The contingent from the Heritage were scooped from the planet, to the Empyrean, but none of them said anything, they listened. They waited, and when the pronouncement of the Cube approaching, Thibodeaux looked to Anderson.

"Under it's original Design, the Heritage was meant for close ranged knife phaser combat. With the current modifications, she's got a tougher punch. She's also got shields enough to withstand Borg firepower almost as long as a Sovereign. Get us in close, and let us take the shots."

Cumpston, for his part, had tapped his comm badge, and was informing the Heritage of the incoming Cube.

A terrible calm seemed to fall onto Captain Solheim as his senses registered the incoming threat. His shoulders even seemed to relax.

A Borg Cube.

A terrible leviathan of the darkness of space, Borg Cubes were now instantly recognizable as the harbringers of death and enslavement throughout most of the galaxy. Since the Battle of Earth, most of those who captained a ship survived by staying as far away from them as possible. Even the Captains of the mightiest known warships were all as David against Goliath, without a slingshot.

Not today.

Today an unlikely gathering of forces had happened. An unlikely cautious friendship was forged from old enemies, made by Captains who had all survived the Borg one way or another without support for years.

Of all the rest, Cretak perhaps might be the most surprised by what Captain Solheim was about to volunteer. After all, an old Earth fictional character by the name of Tony Stark was once quoted as saying that a proper weapon should only have to be fired once for others to truly appreciate its effects.

Riov Cretak had seen the effects of the Cometfall during their shared campaign against the Orions only once, when they were assaulting a Klingon Vor'cha that had been "fixed up" by some rogue members of the faction. Perhaps that's what made the weapon so terrible - its raw, vicious simplicity.

And now it would see action against a foe far more worthy of such a weapon than rogue Orions.

"The Gilgamesh is equipped with a heavy long-range weapon that could make a big dent in that cube in the opening salvo," stated Captain Solheim as he crossed his arms. "We will need shield coverage for ten seconds while it charges, however. Afterwards, we can either move to close range and assist the fleet by destroying subsystems on the Cube, or continue bombardment."

Meanwhile, Commander Inzeti had tapped her commbadge, and was rapidly relaying orders, her tone all business. In this instance, she spoke with the tone of one who had been an exceptional leader for years. "Swift, get the Gilgamesh under cloak, and moving in a defensive patrol of Nivoch IV - there's a Cube coming, and our job as task force is to destroy it," she said, her thin black eyebrows narrowing. "Have Lieutenant Vela warm up all combat systems - comets may fall today."

Alpha Quadrant
Nivoch System, Nivoch IV
USS Empyrean

He heard the human captain call to his ship and a minute later he felt an invisible power descend upon him. The sensation was not significantly different from being transported by his own ship. One moment he could feel a world beneath him all his senses aware of his surroundings and the next he was somewhere else. His head turned, his eyes darting about his surroundings and taking notice that the bridge was surprisingly empty. He had not been within a Starfleet ship since his brief visit to the USS Magellan. The configuration of the Empyrean was significantly different.

Was it really that surprising? The Empyrean was a Luna class. A state of the art ship when she was built.

His head turned and as he did so the eyes of his twin bodyguards moved as well tracking Dubois as he made his way towards what he assumed was his command chair. A moment later, and he discovered that it was as he had expected. The news went from bad to worse. A Borg cube was a formidable opponent, the type of which no single ship dared to face with anything less than honorable suicide in its heart. Still, there were more than a single ship gathered here. The question of course was if they were all willing to risk their lives, their crew and their prized ships on an attempt that even under the best of circumstances was akin to climbing a mountain without specialized gear.

When Dubois spoke his attention naturally focused on the man. He spoke honestly which was a point in his favor although his desire to make a stand here now after getting his ship back to the alpha quadrant seemed a bit foolhardy. Was he driven by hatred of the Borg or something else entirely? His head turned and he considered what he saw before him. They all hated the Borg how could they not? The Borg had come and turned the galaxy on its head, killing or assimilating untold billions. if it was not hatred then Dubois seemed willing to die in orbit over this world out of duty. Duty was a sensation that he knew well.

"I am willing to listen to this plan." He was a Romulan and that gave him a great deal of options. As Captain Dubois had noticed, he was not part of Starfleet and was not bound to its obligations. Nonetheless, he understood that the moment that was quickly descending upon them could be a crucial one. A victory regardless of its circumstances was a precious thing.

I would enjoy arriving on Bajor being part of a task force that destroyed a Cube.

Furthermore, if all the gathered vessels in the system were to form a unified task force under the command of Anderson and Kadon they needed to know what they could do. Now was as good a time as any. The haunted look in the eyes of the people that had surrounded their gathering in the field below was also fresh in his mind. They all could use a little hope. The question was if the men and women gathered in the bridge of the Empyrean were willing to provide that hope.

His eyes shifted towards Solheim and Kadon as they spoke. He expected nothing less from them. The Magistrate's reaction was predictable and he remained silent. When Captain Anderson spoke his attention naturally gravitated towards him. The human spoke sensibly and nothing that he had suggested was in need of correction. The S'harien was most effective in ranges where her disruptors were at their most destructive.

"Where the Immortal and the Riskadh will lead I will follow." He admitted indicating that the S'harien would indeed remain for the fight.

