His augmetic eye scanned the crowd, filing details, looking for aberrations, processing the data for his cogitator-enhanced brain.

Pater's mind floated above the crowd, the shifting panels reforming into a vaguely humanoid shape. Invisible fire lashed out towards the huddled mass, and is if to prove the Empyrean did not conform to logic or physics, broke into small, dancing strands of electricity that bounded from one psyche to the next, searching for guilt or complicity.

At first nothing was to be found, but then, from below the streets, under feet of concrete, ferrocrete and soil, was... another, alien, prescence, and a sharp but unfocussed as if casual, rebuff of the mental probe.

Pater's body visibly stiffened, and his mental avatar reshaped itself into a creature of spikes and thorns, driving towards the source of the parry.

Gix blinked as a light was shown in his eye. One of Gird's mechadendrites. "Inquisitor!" He was being shaken. "No concussion, just stunned," Gird reported. "The Rhino flipped. Psi scanner registering subterranean signals."
"Get me out of this harness," the inquisitor ordered. He could feel Pater's projected self nearby. "Status?"
"You got the worst boss," was Hethor's reply as the big man slashed through the restraint harness with a combat knife.
Gix touched the control on his conversion field. "Lydia, hold and give psychic coverage with Iriza." Hethor was already moving, sliding the Rhino's door open for his master. "The rest of you hang back with Lydia. Prepare to throw your weight behind me if I call for it. Otherwise, shield the others."
The inquisitor stepped out into the street. He shaped the warp around him, imprinting it with his anger, relentless will, and malice. The jagged tooth warp eel was sent to swim after the alien mind-taste and rend and tear. It wasn't to most potent warp entity Gix could devise, but in this situation it would serve quite well.

Whatever the alien entity was, it was both fast and skilled.
Fast, physically, it was already moving, and doing so quite adroitly, but also fast psycically. As Pater drove towards it, it seemed to move, not taking place in a simple three dimensional space, but receeding while standing still. The retroceded entity snapped into existance as though falling from a stationary point behind Pater, and unleashed an assault of shocking ferocity.
There were many things that couldn't easily be described or comprehended in psychic combat, but this wasn't one of them, a thrust of willpower, like a rapier point, drove into the avatar, the wedgelike 'sword' was flickering with energies visible, to those with the sight of things in the warp at least, as strange draining darkness.

Gix reached out to shred and and disrupt the psychic thrust. His power and skill had grown tremendously over the decades. Fifty years ago he would have been out of his element in this fight, not today.

The xenos prescence, with a distinct taste to it that could perhaps be recognised, splintered and fractured. It faltered, finding itself outnumbered and it was worried - it was also outclassed.
Sister Tliuyath, the injured Soroitas, twitched suddenly on the floor. Then she flew across it, rasing a small cloud of dust as she slammed into Gix and toppled with him into the crater. A moment after, seveal almost unnoticable impacts followed as pins flew from half a dozen krak and frag grenades she carried...

If there was one inquisitor on Ophelia that would be the worst choice to play telekinetic grenade tricks with, it was Jolan Gix. The grenades flew high into the air to detonate well away from the inquisitor and his retinue, although several bystanders recieved serious shrapnel injuries. Jolan's warp eel swarm through the immaterium towards the alien mind, fangs flashing.
A surge of will threw the sororitas off Gix. The inquisitor descended into the crater, warded by his own telekinetic shields and the conversion field. Murder was in his eyes.

The glass panels rearranged themselves, acting as an ablative shield against the point. Pater soaked up the damage, his physical body twitching slightly. The blue fire quenched itself, and the glass panels melted and reformed into a liquid that seemed to seep into the ground, aiming to smother the presence.

The sewers beneath were, unsurprisingly, rank and filled with waste. One way led in the general direction of the alien.

Pater's consciousness outstripped Gix's physical body by an order of magnitude, sheer force of will forming a mental shockwave to batter the alien into submission. His liquid avatar seemed to form a wave, too vast and amorphous to be punctured at any one point.

Even the mightiest wave could break against a rock, and this alien withstood the attack with tremendous skill as it sprinted, faster than any mere human could manage, through the world's basements and sewers.

Pater's mental wave crashed against the alien's psyche, instantly transforming and becoming adhesive, searching for a crack in the alien's defenses.

Some things could be told about the alien. It was one of the race the Imperium called Eldar, and it was female. She had a clarity of purpouse that almost matched the yonger Prius' but hers was of a stranger, less defined aim.

Eldar! Pater had faced the fickle race as both an ally and an enemy over the decades, and knew the basics of their mental layout, their strengths and weaknesses. As a whole, Eldar mindframes tended to be strong but brittle. If he could break her in one place, the rest would follow.
Metaphors and the human language in general utterly failed to provide an adequate explanation for the ethereal battle, but the closest analogy would be of pincers; Pater gripped on to the Alien's psyche, taking most of the mental weight off the act of pursuit and allowing him to redirect his energies for an attack. He massed his will into a psychic spear and drove it at the alien's mental bubble.

The warlock paused in a basement, rocking back and forth, she felt the opressive weight of the mon-keigh's mind closing upon her own like a vice, and drove back against the force...
Asabaè, having finally extracted herself from the rhino containing Jaenta's minions, screamed in pain, blood flecking her lips as she did her job, the witching equivalent of an imperial guard conscript squad. Even though she was able to defend herself moderately well, she was nothing to Gix or the alien.
Discovering the unorthodox but typically mon-keigh defence, Arquellia changed tactic, sinking to her knees, left hand trembling spasmodically... It was difficult and required concentration, and would doubtless only provide a brief respite. She knew she could handle one of the two greater human psykers, but not both at once...
She turned her attacker aside onto the one who had opened its mind to absorb her attack.

Pater felt momentarily disoriented as his mental avatar was thrown like a truculent horse's rider, smashing into the unsuspecting psyker.
It was about then that Gix's warp eel caught up with the Eldar.

The warlock continued battling against the other opponent, blood streaming like tears from her eyes as her head suffered damage; she was almost to the fall back point, almost to the exit from this mistake...
Asabaè writhed madly on the floor, twisting into tendon-snapping poses as she whithered under Pater's assault.
Pulling herself along the ground, Arquellia pressed her hand to the wraith-gate generator, blue portal flaring, and rolled herself inside. To both Gix and Pater, in doing so she seemed to vanish completely.

With Gix and Novum engaged with the Eldar, Prius had simply detached a small sliver of consciousness to piggyback on their trails while maintaining the bulk of his consciousness in the near-realm around the Saint.
Eldar.
The Litany of Hatred for the Xenos rolled in the back of his mind as he assumed command of the defensive perimeter, preparing the transit of the Saint and his fellow inquisitors to a new transport, so they could get moving again.

Pater's eyes snapped open and he shot to his feet, wiping blood from his mouth. The Eldar had been a fierce opponent, but they'd almost had her.

"So, what was that about?" Lena asked as the penitent witch paused to retch, narrowly avoiding Gix's feet. There was, to be fair, no immediate danger to anyone but the Sororitas woman struggling and twitching at the bottom of the crater.

"Eldar." Pater said, rolling his tongue inside his mouth and tasting copper. Joritu waved her diagnosic-equipment laden hands over him and clucked disapprovingly.
"A strong one." He said, perhaps redundantly. "We almost had her, but she vanished. Probably a wraithgate."

"A basement." Pater answered quickly. Suspicious he might have been, he also knew when to answer his lesser's questions without hesitation.
"Leading on from the sewage systems." Pater went on to describe the winding route he'd pursued the Xenos through.
