#1 Star Trek Online!

Post by Jason_Firewalker »

Alright so I have been playing the past few weeks and I am a Captain 4 on my main and my second character is a LtCom 5. I am loving the new additions for Season 2: Ancient Enemies. I am whole heartedly giving this game a 9.5 out of 10 and I have to say that I wish that there were some other LA folks on STO so that we could fly together.

I have a Captain 7 and RA 5 currently. 9.5, hardly, but I haven't tried the new stuff yet. I'm willing to give it a shot sometime, but I doubt I'll renew my sub what with The Old Republic on the way.

After doing more reading on the Old Republic, I'm less sure that I'd dig it. So, I gave STO a shot. So far, not bad - I bought a 3 month subscription and 3500 cryptic points, which are so far unspent.

Yes, I'm still rocking the Miranda with my first captain, a Tactical type alien captain. I gave him all starship-scale abilities that have to do with combat.

As the Collector's Edition was only $7 from Amazon and I had a $35 Amazon gift card, I went ahead and bought it, then DLed the demo to make sure (since I could cancel the order any time before shipping if there was an issue). There wasn't and I am now impatient for delivery, which will be another freaking week (I had the bad sense to order an item that wasn't immediately in stock, though they got it in stock earlier than expected - on the other hand, that item is the DVD of the live action Hogfather, which is awesome....).

I have to say that as my second MMO experience (the first being WoW obviously) I find STO to be decent. A bit busy in ground combat situations, but the space stuff is really good. The only thing I dislike on that front is that they don't let you perform loops like in Bridge Commander.

Honestly, even with being as new to I am to MMO's, STO got old for me pretty fast. It was enjoyable to me for about a month, and after that it was only fun playing with friends in a group. When I got to month three, I had enough, cancelled my STO account, and got into LotrO.

I admit that I dig the starship combat of STO, but after a while, that was the only fun thing about the game for me.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Well, I'll only have it for a month unless I have employment with sufficient wages to pay for it. As it is, I know the game's end-game content is weak, so I'll probably use it as a holdover initially until I build up the cash to pick up WotLK and Cata and restart WoW.

Been a year since this thread saw use.......

time to necro it up a bit......

So today marks the 2yr anniversary of STO, and to celebrate, the Federation and Klingon Empire are launching new ships

For the Klingon Empire, the Bortas-Class starship (I got no pictures of that), and for the Federation players, you get to witness the launch of the newest Federation Flagship, the Odyssey-Class USS Enterprise N.C.C.-1701-F:

Yep, this is apparently, the new Canon-Approved starship Enterprise.

There was a thread about this on SDN, where someone from there (Fuzzy_modem IIRC) entered into a competition STO was hosting to design the new Enterprise. Only it wasn't a real Competition.

Fuzzy's concept was different while still holding true to the classic design elements (like having a saucer section, stardrive section, and two nacelles). His was also very popular too - at one point motherfucking Andrew Probert was giving him feedback! - but he didn't win the 'prize' because the game was rigged.

They went with a bullshit design that was basically an unholy marriage between the Sovereign and the Intrepid, pairing one of my favourite ship designs with one of the ones I hate the most.

God that ship design is fugly as hell. Why, oh why would someone do this? The ship looks like it has a damn beer belly! Usually I don't care as long as it's functional but this... Ugh.

Personally I call it the Soverberth because of that stupid dual neck thing. Granted in-game it doesn't look as bad but I still hate the damn gap. I mean seriously, there's no good reason for it that I can begin to think of and this is a ship design in time of war so you'd think they'd want it solid as possible, not with two clearly obvious weakpoints to take aim at.

Though apparently it's going to have Saucer Seperation according to some concept art released, which again I ask what's the point but eh, at least if they follow through on that the neck gap makes...a little more sense? Maybe. Bleh.

Anyway, to be honest, I wasn't that big a fan of FM's design, really. The nacelles being all pushed up like that never sat well with me, honestly. It just made it awkward, moreso with that hanger section just sticking out there. There was another design that I kinda like more, even if it did look like a beefier Sovvie-with-a-neck rather than anything really new.

[hr]
So anyway, in case anyone was unaware, STO is now free to play so if you were curious before but leery of spending money on it, now you can give it a whirl.

It was a nice design that just needed refinement. About the only thing I was unhappy about was the rear of the vessel and how the nacelles were structured to the hull. But it was still a lot better than the final result.

Also a mate and I went to town in this game. We played the first mission, save the azura. It rocked.

I actually kinda sorta downloaded it to play yesterday, first time since the Beta.

They refined playstyle a lot since then. I kinda like the way they implemented "shooter" mode for ground combat.

Doubt I'll be able to play much though, what with work (and the connection at work being to high latency to suppport MMOG playing)

So....

Been playing his when I'm at home, got myself to Captain, and have a Sao Paulo-class Escort (I wanted the Quad Phaser Cannons...) and a Galaxy Class Cruiser (as a Tactical Officer)

At this point, I've pretty much played very similar with all my ships, I never really took the time to finangle how they SHOULD be fought with....

All I have to say is..Damn. I've been playing wrong this entire time.

Cruisers are totally meant to use Beam Broadsides, while Escorts should be front and center "fuck you"s with Cannons and Torpedoes.

Once I figured this out, combat goes much more smoothly here on in. I even managed to help take out a Unimatrix Ship in a Borg invasion yesterday (the first time I've ever done so), and was rather happy with the results.

Also - Point Defense System Terminal is fucking broken. Fly into a patch of escorts or frigates as a Cruiser, hit "Worf Kill" and "Point Defense System" and watch all the other ships turn into expanding balls of ionized gases......

It's a shame that ME3 is just around the corner and that I've been replaying ME2 for the last week. Because I seriously want to play this game with a bunch of guys.

I'm having more fun with STO's combat in space, to be honest.

Besides, it IS free to play.

Ironically enough, ramming speed is almost always more useful as an escape skill due to its low-hull threshold. Use Evasive Maneuvers to get in attack range, get shitkicked until your hull is low enough to trigger Ramming Speed, then use that to escape and try not to sideswipe any Borg ships on your way to safety. Alternately, beat your face into a tactical cube when you're about to die.

For me it's Full Impulse into battle, hit the target subsystem shields, torp spread, high yield torp, EPS power transfer 3, slow down to 3/4 impulse and just fire until it dies.