A handful of seconds later, Captain Solheim spoke and his head turned in order to look at him. His revelation of the simple and yet surprisingly effective system that formed the core of the Gilgamesh surprised him. He had expected his sense of mischief to force him to keep the capability secret until it was unveiled as a surprise in the battlefield. It had been in that manner that the S'harien had learned of the so called "comet fall" system. That he felt compelled to reveal the capability indicated his concern for the success of the upcoming encounter. His eyes settled on the human closely for a few seconds before he looked away.

Maybe he is not as simple as I had thought.

"Thank you." With that Captain Anderson turned to Captain Du Bois and spoke.

"Executive!" shouted Agan at the science console. He was young for a scientist in a senior position and somewhat excitable by Klingon standards. "Sensor traces confirm incoming Borg cube!"

On the main screen was the image from the relays piggy backing on Kadon comm bag's locator signal. "Battle alert," Arikel snapped. "All hands to action stations. Aaveroke, inform the captain that our own sensors confirm the Empyrean's readings." The Federation science vessel may have beaten the Riskadh to the punch, but the ship did possess a powerful and sophisticated sensor array and had been engaging in long range scanning. It hadn't been by a large enough margin to cause shame.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kadon hit his comm badge. "Riskadh, two to beam directly to the bridge."

The two Klingons disolve in a haze of red motes and materialized on the Riskadh's bridge. Arikel got up from the captain's chair and saluted. "The ship is yours."

Kadon didn't smile. "Station," he ordered. The Executive moved to displace Agan, sending the younger Klingon to a secondary console. Kallor settled in at one of the weapons stations.

"Zan Aaveroke, establish a protocol with the S'harien for tight beam and encrypted coms for operating under cloak." Communications and coordination between cloaked ships was always tricky, especially since the very communication signals one used posed a chance of revealing the broadcaster. There were ways of minimizing the risk, ways that the Romulans and the Klingons had been honing for nearly a century.

"Acting," replied Aaveroke. The earnest young Klingon began speaking softly and rapidly in the Rihannsu tongue.

"Kallor, load tricobalt torpedoes in both forward launchers."

"Acting," replied the Klingon weapon master.

"Engage the cloak and maneuver away from the planet, three thirty degrees mark zero at half impulse." That would take them somewhat off to the port side. "Shields at one third power." The cloak ate power like crazy and shields, as well as charged weapons, increased the chance of discovery. Actual weapons fire or shield impacts practically guaranteed it, which was why no one did it despite the tech that theoretically allowed it going back nearly a century.

Arikel began singing softly. Several members of the bridge crew took it up.

"And though the cold brittles the flesh,
The chain of duty cannot be broken,
For the chain is forged in heart's own fire
Which cold cannot extinguish.

"Yet if my line should die
It dies with its teeth in the enemy's throat,
It dies with its name on the enemy's tongue,
For just as mere life is not victory,
Mere death is not defeat;
And in the next world I shall kill the foe a thousand times,
Laughing,
Undefeated."
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

"Very well," said Captain Solheim with a nod. "Captains, I look forward to working with you," he said surety. "Ladies, gentlemen," he said, nodding politely as he tapped his commbadge. "Gilgamesh, three to beam out. Send us to the bridge."

Within moments, he and his two compatriots had vanished into three bluish-white humanoid starfields, and then into nothingness.

A few seconds later, they re-appeared on the bridge, and after gaining their bearings again from transport took their places, they strapped on their five-point seat restraints by rote. The Gilgamesh had impressive impulse engines even for a ship of its class, and Swift was known to use them to their very fullest potential during combat.

Once everyone had been seated, Captain Solheim tapped a holographic button in the three-dimensional interface that appeared floating in front of him after he was seated, and quickly skimmed reports already logged by Swift and Lieutenant Adranis about the sensor readings, now confirming the Empyrian's readings about the imminent Borg arrival via transwarp. He took a slow, deep breath, and tapped a single floating button off to the right, and heard the ship's alert whistle.

"This is Captain Solheim to all staff. Today, we embark on a suicide mission," he said with a slight smirk, pausing a moment before he continued. "But then again, expecting a half human, half Romulan crew to survive together on a ship, alone in the cold darkness of space, with no real contact with an outside authority for more than a week is also ridiculously suicidal."

As he paused, he gave a quick glance to Commander Inzeti, who gave him a small smile in return, though said nothing herself. Without missing more than a beat, he continued. "Something is happening today, and we must take advantage of it. Myself and Commander Inzeti agreed with the other Captains - a Borg Cube has noticed us gathering, and has come to investigate. If we leave now for Bajor and Deep Space Nine, we abandon our countrymen - human, Romulan, Klingon, and many others down there on Nivoch IV - to the particular charming wit and diplomacy that only a Borg Cube can do properly."

He paused again before continuing. "We've always run from Borg Cubes before, and destroyed a few Spheres in turn, this is true. This is not a chance for glory, or even a chance for accolades that will last beyond a few weeks, at best. This is about doing what you must do because it is the correct thing to do, despite being more difficult," he said, raising his chin. "We will coordinate with the other ships to destroy this Cube. I once again ask for your lives to do what must be done- in return, I will do my very best to make sure we are victorious and alive."

