Clash of the Titans was a remake of the 1981 movie... Only I have to say... Huh... Not, really. New characters are introduced, major story changes are made and the old characters are changed deeply. I didn't mind that, a writer shouldn't feel to bound to follow every bit of the old movie when making a remake, otherwise why should the good movie goers just go see the original?
Still the movie runs through a plot that deserves more of a walk, maybe even a stroll so you can appreciate it a bit. And characters aren't really dug to into, so it's hard to connect with anyone besides Io (Gemma Aktins who does a fine job acting and is the hottest chick in the film) or Perseus (Sam Washingon as y'all know is a bit stiff, most of my buddies said it was the avatar character with all the interesting bits drained out). The basic story while slashing up the original myth and ignoring the original movie utterly is good but needs more time to do the job. Let me be honest the butchering job on the myth and the first movie don't bother me, it's not like to many people know the myth or care and Hollywood can't even be arsed to get American history or Christian stories right so I expect this and just get over it.
All and all I give this movie a C+.... Ehhhh Maybe a B-. Not bad, the elements for a really good film are there but they rushed it to much. Seriously there are times when I felt the movie had been made with the assumption that the audience had ADD. Catch it as a matinee or if you got the spare time and cash. Otherwise... wait for Tron or Robin Hood Gladiator.
Beyond here are spoilers, due to a obscure verse in the Book of *COUGHGOUGHCOUGHCOUGH!* Chapter *muttermutter* I don't use spoiler tags, ye are warned.
Seriously I'll ruin the whole movie for ya.
Back off man!
Fine be that way....
Okay I won't go through the whole damn movie just the strong points and the weak points.
1: New characters, I liked Io and the soldiers. In the 1st movie the soldiers were faceless nobodies. In this one they have distinguishing features and almost have personalities. However you don't really spend any time on the soldiers or others. So they're just empty archetypes so you can't get attached to them. This makes their deaths at the hand of Caliban, Medusa and the scorpions rather... meaningless. Come on man, give us something, we knew nothing about them. Peruses declares at the gates of Medusa's temple that he only knew one great man before meeting them and now he knows 4. I kinda wish I knew them to Peruses, to bad the movie didn't introduce us.
2: Peruses comes off as wooden and stiff. I'm actually gonna argue in favor of this. His family is wiped out in front of him. He's send off on a quest for strangers after they almost torture him to death. And he finds out he's the product of rape and deception. I would be a bit uptight to.
3: In the beginning Peruses father (as in the man who actually takes the trouble to raise him) tells him that it's not the blood relation that ties them together, but the love they have for one another. And that love is so valuable and important that gods and kings war for it. That's a hell of a theme you're flirting with there boys, you should have done something with it.
Instead you dropped it when Zeus starts aiding Peruses on the sly against Hades. Sure this guy is a jerk who raped my Mom and hot her killed but hey we got blood! I'm being to tough on Peruses here though, Zeus was offering him ammo in a firefight and when you're empty you don't ask questions. Of course why Zeus is helping him to buck Hades when Hades is acting on his orders is... odd. If you know Hades is gonna turn, why not simply smack Hades down? Why depend on a son who hates your guts for very damn good reasons?
4: Hades is the bad guy, getting Zeus to turn him loose so he can become more powerful (Zeus needs the love of humanity, Hades gets off on our fear and whimpering). This is a plot to overthrow Zeus and take the big chair. Huh... Okay even the Greeks thought Hades was a scary merciless guy but he wasn't Satan and we should stop shoehorning. Besides we already had a great villain!
5: Caliban becomes the husband of Peruses' mother and the guy who locked him in a wooden box and left him to die. Struck by lighting for trying to pull that shit, he's fucked up disfigured and sitting around in a swamp. Hades recruits him to kill Peruses so the boy won't fuck up his mojo. Why he changed his name? I dunno.
6: Argos has a problem. While the nobles and the king are having huge lavish parties, there are crowds of poor people literally huddling on the streets screaming for help. What the problem is I don't know. Famine? Plague? Monsters killing everyone outside the wall? They never say.
7: The Zealot, the last guy in Argos who remains faithful to the gods. Is he a priest? Why haven't you killed him when you're burning temples?
Like I said the elements are there but they need more work and the movie needs more time. I liked Gemma's performance and though Sam did a good job to. The minor actors put on a good job but weren't given shit to work with really.
