"It's Sophie," she said into the phone, trying to figure out how she was going to phrase this with all the others around. She had elected not to give away the fact that the pack had not officially elected an Alpha yet, whether or not it was otherwise obvious.
"The others here want a look at Smoky Mountain Futures' financial records, if we can get our hands on them. They're willing to exchange us a favor if we can get the records to them."
She hesitated for just a second, wincing internally at the conversation she knew she was about to have.
"They want to know... what our Alpha thinks."

Alex chuckled. "This must be a fun phone call for you Sof. I'm all for it, but let me check with our fearless Fianna. Hey, Arianne, the locals want us to get Smokey Mountain's financials and share the data with them if we get the chance. You cool with that?"

Arianne gave Alex one of the strangest looks she'd ever had the chance to. "I don't see where it would be a problem, not like they couldn't find it out sooner or later on their own. What are they offering?

Alex covered the mouthpiece of his phone and smiled, showing teeth. "You're a real bitch, you know that?" he said. Then he uncovered the phone. "Ask them what they're willing to pay Sof."

Arianne smiled sweetly, "Of course I am, dahlink. Thanks for the compliment."
She returned her attention to the road. Too bad Alex was a were - they could have had a lot of fun together. She loved bringing down arrogant assholes, making them beg for what she had.

"You have no idea," she said to Alex as he went to check with the others. She'd half-expected him to dictate orders to her imperiously. It was a pleasant surprise that he did not.
Having received the question back (and realizing she should have thought to ask that beforehand), she nodded to herself. "I'll ask, hang on."
Sophie muted her bluetooth headset's microphone, and several moments of discussion followed. Finally she un-muted the mike, and relayed the offer.
"She says that if we're willing to break into Smoky Mountain Futures and steal all their files along with the bone, she'll take out the last of the Bledsons, the wyrmshine, and help us override the security system for the building."
Personally, Sophie thought this a bit of a one-sided deal. The other wolves were plainly going to take the wyrmshiners and Bledsons out regardless of any deals, being none too enamored of having wyrmshine runners passing through their town. But then Sophie at least was planning on breaking into Smoky Mountain Futures anyway as well, if not for the Fetish than for information. If the Knoxville crew wanted to clean up some problems while they were doing so, there wasn't really a problem with that.
"What do you guys think?"

"Let me run in by the others Sof." He covered the mouthpiece and turned back to the room. "They'll dust the last of the Bledsens, take out the Wyrmshine, and take out the security system for us. Nothing we can't do ourselves. Nothing we can't do for ourselves, but we're just picking up something from a place we're going to break into anyway."

"We're getting what we came here for, they're getting what they want. It seems too good to be true." Came a deep growling voice from the covered bulge in the back of the jeep.

Arianne growled. Basically they were just being offered to be allowed to do what they'd intended to do anyway.
"What they're saying is we're not worth a real deal. They're not looking at us a pack, Alex. Megan's still treating us like a unorganized group of pups." She sighed.
"But for now, we're going to have to take it. Maybe this will end up with us in alliance with them. That's not a bad thing, having friends in the city."
She thinks. "Tell them that if we find anything we think they need to know about, we'll share it. If this guy's what we think he is, he needs to be stopped for Gaia's sake. Protecting Gaia is more important than reputation." she said grudgingly. Reputation was -nearly- everything to her... but Gaia came first.

Alex took his hand away from the mouthpiece. "Let them know Gaia comes first Sof. We find anything useful to them, they'll get it."

"We'll share anything useful we find," said Sophie to the other wolves, not bothering to mute her bluetooth headset, "but we aren't gonna bend over backwards to salvage his stuff if we have to rip him and everything he's doing apart for Gaia's sake. We might have to take this guy down hard, if the things he's mixed up in are any indication."

Megan looked at Sophie for a long moment, then sighed. "I remember when I thought that solved things..." She shook her head sadly, then continued. "Just do not leave any traces. Even if he is there for you to ... deal with... I would still like to have the paperwork so I know who is working with him, and who is backing him." The voice was a gentle reminder to her fellow Glasswalker -- follow the money.
"However, since you're willing to deal, let's set up the Contract." Megan pulled out what most people would assume was a Blackberry variant. Sophie knew better, as Megan flipped it open and spoke. "Kakarrot? Open Contract."
The Blackberry's screen flashed, a very cartoonish image of a cockroach skittering around as Megan laid the device down between herself and Sophie. "I, Megan Alexander, hereby state that I and my pack will do the following task in exchange for equal favors: We will search out the source of Blackfire Whiskey in this town and destroy it and the whiskey, as well as any Banes that might be using it."
Megan paused, looking expectantly at Sophie.