A heartbeat later, he added with a smirk, "I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan on seeing my off-duty time in a few hours, and I don't plan on letting a little thing like a Borg Cube spoil my evening. Let's do this by the numbers, and we'll all have dinner later."

The Gilgamesh re-cloaked, fading like a ghost into the cold background of space with barely a glimmer. It moved in silence to hover over the northern magnetic pole of Nivoch IV. Suddenly, two short, faint bursts of tachyons came from the Gilgamesh's location as the cloak "flexed" twice, a signal developed by Romulans to show other ships their position for tight-beam communication before entering a mission.

After this, the ship waited in silence, watching the solar system unblinkingly as a wraith might.

Alpha Quadrant
Nivoch System, Nivoch IV
USS Empyrean

His eyes glanced in the direction of Captain Anderson as he thanked him and he nodded his head in response. It was good to know that the human could be gracious when the time called for it. It would be his task to maintain the cohesiveness and unity of the nascent task force. His head turned as he glanced in the direction of Kadon as he hit his communication device and moments later dissolved into a haze of red motes. Captain Solheim and his escorts vanished next and suddenly it became abundantly clear that there was no need for him to remain aboard the Empyrean any longer.

"S'harien, recall us to the bridge." The message was carried out and in less than three seconds he felt a familiar wave of energy descend upon him. He closed his eyes and when he opened them once more, the familiar sight of the bridge of his Warbird greeted him. His twin reman guards hesitated only for a moment before they made their way towards the nearest lift.

Alpha Quadrant
Nivoch System, IRW S'harien

"Report?" He asked as he moved towards his chair and sat down.

"We have positive identification on the approaching transwarp conduit Riov. With your arrival, we have gone red alert. The crew has been ordered to arm itself for the possibility of repelling Borg boarding attempts. Idrakht reports that all remans are armed and in their positions. The five Romulans you requested have been transported aboard and are now in deck 16. All other personnel report to be in readiness at this time." His erei'riov responded.

"Excellent. We have been asked by Captain Anderson to coordinate with other forces capable of cloaking. The S'harien will join the main battle line alongside the other heavier elements of the assembled task force." Galan responded.

"Riov, we are recieving a tight beam communication from the Riskadh. They are attempting to establish an encrypted communication link with us in order to facilitate coordination while under cloak. The Klingon speaks excellent Rihannsu." His communication officer stated.

"Make it happen. It is in our best interest to coordinate with the Riskadh." Both ships had similar capabilities. "Do the same with the Gilgamesh."

"On it Riov. The Gilgamesh just flashed its location to us, establishing communication protocols now." the communication officer responded after being informed of the flashing by the sensor officer.

Riov Galan Cretak leaned against his command chair for a moment and allowed his eyes to take in his surroundings. The heart of the S'harien was awash with activity but few words were exchanged. He trusted his people. He trusted them to do their job and inform him when the situation warranted it. His consoles allowed him an overview of all the activity around him. His tactical console displayed the location of all friendly ships in the system, and gave him real time access to information pertaining to the approaching Borg force.

"Protocols have been established." His communication officer stated.

"Activate the cloak. After we are cloaked, go to full power on the reactor standard power distribution. Maneuver away from the planet at half impulse to the following location." His left hand reached out and touched a location in his tactical screen, the information instantly relayed to the helm.

The S'harien transitioned into the anonymity of its cloak and seemed to be swallowed up by empty space. It moved away from the planet and towards its desired position in space relative to Nivoch IV and the other ships in the squadron. Its weapons were charged and its shields while active were at a reduce rate. Its improved power core allowed for some luxuries and he took advantage of every single one. To do anything else would be foolish and wasteful.

Riov Galan Cretak watched as the tactical display highlighted the continued approach of the transwarp signature. He was keenly aware of everything that the sensor signature represented. Nonetheless, he felt that his ship and crew were ready. He hoped the other ships in the task force were up to the task.

Alpha Quadrant
Nivoch System, IRW S'harien
Deck 16

Deck 16 was awash with activity as personnel scrambled to their stations. Since the near assimilation of the S'harien, each deck had been given armories in at least two positions. The weapons were a combination of Romulan based disruptors and kinetic weapons. The Borg penchant for boarding actions even through shields at times made it paramount for as many people to be armed and ready for the eventuality of dealing with Borg drones. Romulan kinetic weapons were derivatives of the Federation based tr-116 projectile rifle. This baseline weapon had been heavily modified increasing the weight, projectile size and ammunition capacity. The Reman weapon of choice was an even heavier version, incorporating a micro-transporter and exographic targeting sensor.

Khre'eredh Sunarath picked up his assigned weapon and prepared to dash to move to his damage control team when he caught sight of movement out of the corner of his eye. His body turned and he caught sight of the five Romulan civilians that had been brought aboard from the world below peeking from the edge of the room that had been assigned to them. The civilians looked confused and disoriented. Sunarath took a deep breath and held it before he approached them.

"The S'harien is at red alert, please do not leave this room for your own safety." Sunarath stated.

"What is happening?" Asked a Romulan male. It was clear that the others deferred to him.

