and it looks like a Robin/Wolverine cross in the background for the sidekick...

I believe that was part of the DC/Marvel crossover/merger that became Amalagam comics for awhile...

but I could be wrong.

you're right elheru. I was mistaken. But! BUT! I did find the real culprit...

Back in 03-04 timeline Wizard magazine commisioned Jim Lee to do an "all star super hero" cover. That, apparently, were his only instructions on the project. This was the result, not exactly what they had in mind.

Apparently the site I was looking at was misinformed. It wasn't Wizard, but Mad. Mad #438 which came out January 7th of 04. They did a superhero spoof. Frank Miller also did some filler art for the issue.