The criss-crossing verbal traffic of the others preparing for the next Adventure seemed to settle into a relaxing, meditative hum - sitting as he was on the seat, Sees-Faces-In-Stars seemed to weave back and forth slightly in the seat as he relaxed.
The more he relaxed, the more the subtle wind seemed to flow around him, and through him. A smile formed on the corners of his canine mouth as he felt the eagerness for experience that the winds wanted. His eyes snapped open, eagerly taking in all details on the way to their destination in the Farting Metal Beast keeping them safe for now.
This would be a good night.

The mechanisms varied, but a contract was a very common ritual amongst Glasswalkers, one the others would likely be shocked by, but what of it? They had agreed that this was what they were going to do, after all, and so long as she hedged it properly, it shouldn't matter at all.
She fumbled a second for the right words (it didn't matter terribly, but she was in the presence of a Cockroach spirit) and semi-consciously reached down for the pendant around her neck, a small figurine made of twisted wire in the shape of a six-legged insect. It had no powers itself, and in fact it didn't look all that much like a cockroach, but she did so anyway. It felt like the thing to do.
"I, Sophia Aran," she said, "hereby state that I and my pack will do the following task in exchange for equal favors." That wasn't exactly the wording they used at home, but this was a different place, and when in Rome...
"We will investigate Smokey Mountain Futures, retrieve any documentation we can about their activities and finances, and deliver all such information to Megan Alexander and her pack," she paused just for a second before adding a hedge "so long as retrieving said documentation does not prevent us from acquiring the fetish we were sent to acquire, nor places Gaia in danger."
She looked up at Megan to see if that was acceptable, or if there would need to be more negotiations. Sometimes it was fortunate that Cockroach was patient...

Megan seemed to have no problems with the statement, as she nodded and held out her right hand to shake on the deal. With the handshake, the deal will be sealed, and each party tied to their statement.

Sophie shook Megan's hand with only the slightest qualm about what she was doing, but then she pushed it aside. The others had agreed to these actions anyhow. Why should they care about a Glasswalker ritual to seal the deal? She at least intended to hold them all to it regardless of the contract, and after all, she hadn't complained about their damned hunting party the night before.
Still, she had the sense that she was going to catch hell for this...

The cartoon cockroach on the blackberry watched the handshake, and beeped in acknowledgement. Briefly, the screen scrolled a transcript of each one's vow, then the cockroach did a little dance and skittered off-screen. "Thank you Kakarot," Megan said to the little machine spirit as she picked up the Blackberry and put it back into her jacket.
"Now, we'll be entering Knoxville soon. There's a parking lot where we can stop and get you back with your Pack, then we'll split ways," Megan said conversationally, while opening a small briefcase. She removed what looked like a blue keycard, passing it to Sophie. "This will get you past the outer security, but I've not had a chance to examine what might be set up inside. Cameras are probably the easy part." Megan was sticking to her part of the bargain already.
"After you're finished, you can meet up with us at Hannigan's Bar tomorrow evening. It's in Old Town, you can find it easily. We'll talk more then. If you need a place to stay, go to Smiley's Hotel on 53rd Street. He asks no questions and rents by the hour."
++++
The convoy of cars passed the Knoxville city limits, and the lead car drove expertly through the streets. Within ten minutes, the SVU with Megan and Sophie pulled over into a secluded parking lot on a nondescript street, expecting the out-of-town wolves to follow suit.
Megan gave Sophie a polite smile. "Here we are. Good luck with your pack.

Alex released the seat belt as Arianne pulled in to a stop. The Shadow Lord opened the door and stepped out. "Hey Soph, manage not to get eaten by the big bad wolf?" he said with a grin.

Sophie returned Megan's smile as she got out. "Thanks," she said, omitting the fact that she would probably need it. She took the security card and got out of the car, smiling and shaking her head at Alexander's lame joke.
"I thought you were the big bad wolf," she said as she got back into the car.

Megan was standing by, listening to this inter-pack chatter with amusement. "We are running on a tight schedule, so I hope you'll not mind if we try to hurry this along. Do you know how to get there?" The question was directed more to Sophie and Alexander, standing outside the Jeep.