"A borg ship is about to enter the system. The world in which you had lived in is no longer safe." He paused for a moment. "Are you armed?"

"We are not."

"Here." Khre'eredh Sunarath reached for his waist and unbuckled projectile pistol and offered it to the leader. "Lock yourselves in. If the Borg come, use this."

"Thank you" replied the Romulan as he took the pistol and held it in his hands. It was abundantly clear that the Romulan had used weapons in the past. At this point, nearly every survivor was at least somewhat familiar with the tools of survival.

"With luck you won't need it. If you need help, there is a console inside. Use it." Sunarath offered before he glanced at the gathered group one more time before he turned and disappeared down a hallway.

The five Romulans watched for only a moment before they closed the door and locked it behind them. They moved as one to the furthest area of the room and sat down. Their leader clutched the weapon in his hands and stared at the door.

A Borg cube incoming, and all the captains jumped into action. Eoife Kirk heard Captain Anderson's orders and answered with a simple "Of course." A decisive nod to Serin, and he hit his com badge.

"Two to beam over, battlestations all." The voice was the last thing heard before Capt. Kirk and her XO beamed out.

******
A run to the battle bridge, and the activity started. "Maneuver to long range, we'll be supported by the Cardassians and protecting the Empyran. When the Borg drop out of transwarp, we'll be playing long-range support for the others," Capt. Kirk ordered, settling down in her seat. The Spector broke orbit and headed for her assigned position.

"Should we launch all fighters?"

Kirk considered for a moment, grimacing. "They can't stand against a Borg's defenses, but the torps might help. Launch the Ghosts, have them cloak. Engage on their initiative. Remaining fighters in Patrol over the planet. Keep back until they have a shot with the torps, protect the planet from any attempts to land. Weapons, get a firing solution ready. I want the first salvo away as soon as they drop from warp."

"Aye, Capt." came the replies. Full Alert sounded and pilots rushed to their vessels, getting updated orders as they reported in to the Bridge. Moments later, a mere twenty fighters launched two by two from the Spector, five of them shimmering into cloak as soon as they cleared her shield radius. The rest broke into defensive positions around the planet.

"Keep communication open with the Immortal and the other uncloaked ships. Hide their presence as long as possible. All tubes hot."

"Thibodeaux to Heritage, three to beam to the bridge," Thibodeaux spoke after tapping his comm badge. He waited only a moment, watching other commanders disappear in their particular transporter hazes, before saying, "Energize" and being beamed back to his ships bridge.

Alvin, Ryan and Holly appeared in the middle of the bridge, between the Captain's chair and the Helm and Operations Control island. Cumpston moved quickly back to his position at Tactical, while Doctor Kaiser moved to the turbolift to head back to Medical.

The crew moved methodically, not rushing, but not being slow in their responses either, as Alvin slipped into his Captain's chair. Nancie gave him a wane smile, before moving to Auxillary Operations, and taking her place.

"All hands to battle stations. We've got a incoming Cube with unknown support craft. Status reports."

"Engineering is primed, Warp Core is as good as I can make her Captain," came the gruff voice of the Klingon Engineer Joo'san.

"Shields are up and at 100% efficiency. Weapons armed, I'm having a fire control glitch in Disruptor Cannon Two and the Aft Torpedo launcher," reported Lt Commander Cumpston from Tactical.

"The disruptor is a priority. I want them fully primed and charged. We'll have to punch holes in the Cube, and the Disruptors provide out best option."

"Initiating power transfer protocols and cutting off computer access from non-essential sections."

Lights dimmed on the bridge of the Heritage, even as the reports were called out, as power was rerouted to the engines, shields and weapons systems.

"Sensors are detecting the Transwarp signiture now Captain," came the sensor officer's voice.

"Establish a secure link with the Immortal, fall into position where she directs. Our job is simple people, destroy the Cube and all it's support ships. By ourselves, we wouldn't even attempt to fight. But we've got support from a veritable fleet here, and enough firepower to make even a Cube think twice. We draw the line here, before we go to Bajor, understood?"

In space, the legs of impulse gained speed, as the Federation Starship Heritage broke orbit, falling into position near the Immortal.

Markson didn't even need to speak. A Borg signature appearing was enough to trigger his emergency transport to the bridge. He sat down, having appeared in front of his chair. "Suvuc, head down. May you not have to handle this today." He stated, before the Vulcan could object.

The XO, clearly afraid, hurried to the translift to move to the Battle Bridge. Even as he moved, the great ship began to move. "Belay previous orders. We will be attempting to open a shield hole. Prep plasma torpedos, shift shields and phaser arrays for maximum power to the Borg's likely location upon exiting the conduit. We are to prepare the way for heavy weapons."

The shipwide intercom clicked on. "We have scant moments before we are under attack. Make your peace with whatever you worship, or contemplate your accomplishments if you do not worship. We have saved many lives. Let us save more today."

"Sir. It's definitely borg, and definitely at least a Cube." One of the Orion crewmen spoke up.

"Son of a bitch." Hizir muttered under his breath. "Anything from the other ships?"

"They're sure as hell getting ready for a fight," responded Danava. "But they aren't talking to us."

