#1 Jack Thompson disvowed

Post by frigidmagi »

Welcome to the Game
Florida attorney and anti-videogame campaigner Jack Thompson has come under fire from America's National Institute on Media and the Family for claiming to have the support of the group in his regular open letters.

The decision of the group to distance itself from the attorney and his headline-grabbing tactics comes despite the fact that like Thompson, the institute is a vocal critic of games such as Manhunt and 25 to Life for their violent content.

The institute's founder, Dr David Walsh, wrote an open letter to Thompson, a copy of which was obtained by US website Game Politics. The letter was also sent to the likes of senator Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates and Doug Lowenstein of the ESA - the same Doug Lowenstein whom Thompson has previously compared to Hitler.

It begins with Dr Walsh explaining that he established the institute ten years ago "to engage in research and education about the effects of media on children's health and development." Walsh writes that one of the areas of most concern to the institute is the effects of violent media.

"I know that you share that common concern and I am well aware that you have frequently cited me and our organisation as a source of scientific information," Walsh continues.

"However, over the past few months, I and members of my board have a growing concern that your use of our name, without our permission, has had a negative influence as we try to educate the public on this important issue.

"Your commentary has included extreme hyperbole and your tactics have included personally attacking individuals for whom I have a great deal of respect... Some of the people that you have publicly criticised are not only people of integrity, but are people who have worked to improve the lives of children."

Walsh goes on to note that Thompson has been using his name in correspondence even though they have no formal relationship, creating the impression "That we condone these tactics. We do not.

"The result is that our position and reputation as a research based, non-partisan, solution-focused organisation has been jeopardised.

"Consequently, I ask that you cease using the institute's or my name in any way that would give the impression that we support your efforts." Walsh also requests that Thompson remove the link to the institute's website from his own site.

Walsh's letter comes just days after Thompson issued an open letter to the videogames industry in which he outlined his idea for a game where the CEO of fictional company Take This, Paula Eibel, is murdered along with her husband and children. Should any developer agree to make the game, Thompson will donate $10,000 to the charity of choice of Paul Eibeler, the CEO of Take Two.

Mike Krahulik, the artist behind popular gaming culture comic Penny-Arcade and a founder of the hugely successful Child's Play charity, contacted Thompson after he made this offer to point out that Child's Play has raised over half a million dollars for children's hospitals around the USA since its inception.

Commenting on Penny-Arcade.com, Krahulik reports that Thompson proceeded to call him directly - keen, no doubt, to congratulate such a successful fellow organiser of videogaming-related charity efforts.

Or perhaps not. "Jack actually just called and screamed at me for a couple minutes," Krahulik said. "He said if I email him again I will 'regret it'. What a violent man."
For those of of us that don't generally bother themselves over video game news, Jack Thompson, a Florida based lawyer made the "chanledge" to the video game industry. Make his video game, where you play a man hunting down and killing employees of the video game industry along with their families and he'll denoate 10,000 dollars to their favority charity. Don't and he'll call you naughty names and make vague legal threats. He even went so far has to title it a "Modest Video Game Prospal."

The whole thing is ridiculous, on so many levels. I'm going to assume he's trying to be some kind of modern Jonathan Swift, seeing as how he used the title of a satirical letter Swift wrote. Except, he forgot the satire. What's worse, is all the things in the game are basically veiled threats to actual people, or at least his sick fantasy. "Paula Ebil" of "Take This", yeah, you're not fooling anybody, Jack.
And on top of all that, $10 grand is nothing, in terms of video game costs. GTA's budget is in the millions, I would guess. Moreover, this $10 grand isn't going to the company who would make this shitty game, its going to a charity, theoretically unrelated to them, and they lose heaps of money for making this ridiculously terrible failure of a game.
The whole thing is a stunt by Thompson: he knows nobody will make his stupid idea into a game. This way, he can say A: "See? the video game companies are afraid if they make this game, they'll be the targets of violence" and B: "See? they're depriving this charity of $10,000, those selfish bastards."

I'll concede, video games probably do have an effect on people, but to try to pin the entire motivation and cause of a crime on a game is silly. He also claims that these games train kids to kill, and said some gang leaders use GTA to teach younger gang member to hijack cars. Yes, simulators can be used to teach, I understand this. Now, I've never stolen, but I can theorize it is much more to it than simply standing nearthe car and pressing 'triangle.'
By this logic (or lack therof), I should be an expert swordsman, uncanny gymnast, ace pilot, pro skateboarder, oh and raving psychopath. I can assure you I'm none of these things.
If his crusades was simply to enforce the game ratings, or even reform them, that might be okay, but a lot of his campaign is painting game companies as evil masterminds, and games as the root cause of all violence today.
Yes, stores should enforce rating restrictions, no question. However, parents have a responsiblity to know what they children are doing, what they're interested in, what they are playing. Who buys them the game systems? How many 7 year olds have 50 bucks lying around?
Parents have to take an active role in their children's lives. That's why you fucking have kids! If you're not going to bother actually raising them, you might as well have gotten a rotweiler instead.

