"Can she do it?" Melanie asked flatly. She wasn't going to hide it: if he had any apprehensions about it, she wanted Sherry the fuck away from anything that could cause damage. Especially damage to Melanie's own men.

"Yeah, she can," he said. "Otherwise I would've moved Decimus over to take over."

But that was pretty much it. The barrel of leadership was pretty much scraped out. They'd taken a real beating of late.

"As long as you trust her," Melanie said quietly. "That's all I needed to hear."

There was a long, very uncomfortable pause.

And then the dog crashed into the room with all the stealth and grace that Petro had used in parking the truck.

"Bjorn, STOP!" Jared shouted, being tugged haplessly along the leash the husky towed.

"'Course I did," the boy said with a strange look on his face. "Why would I suddenly stop?" He paused for a moment, trying to pick up on Wendigo Reaper's thoughts.

"He's down in the sick rooms with Uncle Punt and Miss Gwendolyn," he said with a nod.

Jesus fuck. He grabbed his shotgun. While Reaper might've proven himself to be reliable as a fighter in the field, trusting him around wounded was a whole 'nother matter altogether.

"I'll be back later," he promised. "Love both of you."

And with that, he was out the door.

He arrived in the infirmary, doing his best to look unconcerned and casual. No, no fear that a fucking zombie was loose in amidst the wounded, not at all.

Wendigo remained in the corner and out of the way, occassionally craning he neck to observe medical treatment being administered.

During the time she'd been feeling better--and she had, since the antibiotics and Mike's Necrotech cocktail--Gwen had been quickly established as the terror of the infirmary. Everyone who wasn't busy was chattered up, and the strange man in the corner was no exception.

She yawned, wiped at her eyes.

"Hey," she said, "I know you."

Wasn't quite sure from where, however, due to how she'd been at the time.

She sat up a bit too quickly, side burning, and let out a bit of a gasp that she stifled as best she could.

"I wanted to see you again," she said. "To thank you."

As though still in the world of socials and elections, she offered her hand.

"You shouldn't go out without wearing gloves," she said with a nod, "I'd have probably lost some fingers if I had."

She lifted her other hand and wiggled said fingers with a bright smile, as though to congratulate herself.

"I'm glad you came back," she said, "it's not safe for anyone if they're alone."

She didn't seem to really understand what he meant by that as she cocked her head to the side, blinked a few times.

She then reached for the bottle of water at her bedside table and took a long drink.

"Can't wait to get out of here and help you guys," she said brightly.

At those words Gwendolyn's proverbial feathers ruffled. She sat up straight, puffed out her chest.

... But she couldn't think of something really super-inspirational to say, so she simply let out an indignant 'hmph!'

Really, it was cute. In a pathetic and useless kind of way.

He smiled, an expression which wasn't completely ghastly. "Rest," Wendigo said. In a lower tone of voice he spoke to himself. "Hmmm. Empathy. Affection. Emotions recovered. I am healing. Or changing."