"Useless fucking assholes. Alright. Ereiss, get us cloaked and get us the hell out of the way. At the very least I don't want to end up in the way of their first assault." He looked to Khoal. "Any ideas where that Borg ship is gonna be coming out?"

Khoal shook his head. "Only a rough idea at best."

"Right, work with what we can see the others doing and standard protocol for fighting the Borg. Ereiss, we cloaked?"

"Yes Captain." Came the reply from the disfigured Romulan.

"Excellent. Move us near the main force but keep your distance and keep us cloaked. Red alert and all that. We're going back to war."

The Barbarossa had shimmered from sight as it became clear a fight was going to start and moved with all the speed of a turtle and the grace of a beached whale to a location near what looked to be the main battle line.

Deep within the ship, three Ferengi brother cursed and swore as they coaxed a little more life out of the reactor. In the enormous medical bay, a vulcan sat calmly, as his assistants continued to run frantically about seeing to the last minute details of taking care of the wounded. The Orion Pirates and the Romulan Marines each betted on which would prove the more deadly this fight. It was a long standing feud between the two forces.

"The Romulans have cloaked," said Arikel. "Other than the com links to us, there are no readings."

"Zan Aaveroke," said Kadon, "Inform our Romulan allies that their cloak appears flawless. Engineering, high stealth operating mode."

"Acting," replied Aaveroke.

"Tactical display," ordered Kadon. "Helm, keep us out of weapon's range of the cube until I order otherwise." Borg sensors were too g'dayt good. Not enough to make a cloak useless, but good enough to make them a gamble.

The main monitor shifted to an overhead display of the system, showing the allied ships and the incoming Borg cube. "Now we wait."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trakka Seragal waddled and bounced down the walkway beside the main energizer. The Shelvanian didn't even reach the shoulder of most members of the Imperial Race but the squat reptilian was almost as wide as he was tall he was even more massive. Klingons used marginally stronger internal gravity than humans, but to a Shelvanian the environment was still very much low gee. At least the Klingons maintained a decent temperature and humidity. He had been on a human ship once. Outside of his cabin the ship had been like the inside of a refrigerator.

"Status?" he barked at his subordinates in Klingonaase. He knew the answers already, of course. They obediently chimed in with the all systems fully functional. He passed them with out acknowledgment. Only something out of place would have required his attention.

He approached the controls to the reactor. "Reducing power to seventy percent standard," he said. Running for stealth against the Borg was tricky. The Jem'Hadar had some pretty good cloak detection tricks as well, but there ships tended to blow up with a volley of disruptor fire. The Borg were less convivial. He activated his comm badge.

"Captain, we are proceeding under high stealth protocols. Full combat power and power transfer at your command."

"Tight-beam comm link to the S'harien has been established, Captain," Swift reported. "I'm working on links to the Riskadh and the Barbarossa now," she added, making a wry face.

"Good," replied Captain Solheim, checking the holographic tactical display in front of him, showing the activity within the system on all bands. "Make sure comm links are established with the others as well."

"Okay, Captain," replied Swift, her fingers rapidly moving through the holographic displays in front of her. She had to admit, the lack of the normal consoles in the Gilgamesh was odd at first, but she'd become at home with the floating interfaces rapidly.

Swift chuckled as she heard Lieutenant Adranis quietly curse in Romulan behind her at the tactical console as he was checking the ship's systems. She knew he still missed touching physical buttons.

As for the Gilgamesh herself, the compact escort ship hung silently and invisibly, encloaked, and above Nivoch IV's northern pole.

Alpha Quadrant
Nivoch System, Empyrean: Bridge

DuBois looked as the bridge exploded into activity around him. He nodded to Maren as the demands for information were made, the now-focused Bajoran sending out tactical and sensor data to all of the ships in the system regarding the incoming ships, as well as secure communications codes to begin establishing security protocols. The turbolift door opened once more, Commander Stone walking out of it, raising an eyebrow to the collected groups on board the bridge. He took a position at the sensor console, looking at the incoming data, quickly pulling up data on all of the assembled ships.

“Before I send you back, Captain Anderson, you should be aware of a few things. First, I’ve developed a way to infiltrate Borg communications, but I have to get relatively close. There are some other tricks I have up my sleeve, but we’ll go over that another time. I will need significant cover when I engage this system, because it can leave my ship rather defenseless. Additionally, I will need tactical data on all of the ships we have assembled here. We have files on many of them, but some are incomplete, and very few of these ships are factory standard. I have no doubt of your ability to lead, but we will need proper tactical data before we engage the Borg. Additionally, we should establish a proper communications network, for which this ship can act as a command and control node which I will patch a proper action group link to your ship,â€

Katara

Tarka had beamed back to his ship as soon as the meeting was done. He stepped onto the bridge, looking to Datav. "Cloak the ship." He ordered and looked to Gil Sorak. "Bring us away from the planet, give us some breathing room." He ordered. "Set us to battlestations." He stated, the lights dimming and going blue. Tarka pushed a button on his console at his chair.

"Attention, crew of the Katara. We will be engaging a Borg Cube shortly. Our orders are to remain at range and pummel them with our torpedoes." He said, looking around to judge his bridge crew. All ignored him, focusing on their consoles and their jobs. "Prime the tubes, preparing the reloads." He ordered. "Do your jobs and we'll survive, like we always have. That is all." He cut off the intercom and looked ot Datav. "Dal Datav, if you would be so kind, send a message to the Spector, requesting that we share targetting data once the battle is joined."

