New Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s (D) first executive order will expand state anti-discrimination laws to include state transgender employees, Think Progress reported on Monday.
Executive Order Number 1 will protect LGBT state employees from employment discrimination, and add gender identity to sexual orientation as a protected class. The order states, “The foundational tenet of this Executive Order is premised upon a steadfast commitment to foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, and mutual respect for all Virginians.”
As the Washington Blade noted, McAuliffe’s order fulfills a promise he made repeatedly during his successful campaign against Ken Cuccinelli.
CNN reported that McAuliffe also signed an order prohibiting himself, members of his administration and their families from receiving gifts worth more than $100, and establishing a three-person commission to enforce the rule.
His predecessor, Bob McDonnell (R), was criticized and faced criminal charges over a series of donations from dietary supplement company founder Johnnie Williams Sr., including a $6,500 Rolex watch, a $15,000 New York City shopping spree for his wife and allegedly paying for vacations for McDonnell’s family.
“Virginians have placed great trust in their elected officials and expect transparency and decision-making that avoids improper conflicts,” McAuliffe was quoted as saying. “This Executive Order will assure citizens of the Commonwealth that members of my Administration will be held to the highest of ethical standards.”
McCauliffe was sworn into office on Saturday.
