#1 Looking into getting a laptop
A desktop replacement, basically. DarkSilver gave me the advice of looking up HP, Alienware, and Spyder primarily - with that in mind, I found this laptop on Amazon:
So far, this looks to be an early winner, for the following reasons:
* beefy video, so I can handle things like mass Effect 2 if I ever feel like playing it
* good amount of memory, good for multitasking
* good CPU, for getting stuff done
* good-sized screen
If anyone has any recommendations for another comparable laptop, I'd be happy to listen.

Toshiba is NEVER best on the market. They are horrible peices of crap.
Every Toshiba I ever owned, or anyone I know ever owned, has gone to rot and crap in short time. They are horrible machines.

every laptop I've owned, in the past 6 years, except for the very first, has been a HP.
I'm currently typing this on a 3 year old Pavilion dv7 series laptop.
The very first i owned was a Toshiba, that I ended up replacing within the first 12 months of operation, after i already had to send it in for repaired TWICE in that year.
Every HP I've owned (I've only ever replaced the laptops for upgrade reasons, never because they broke with general usage) has worked flawlessly for me.

Ok, so beyond two alternate laptops made by Toshiba, and a rendition of "HP sucks - no Toshiba sucks", does anyone have any other recommendations of a specific laptop, or things to look for when considering one nowadays?
I'm looking for a desktop replacement, but not necessarily a gaming rig (unless being able to handle Mass Effect 2 counts).

My thanks to all who've replied here and via IM. I settled on a HP DV6 2190 at a couple tasty discounts.
