#1 Delta and Northwest Airlines bankrupt

Post by Anonymous »

For those of you that haven't heard, the world's third and fourth largest airlines, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York. This now takes the total number of insolvent US airlines to 6, and as of now, 51% of all US airline capacity is owned by companies operating in bankruptcy protection.

If you have travel booked on Delta or Northwest, don't cancel it, as they will continue to operate for at least the near future, and there might even be some opportunities for discount travel, however, I'd advise caution booking more than 6 months ahead of time. The US airline industry is clearly in a deep crises, and tens of thousands of jobs will be lost even if these companies can get their act together and survive.

I personally think it's bullshit that companies can declare "bankruptcy", yet still operate. Obviously their business efforts and stradegies failed. Make room for fresh blood in the field. You had your chance, and just admitted you blew it.

It can serve the public good, though, Robert. Take the example of an airline that declares bankruptcy- the fact that they're still operating allows them to continue providing service.

Generally bankruptcy is a way to keep a company going until it's bought out anyway.

Yes but if I recall this isn't the first time the airlines have done this and had the government bail them out so they could turn around and fuck over the customers with price gouging and the like.

Personally I'm not inclined to want to use my tax dollar to bail out the losers. I have to do enough of that paying towards the welfare fucks. Just get the other airlines to honor their tickets and just drive them under and finish killing them off. The other airlines will recieve a greater profit which is good for them. We'll get reliable service which is good for us. And with less competition prices might actually go down a little bit.

This is bad news for me, what with living in the hub of Delta and all. Gonna be losing lots of jobs around here, and if Delta leaves then Boeing might pull out and move their plant like they've been talking for the past few years.