Censorship is not the answer.

I don't know if this counts as a double post, but there are fun, exciting new updates!

Some game modders created Jack Thompson's brilliant game. Naturally, he is not going to donate the $10,000 he promised, since the whole thing was 'a satire.' Here is and article about it.
Also, Thompson proves he is completely effing nuts in these emails exchanged with VG Cats creator, Scott Ramsoomair

To be fair, I got this info and these links from Penny Arcade, which I figure most of you read anyway. The've also got clever and thoughtful insight to the situation. And the comic is usually pretty good too.

And to quote Tycho himself:
You Lose

It was only a matter of time until a mod team took Jack Thompson's disgusting revenge fantasy and made it flesh - and, just as I suggested, it was deemed insufficient.

Thompson now claims that his repellent suggestion was "satire," and we must conclude that his financial offer was also satire, some new breed of satire apparently that I'm sure is just hilarious to people in need.

You know what, Jack? We're going to be the men you're not. You said that your insulting, illusory ten thousand dollars would go to the charity of Paul Eibler's choice. We've got a good guess that he'd direct your nonexistant largesse toward The Entertainment Software Association Foundation, a body that has raised over six point seven million dollars over the last eight years. We've just made the donation you never would, and never meant to. Ten thousand dollars' worth. And we made it in your name.

Update: Jacky boy has attempted to enlist the SPD to shut down Penny Arcade, claiming criminal harrassment.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/gamepo ... 10152.html
Will Seattle's Finest Be Raiding Penny Arcade?

The simmering controversy over anti-game crusader Jack Thompson's controversial $10,000 donation offer took an ugly turn this morning. The Miami attorney has tried to enlist the efforts of the Seattle Police Department in a dust-up with gamer website Penny Arcade.

In a letter faxed to Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske (left), Thompson says, in part, "A Seattle business by the name of Penny Arcade... employs certain personnel who have decided to commence and orchestrate criminal harassment of me by various means... This company has done this because I dared to go on CBS's 60 Minutes in March and again in July to explain a wrongful death lawsuit I have brought on behalf of two police officers and a police dispatcher in Fayette, Alabama, who were shot in the head and killed by Devin Moore who obsessively trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill them."

"As you may know, this incredibly violent Rockstar Games product is actually a 'cop-killing' murder simulator. There are a bunch of computer geeks out there who think that the video game industry has a constitutional right to paint a bullseye on your back and on your officers' backs... That is what this criminal harassment of me by Penny Arcade is all about. They're even selling an 'I Hate Jack Thompson' t-shirt, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. These idiots have been so careless as to post on their www.pennyarcade.com web site what they are doing regarding the harassment of me."

"I look forward to working with your fine Police Department to shut this little extortion factory down and/or arrest some of its employees."

This latest controversy is part and parcel to a complicated dispute over Thompson's bizarre offer to donate $10K to charity provided that a developer create and distribute a violent game of Thompson's specification in which the victims were industry executives and their families.

GP is seeking comment from the folks at Penny Arcade, but given the East Coast-West Coast time differential, it's likely they haven't even rolled into Starbucks yet. We'll add anything we hear from them. We'll also add any comment we are able to get from SPD, although Thompson's complaint wouldn't seem likely to be high on their priority list. And anyway, their investigation will surely be hindered by the fact that Thompson's letter provides the wrong URL for Penny Arcade.

By the way, the Penny Arcade case is not the first time the volatile attorney has tried to sic the gendarmes on a game site.

Can you say "chilling effect?"

This fax seems to be news to the SPD. It says it hasn't recieved any such thing. Everyone who's surprised that Thompson is a liar raise their hand.

If you saw some of the covers that were unintentionally-hilarious by our standards, you might excuse Wertham for being a stupid cunt. Or at the very least understand why he thought what he thought.

The paralells are there, man! Seriously. In his book, Seduction of the Innocent, he claimed comics encourage homosexuality. Batman, has (or had) no female suitors, he kept mainly male company, including a young boy under his care. He also had issue with the female villians because they portrayed women as evil, dangerous etc. His objection did not due to feminist reasons, of course, but because these female super-villians, he beleived would make boys think all women were like that, and be frightened of them, thus they would avoid women and become homosexuals.
Someday, I think I might read that entire book, just for shits and giggles.

different kinds of lunatics, too.

no, really, you're right, but the set-up was there, I had to take it.
of course, I would never, ever put Jack Thompson and Martin Luther King Jr in the same category.

No, not really. There have been some that do have a genuine point to them and are also honest and decent. It's just those tend not to get anywhere near the milage that the "moral panic" crowds get.
