I'm surprised nobody has decided to comment on it yet. I haven't got it, but I am thinking of buying it.

Do you like Starcraft 1 and think all other RTS's since then have been pretty shit?
If so, it's a must buy.
For everyone else, it seems to be worth putting up with shitty business practices for, so if you don't mind old school RTS romps, it seems to be worth it, if you have the time, money, and inclination.

I played it....I wasn't impressed by it in the slightest. Blizzard has done what they always do, take a aged game model that works, takes the features from others that works and cannibalizes them, and put it to a very high polish.
SC2 plays like SC1, only more graphically intensive, apparently I'm told the story is great...but meh.
But like Hotfoot says, unless you like shitty business practices and a generally apathetic publisher that takes the community for granted.....it's skippable.

I will disagree with Hotfoot and DS in saying that it's skippable.
I played the game all the way through and enjoyed it.
Yes, it is pretty much the same as SC1 as far as unit and resource management go. There are a few new things added for resource management and gathering that help some but overall it's much the same. Same goes for units in management and production.
Some new features over the original SC:
New Units -
This is to be expected, of course. Some good, some rather underwhelming. The Banshee anti-ground aircraft is pretty nice. The Thor walker is pretty awesome in the amount of damage it can deal and take and has a decent arty area attack... You've got a ghost variant called the specter that can do a good deal of direct psychic damage but loses the lockdown ability. The Reaper and Marauder infantry units are pretty interesting. One is an area damage anti-infantry specialist with grenade launchers and the other is a fast attack close combat infantry.
Upgrades and Research -
You can collect protoss and zerg research points to create new upgrades and units for your army like the Hercules super transport, regenerating metal for your vehicles, automated defenses for your ground buildings instant build supply depots and the ability to deep strike troops in. Plus you can buy upgrades for your units and buildings to permanently increase their abilities. Bigger blast radius, more health, faster movement, more armor, etc.
Mercenaries -
You can hire mercenary companies in the game to drop suped up versions of your troops in to combat. There's a cost and a limit to the amount of troops per mission you can utilize but most of them are badass enough to make it worth it.
Those are the big things that stick out as new to the game.
But as has been said, it plays very similarly to the original Starcraft. I wouldn't call it a pass as it is a good game despite Activision's hands in it. And the storyline does work well and is very good IMO.
In the end it's up to your individual tastes when it comes to RTS games because there are a few variations, but I enjoyed the game and don't regret buying it. Haven't played much multiplayer yet but if anyone else picks it up and wants to play I'll be happy to skirmish.

It should be noted that since the person who originally put up the topic is Australian, that the region localization will very much fuck with him. From what I understand, the new Battle.net shuffles you off into different areas based on your region, and Australia is in the same local region as the islands, and won't be able to p lay with us Amerikaners or Euros. I'm not even sure about Euros and US being able to play together.

This is a good point. Something I have a feeling we'll be seeing at some point in the near future though is some sort of server hack or private server setup. If and When that happens we could possibly set it up for all of us to play together.

Given the extensive community already dedicated to Starcraft 1 with their tournaments and "perfect balance" and all that, they really couldn't have changed the units and resource management all that much without risking a bloody revolution.
If the story is good as you say, I might give it a try.

Why would we want a bunch unit changes? I like new units but I sure as hell don't want to give up the old ones. Not to mention it wouldn't make sense in universe, as militiaries don't often do a complete change over in a couple of years.

Since I understand it wouldn't put us on random matchups but could we go against each other since we're friended? o.O

actually haven't been playing on-line much at all. Been playing a lot of AI matches to kill time but a lot of it was going back achivement hunting and completing single player through on brutal.