"Yes, Gul."

Spector

"Captain, messages incoming from the Empyrean and the Katara," the comm officer relayed. "Both ships wish to share sensor and targeting data."

"Set them up, Giles," Kirk answered, pouring over the tactics Commander Stone had suggested. "Make sure the link is secure, and expand the offer to all the other ships." There were ways to use the fighters here, other than a planetary screen. They could be used against the smaller Borg ships, keep them busy while the capital ships focused on the Sphere.
"Serin, have the fighters be ready for 'Mosquito duty', should they be needed."

"Indeed, Captain." Mosquitos, tiny terrors that distract and snipe away at a vessel, drawing focus away from the planet and attacking vessels. The fighter's armament of phasers and limited torpedoes made them good at the task, but far too easy to swat. "What of the novice pilots?"

Kirk grimaced. Her best pilots were in the cloaked ships and acting as wing leaders in the rest. At least five of the fighters now around the planet were newly trained pilots untested in combat. "Keep them close to cover the planet, just in case," Kirk ordered, and hopes she wasn't making a mistake. Absently she wondered if the Great James T. Kirk ever had fears like this....

Hurried preparation aboard each vessel continued apace, a minor reflection of what might well have been absolute pandemonium on the planet below. No transmissions were forthcoming, no sign of what might be transpiring on the surface of Nivoch IV. Far up in space, well beyond even the thinnest wisp of an Atmosphere, there was no means of telling what was happening below.

It could well be imagined however.

Commander Kalpov and Lt. Commander Ereshal beamed directly onto the bridge of the Argonaut, and seconds later, the old cruiser raised her venerable shields once more, cloaking the ship in a bubble of force that for seventy years had protected her against every threat deployed her way. Slowly, with the ponderous poise and dubious grace of a heavy battlewagon, the ship came about, face to the sensor reading of the Borg.

"Commander?"

"Red alert," said Kalpov without turning his eyes away from the screen. "All hands to battlestations. Prepare to engage the Borg."

Ereshal's hesitation was so brief as to be noticeable only to Kalpov. He hoped.

"Red alert," she said. And moments later the lights dimmed as the dull klaxon summoned the crew of the Argonaut to battle once more.

Kalpov did not avert his eyes, and Ereshal stepped closer to him, using the alarms as cover.

"Commander," she said softly. "We... that's a cube on the way."

"I know how to count to a hundred kilometers," he said, refusing to meet her blind gaze.

She did not flinch, he could tell out of the corner of his eye. "We've got twelve ships," she said softly. "Nobody's ever taken a cube with less than thirty."

She had said it softly enough that nobody else would hear, refused to permit her expression to change. She knew better than that. Kalpov let the comment sit for a moment, the simple numbers floating around them. He knew by inference what she was asking, and thereby what her recommendation was, all without her having to say a word of it. It was the way Aenar operated.

"Signal the Immortal," said Kalpov. "Tell them we're taking up position on their flank."

"Yes sir," said Ereshal, her voice speaking what she did not dare to. She did not even bother to point out that the sensor officers aboard the Immortal could not possibly fail to note for themselves where the Argonaut was taking up position. Eight-hundred-meter heavy cruisers were not subtle about their movements or sensor readings. Yet to send the signal to Immortal was to say something different than mutely establishing position.

Ereshal repeated his orders, or so Kalpov assumed, for he had tuned out of the rhythmic running orders of the bridge, standing before the viewscreen, staring into the blackness from whence fire and death would be emerging in very little time all things being equal...

*------------------------------------------------------*

The transwarp conduit collapsed near the edge of the Solar System.

Transwarp was a hit or miss technology, even for the Borg. When traveling at trans-galactic speeds, accuracy on the far end was somewhat dicey. In addition, fighting in Transwarp was a known recipe for disaster, and nobody, not even the Borg, ever even attempted to engage in it.

Besides, the Borg never operated as though they were in a hurry. Resistance was, after all, futile.

The signal that had been muffled at Transwarp was sharper now, more distinct, and consisted primarily of one, very large object, an object that even now was passing through the system's Oort cloud and across the orbital paths of its furthest planets. Deep within this object, energies and sensors of a sort alien to all others present within the system probed out at the darkness beyond and relayed sterile figures to the fathomless beings that inhabited its dark warrens. Layered and crenelated, the object passed by the gas giant that stood sentinel beyond the rocky planets of the system's interior. Its shape by now was clearly visible to subspace scanners and the myriad of complex observational devises that lay within the inner orbits of the system. A solid cube, faced with latticework and painted dull Grey, and about its flanks, a myriad of smaller craft that danced and wheeled about it like electrons about a nucleus.

What the intellects that directed the Cube thought, upon finding a handful of ships awaiting it within the system, interposing themselves between it and the planet it had targeted, was unknown, yet could be inferred. The Cube had, perhaps, been sent to this system untold years or months ago, as part of a plan of such intricacy and calculation as to defy the minds of men to produce. Perhaps it had been a decision on the spur of the moment, galvanized through one of several hundred million pre-computed contingencies, triggered by some invisible threshold of orbital mass or energy readings, seen from afar by an invisible detection mechanism. The result was the same. The Cube did not deviate its course or speed by as much as a milimeter, its slowly rotating facings observing the eclectic collection of ships before it, and finding them wanting.

