Sherry saw the retreat.

This was their only chance.

This was what she had to do.

"If there's anyone still out there, I'm so fucking sorry," she said, then transmitted:

"Fuck it, blow her NOW."

She aimed her pistol and blew the barrel within her sights, then looked away as her vision went white.

The blast knocked Reaper back and then he stumbled forward, overbalanced, and fell to the street.

He'd just barely slid over the side when the bombs started detonating. Fire washed the streets, the concussive wave hammering down on those still standing. He was knocked forward onto his face, teeth hammering into his upper as pure hellacious noise pounded his eardrums.

The blasts tore through the retreating horde, many of home had managed to reach cover.

Many, but far from all.

However, even if they had reached cover, they were still stunned by the blast just like their human counterparts.

Except for the Irregulars.

They'd come prepared with ear plugs and the whole fucking shebang.

"Irregulars, go for it!"

Sherry leapt from her hiding place and slid her machete cleanly through the necks of two zombies from behind. She hacked and slashed wildly, paying no mind as to where her strikes were hitting as long as they brought the rotters down.

He rolled to his feet, ears ringing. First thing he noticed was no Reaper. Lurching forward, he looked over the edge and spotted him on the ground.

Fuck.

He started back down the line. Frank was saying something in his ear, but he couldn't quite hear him.

The Irregulars struck with vicious precision, mowing into the zombies that had taken shelter against the buildings. They didn't go inside; they'd lose the advantage.

Very few zombies had escaped incineration after the blast, and those that had were smouldering and writhing on the ground.

Sherry found one, shaking in the throes of death, and decapitated it with a snarl.

Wendigo freed the axe from his back. He could fight. The zombies were in worse shape. He went to work.

He hit ground next to Reaper, pulling out his hatchet.

"We didn't get the leaders!" he shouted.

"What?" Frank asked.

"Rally at the Mengher," he ordered. "We're gonna have to dig them out."

The Irregulars continued their butchery for a few more moments, then dissolved like ashes on the wind, headed for the regrouping point.

Marley radioed in: "Dozer here, all of mine accounted for. Get your asses over here."

Reaper trailed the Irregulars. No one had bothered to explain the details of the plan to him, but he knew that there would be opportunities to kill where they went. They would make a lot of meat.

The hordes had finished their retreat, and the ground was littered with twitching body parts from the ones that had been too slow. Petro collected a fresh weapon from a downed militiaman, checked the load, and looked at his people. Blood had frozen to his chin, zombie guts and viscera splattered all over his winter gear.

"We got most of the grunts. Dozer, get the parts loaded and back to the trenches. The rest of you, we're going in to get the leaders."

He hefted the shotgun, looking over at Sherry. "Take us in, Punkass."

Marley nodded, whistled to his men to get their asses in gear as they removed trash bags from their packs.

Sherry looked to Petro, then to Reaper. They seemed to be the two elite of the operation, along with herself of course.

"We'll climb the fire escapes, go down from the top. What we don't kill will be driven out into the streets."

She conferenced briefly with Lenny and Harv, both of which would be leading similar units to take out the zombies that escaped.

Reaching the top floor was easy. The window was still intact. He kicked it in and cleared the glass away before entering. He paused for a moment, listening for movement.
