doubled in just a month, and as you can see, she's looking really good now. Nice thick, soft fur with the color really coming through, and she's no longer skeleton shaped at all.

The cat's sister, living with my sister, is apparently even bigger.

This really makes me mad about those "animal rights" people who hate us taking pets. If these kittens were just left in the wild, they probably would have been screwed. Now, they are living better lives then they ever could outside.

There's never any shortage of food (even if I sometimes make her wait until 8:00 to eat the can rather than the 5:45am she likes to wake me up to eat it...) Never any concerns about unclean water. She doesn't have to worry about freezing to death over the winter (though, I do keep the thermostat down somewhat low - heat is expensive - it is never dangerously low).

She gets medical attention - vaccines, cures - cats in captivity have twice the life expectancy of a cat in the wild.

And she gets near constant people attention, too. I spend a fair chunk of the day with her sleeping on my lap while I sit here doing my computer work, and at night, she almost always jumps into bed with one of us.

Then there is HUNTERS AND KITTY CATS, which she has started to really win at recently. She used to shake her butt a little before pouncing, giving me enough warning to pull out at the last second and run away... now she fakes it or skips it, getting me pre-emptively! Good game... soon I'll have to rename it as "HUNTED AND KITTY CAT!"

Anyway, I'm sure I don't need to convince any of you, but I just find that really irritating. Pets live good lives and they like it. Everyone wins!

That is indeed a kitten and it is cute.

If the kittens were abandoned at such a young age there is no possible way they would have survived. Also most of those folks don't really give a damn about the animals physical wellfare, all that matters is that they are free of the taint that is humanity in their eyes. Just consider them another form of religious zealot Adam.

Cats have been living with us for over 5000 years or something like that. This pretty much is the existence they have evolved for and they benefit from the relationship enormously. To be fair humans benefit pretty well from it to. Having a pet is proven to have health benefits.

We get entertainment, a companion with a calming purr and soft fur, and in many circumstances pest-control as well.

They get food, water, safety, medical care, and all the attention they desire.

Sounds like a good trade to me

I always loved how our cat and jack russell got along. For whatever reason, every dog we've ever had has been so friendly that we'd joke they'd lick an intruder to death. Our cat got along well enough with the dogs (it was always funny seeing Gizmo our dog run around the park next door to us without a leesh, and Oscar our cat pounce on him from the grass. Gizmo would retaliate by licking Oscar in the face)

The kitten and the hamster have a kinda strange relationship.

The cat is just infinitely interested in the hamster, but apparently not in a hunger sort of way.

Image

She'll just sit there watching him for hours.

Until finally deciding to just lay down and take a nap, purring the whole time.

Young cats raised with other pets that are natural prey animals (hamsters and rats for example) normally socialize to regard the other animal as part of the household and not food and something like 50% of the time take the whole species off the menu.

The most dangerous thing is the cat trying to play with the hamster can be too much.

I mean the way she plays with us, her toys, or presumably other cats (I just have the one, so I've never seen cat on cat play!) can easily be too rough for the little, and old, hamster. (He is about 2 years old. Old for a hamster.)

She sometimes tries to grab at him, claws safely put away, but all that really manages to do is terrify the little guy. Same with nipping at his fur. She doesn't mean to be harmful at all - if she wanted to hurt him, he'd probably be dead already - but it is still terrifying to the poor guy.

So, the end result is we only let her play with him when one of us is sitting right there with them, and mostly don't let the hamster out of the cage when she is around.

Nevertheless, Cynical Cat's info is fascinating. I figured she wouldn't hurt him, even if for no other reason than that the hamster is under my protection, but giving up on the whole species is amazing.

Anyone who says cats aren't social animals obviously don't know them very well!

(I say as kitty sleeps on my lap.)

And Minx, what a cute picture!

For the last 4000 years we've been forcing solitary cats to live close together, in close proximity and cooperation with other species, and we've been breeding the ones that adapt well to that with each other. Now keep in mind physical appearance is the easiest thing to breed for, but we can create new breeds of cats over a dozen breeding generations in less than fifty years. The Russians created a breed of domesticated fox after about fifty years.

We've made them into social animals. There's accounts of feral cats nursing their sister's kitten and unrelated cats acting as midwives and biting the umbilical cords when another cat is giving birth.

The closer related species of feline to the housecat are generally speaking not social group animals. That being said, alley cats are known to gather in colonies and some observers have suggested that they're adopting group hunting material.

So basically Cat up there is right. We've made them into social animals and they're only getting better at it.