From behind the Cube emerged two ships, smaller than the Cube, yet clearly cousins thereto. Strike cruisers in the form of perfect Spheres, who hung now within the shadow of their immense parent, reserving action and judgement behind the invulnerable juggernaut. And on the wings, held back from the Cube, yet no less visible, flew a quartet of swept-wing Exterminator frigates, encrusted as the rest with the paraphernalia of the Borg, yet of a design as alien to their fellows as the Borg were to every other thing in the Galaxy. These ships did not hide behind the Cube, but spun lazily as they danced through space, subsidiary to their enormous counterpart, but not dependent.

But the Cube ignored them all, proceeded with the stately majesty of a monster dredged from the nightmares of a child, silent, and imposing, and indifferent to all that was arrayed before it, a soldier viewing the detritus of children's toys, whose squibs and firecrackers were weighted against weapons of war. The Cube cared nothing for what these ships might purpose, or what weapons they might have, for the Cube, whether in person or through vicarious living from all the others like it, had seen it all before.

And on a hundred thousand subspace channels, broadcast for all to hear, to every ship and colony and subspace radio that existed within the entire stellar system, there came a cold, calculating, chilling voice, reading off words in a monotone that were designed to extinguish all hope.

"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg..."
Gaze upon my works, ye mighty, and despair...

Havoc: "So basically if you side against him, he summons Cthulu."
Hotfoot: "Yes, which is reasonable."

USS Heritage

"Captain, Transwarp Event Horizon opening. Detecting...Borg energy signatures"

The monotone voice of the Borg rang throughout the bridge of the Heritage

"Cut that noise off" Alvin ordered, even as he leaned forward in his chair. His ship had angled to take up a position slightly ahead of the Immortal, acting as a sort of screening element even as the other ships took position.

"Status on that Disruptor cannon Ryan."

"Still no luck on the Fire Control Protocols. We're going to have to reinstall from protected memory."

Alvin nodded, "Divert power from Disruptor 2 into the Impulse Engines. Cycle power to reinforce Forward shields."

"Aye Captain," came the reply to his orders.

"Give me numbers and types. I need to know what we're facing."

Commander Decoursey had moved to the Sensors station, already looking up the profiles, and feeding them to the ships targetting systems.

"One Cube, standard configuration. Showing two Spheres separating from it now...and four Exterminators. Sensor readings are a bit hazy, but they looked primed to bear. Alvin....no way we can win against those numbers..."

"No one's taken a Cube itself down with less than three times the number of ships we have here," Ryan spoke up from Tactical.

"Yet we're going to take on the Cube, along with it's escorts, with 12 ships. Relay to Immortal, Heritage stands ready to engage the Spheres. Attenuate the shields to known Borg Disruptor frequencies. See if we can buy ourselves some extra time."

"This is nuts Alvin..." Nancie said from the Sensor station.

"So noted, but we can't let the Borg have another planet without a fight."

"Immortal has been signaled Cap'n."

Captain Anderson and company materialized on the bridge of the Immortal. The ship was already on Red Alert and the XO had already broke for the secondary bridge. Lt. Summers and Ssszzzttt left the bridge as soon as they were solid heading for their battle posts. The Breen simply crossed his arms and leaned back on the bridge bulkhead.

"Comm, open a link to the Empyrean and start feeding them our tac data. Open channels to the non-cloaked ships... And the Katara." Captain Anderson said without unleashing the curses he wanted to. He had to hope that the Cardassian Pirate didn't screw up the whole plan.
"I want all of us who are not in the cloaked battle group to concentrate fire. Open using torpedoes and missiles only. Hold beam fire until I release. I want the NRA loaded. Tactical designate spheres as Alpha and Beta. We will fire upon Alpha until it is disabled or destroyed and shift to Beta. Tell Specter I want her fighters to engage the frigates, slow them down." Anderson gave a moment of prayer. He didn't dare risk opening a channel to the cloaked battle group, the Klingon Captain would just have to understand what to do. It was all in the hands of their crews and the almighty now.

God, remember me even if I do not remember you this day, amen.

"Sir, Borg on comm."
"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg..."
The bridge grew silent viewing the Borg squadron on the screen. They had been here before to many times to count. In Rihannsu space, in the Komerex, in orbit over Andor and systems across the Old Federation. Fear whispered across their nerves and their eyes as if pulled by a unknown force looked to their Captain. He stood in the middle of the bridge, seemingly unmovable and unimpressed. A living reminder that they had been here before and come out the other side. They had heard this all before. They would hear it again.

"Sir, you are on open comm." The comm officer whispered. Captain Anderson spoke, his voice level and calm.

"All Ships. This is Captain Anderson, USS Immortal. All ships, all tubes, Fire."
"it takes two sides to end a war but only one to start one. And those who do not have swords may still die upon them." Tolken

The Borg announcement was cut off at the beginning. It was replaced by Markson's voice. "Your heard the Immortal. All tubes, give 'em a light show, phasers, hit them hard. We do not retreat one nanometer."

