I hit upon the idea of wanting to have a proper reference library for all basic subjects of knowledge - maths of various sorts, science of various sorts, history, and the like. So, I'd like to hear your recommendations for books to properly create a reference part of my library.

Ahhh... Okay.
Gonna stick with history books/political science books here I think. Alot of them you could likely get on Kindle for free, just FYI.
Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith.
The Chrysanthemum and the Sword, Benedict.
The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitialism, Max Weber (take this with a bit of salt, but the book is hugely important for it's effects in anthropology, socology, economics and political science).
God's Chinese Son, Jon D Spence. Trust me on this one.
Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Dividing the Spoils, Waterfield.
Sweetness and Power, the place of sugar in the modern world, Sidney W Mintz. You wouldn't guess it but you walk away with a much greater and deeper knowledge of the British Empire here.
Yeah I think that'll do for now.
