I wanted to chat about the film and the SDN thread has gone off its own direction.

So you probably know the premise and all. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked Blomkamp's short films (they felt like a visual representation of what my sci-fi dreams are like) and I'm glad he could translate it to a full-length movie.

I get a little nervous talking about these sorts of things since I'm living with a guy know who actually knows what he's talking about when he says these things about movies, but I thought the movie was well thought out and had its moments of good black humor, including a few I only realized in hindsight.

Anyone mind if we talk a bit more spoiler-ifically here? I want to say examples.

I have no objection, I have yet to see it but I typically read spoilers anyways.

It wasn't what I expected it to be. I'm still trying to decide if it was a great movie or a piece of shit. The writing and even a good bit of the acting was put behind the visual effects. I felt like the whole story was pushed along by what gross thing are we gonna see next. Now don't get me wrong, the premise of it and the overall theme was good, but I don't know if that many exploding heads/bodies was necessary to prove a point. <this next line contains a semi spoiler> I think the best part of the movie is at the end when the wife shows a metal flower and they cut to an alien making one. That to me made a bigger statement than the whole movie did.

I don't know. I'm a huge fan of dialogue and story telling, and to me this movie left me wanting more.

Woohoo spoiler alerts! (We don't have spoiler tags here, do we?)

Anyway, it wasn't to prove a point. The man just enjoys his ultraviolence - there's more than one reason he was picked to direct the Halo movie. Black humor, too. I only later realized the joke where Wikus' assistant was putting on the face mask and he's like, "Don't wear that; it's for sissies," or something, then gets sprayed in the face and starts the action. On that note, I also liked how Wikus was portrayed as being rather dumb from the get-go, with even his mom commenting on how he was never the brightest boy, so when he does stupid things it's perfectly in character and doesn't detract from the movie at all. When he was trying to call his wife on his cell phone, I was going, "No, stupid, they can trace you!" But he is stupid, and they traced him, so I was satisfied.

I'm pretty sure that alien - I won't say prawn - was actually Wikus. Speaking of that art, I remember a scene with his wife showing off a paper mache bowl he made for her. Did they show anything else he made for her? It actually looked like a pretty cool metal rose. Makes me wonder if his transformation made him smarter in the end.

Wilkus was more than just a stupid git, he was a horrifically self-absorbed, morally despicable Nazi. I cheered as he was shocked by electric prods by the Comically Evil Villains and at all the gruesome transformations. He deserved every last bit of that and more for the alien eggs scene alone.

I liked that the movie was about his Kafkaesque transformation from scum to a more upstanding, albeit bug-looking, individual. Unfortunately, the movie degenerated into a retarded shootfest just as he was finally reformed, so I didn't particularly enjoy him there, either.

Plus, the usual, silly Comically Evil Villains, plot-holes. lack of explanation, lack of resolution, etc.

I give the move 3/5. Cool idea, bad execution.

Have a very nice day.