Plasma torpedos loosed from the Galaxy, as the phaser arrays began to stab at the shielding of the Cube.

"Borg Cube," said Arikel. "Two Spheres guarding the flanks. Four Exterminators." As she spoke new symbols appeared on the tactical display to represent the Borg ships.

"Full impulse," ordered Kadon. "Helm, take us around the Cube and keep us out of its range. Exterminators are the targets. Bring us around on their flanks. Weapons, reload tubes with standard torpedoes. Tight beam following to the Roms and federazhon: Moving to attack the Exterminators from the flank. Gilgamesh is to join us in the attack run. S'harien to stand by and engage Borg Sphere when it moves to reinforce Exterminators. Any data about nonstandard capabilities relevant to attack plan should be relayed now."

The Riskadh had impact shields and the Gilgamesh was fast and hard to target. Both were well equipped to maul Exterminators and deal with their tractor launched projectile attacks. The Valdore was the largest and least agile ship of the cloaked group and therefore the most vulnerable to the Exterminators special weapon. Now what mattered was what secrets the Rom had been holding back.

The battle bridge feel silent, and Kirk did her best not to show any fear. "All tubes stand ready. As soon as we have range, I want fire on the spheres."
"Tactical designate spheres as Alpha and Beta. We will fire upon Alpha until it is disabled or destroyed and shift to Beta. Tell Specter I want her fighters to engage the frigates, slow them down.
"Acknowledge Immortal, get our fighters on the move per my last orders. The Ghosts know their job, no signal to give them away," Kirk ordered, glad to know she was thinking like the older Captain.
"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg..."
She really shouldn't watch old 2d films; they always have the best lines, but no one outside her ship would get the reference. "Open channel." After an odd look from the comm officer, Eoife got her wish. "To the Borg: My Name is Captain Kirk. You Killed My Enterprise. Prepare to Die. Forward Tubes, Ripple Fire."

As ordered, all forward-facing tubes on the Spector opened fire on Sphere Alpha, followed by a second round as quickly as the tubes could be loaded, then a third. The glowing balls of light swept across the solar system with deadly intent, three layers deep and more waves on the way.

Unseen by the Borg or their fellow ships, the bridge crew of the Spector were grinning, although Serin simply raised an eyebrow. "Princess Bride. Indeed. I do not think the Borg will comprehend the humor."

"I dont' think the Klingon or Romulans will either, but it made me feel good," Eoife replied, her grin feral as she saw the next volley of torpedos fire. "Continue firing, we'll worry about replicating more later."

"Borg contacts entering realspace now," reported Swift, a small trace of a smile on her face. "Reading one Cube, two additional Spheres, and four Exterminator frigates, all on same vector. Updating telemetry now," she reported. "They sent us the standard Borg hail, and I sent them a video of a Borg Cube exploding over and over again."

"The Riskadh has sent us telemetry data and targeting data. According to the data, they're asking us to watch their wings," reported Lieutenant Adranis.

"Other ships reporting, and battle chatter is beginning. The advance with the non-cloaked units has begun," reported Lieutenant Commander Vela.

At this, Captain Solheim smiled grimly. "Very fitting, I'd say. Vela, send the Riskadh the details of the Cometfall, and the loss of our ablative armor. Swift, take us in for the first attack run alongside the Riskhadh. Adranis, drop the cloak halfway to target, and raise shields. Prioritize the Exterminator frigates first."

All officers acknowledged their orders with quiet competence, as the bridge of the Gilgamesh was filled with the usual quiet wartime cacophony.

Despite still being cloaked, the Gilgamesh seemed to almost leap from its hiding place from above the northern magnetic pole of Nivoch IV, and toward the Borg ships travelling inexorably toward them.

Bridge of the USS Heritage

"We've received targetting information from the Immortal. Spheres designate Alpha and Beta."

"Lock Target on Alpha, Torpedo Pattern Gamma-Zulu. Standard spread. Fire at will Ryan. Helm, bring us to within extreme phaser range of Sphere Alpha. Once in range, Phasers at your discretion Ryan, don't use the Disruptor cannons yet."

-------------

The Heritage's Impulse Engines flared as she pulled ahead into battle. Her sensors locked onto the first Sphere, feeding the location into the ship's targeting computers. In sequence, two spheres of glowing reddish-white light ejected from the forward torpedo launcher of the ship, streaking toward the Sphere designate Alpha.

The torpedo clusters passed the threshold of the ship's "safe" distance, and seperated, the larger ball of light seperating into three smaller ones. Each programed with their target, and following in a eliptical arc, three streaking to come from below, and three from above, yet both programmed to meet in the forward face of the sphere.

After a few precious moments, another torpedo volley was launched, this one heading at a quicker pace, and aimed directly for the Sphere, no curved flight paths this time.

Once the ship had reached it's extreme energy weapon range, twin bolts of Phaser energy launched from two of the upper arrays to strike the foe.

The order from Anderson came through loud and clear, unfortunately not on the coded channels the Empyrean had provided, but Anderson must have his reasons. “Fire all forward torpedoes at the Sphere, ready the beams, and keep that tactical data flowing! I don’t want any surprises!â€
