HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A landmark decision by the Supreme Court regarding eminent domain paves the way for local government to take your home or business to make way for private development -- and that's exactly what's happening to a business owner in downtown Hollywood.

For 35 years, the Mach family has been cutting nails and doing nails in their building on the corner of Harrison Street and 19th Avenue.

George Mach and his wife Kaitlin purchased the building in 1971. Their son says the couple not only ran the business, they raised their family there.

David Mach said, "I worked here when I was a kid. I worked the register and met all the old customers."

He says his folks rejected several requests to sell the building over the years, but the latest offer is one the family can't refuse. The city of Hollywood is moving to seize the building through eminent domain, which allows governments to take private property for public use. The city plans to put a $100 million condominium on the site.

Property rights attorney Charlie Forman says he is worried about how city leaders will interpret the Supreme Court's decision

Forman said, "As long as they're doing something good for the community it's OK to take people's property."

Daniel Abbot, the city of Hollywood's attorney, says city leaders do sympathize with the Mach family.

Abbot said, "They're long time residents and we're working with them, but at the end of the day, that area has been targeted for restoration and redevelopment and we need to get to that point somehow."

George Mach lost a long battle with leukemia six weeks ago.

His son says the family is more committed than ever to save their store.

Just a few quotes from one of the founding fathers of this country. In less then 400 years we have lost the path that was struck out by these people when they founded this country and turned it into exactly what they feared most. I fear they turn now in their graves and weep for us from above.

I cannot find the quote I'm after but I remember a quote from one of the founding fathers, not sure if it was Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, or who exactly but to paraphrase "It is the duty of every American to rebel against an oppressive government."

This is, without a doubt, a slap in the face to freedom and what America use to represent. We have turned from a democracy into a nation ruled by despots. As much as it upsets me to have to make the analogy this brings to mind the state of Germany shortly before Hitler really got WWII fired up. Slowly, but surely, rights and freedoms were taken away, music was banned, artwork was destroyed, innocent people were locked away without trial or reason. Property was seized, the freedom to speak one's thoughts and beliefs was broken with the fear that to speak ill of those in charge would result in inprisonment. I think we're beginning to come close to this point. Not quite there, but will be soon if things don't change.

And we wonder why half the world hates us. We are perhaps the most opulent country in the world and we squander away everything on stupid shit. We try to force our beliefs, ideals and system of government on everyone who isn't like us or allied with us. We try to police the world when we can't even police ourselves. We are a hypocracy. We can't even get half of our own population to share the common beliefs and founding points of this nation, much less those in charge. And yet we continue to try to look like this perfect little nation of great people.

You know what...fuck this place. I'm moving to Canada or Germany or somewhere else once my service is up. This country has gone to hell in a hand basket and unless serious changes are made this nation has sunk to its lowest and is, in my eyes, damn near unredeemable.

I've actually seriously considered moving to Canada. But I have a duty to the US at this point and I'll fulfill that before I come to such a decision.

Though I'm not sure if I'll really need a sponser per say. I've got enough Canadian friends that i'm sure I could find one or more to sponser my sorry American ass lol.

If you wanna move, go it is after all your right to leave. However, I've seen real despots, the US isn't close yet the potential is still just forming and go actually read the German laws, there are limits on free speech in that nation, you would be better off in Ireland or Britian. Actually New Zealand would be good to. I would avoid Australia, but that's because I have a dislike of deserts (look the entire interior is just one big sandpit okay? I don't wanna play in the sand unless there's an ocean within 20 meters).

The rest of us have this really big boulder to push uphill however, so either lead, follow or get the fuck outta of the way.

Frigid, while America isn't there yet, it is approaching that point quickly. The PATRIOT act, this instance, various settlements involving corporations and the rights of users.

While there are issues and problems with every country in the world and none are close to perfect, it just seems that lately America has been on a rapid downward spiral and shows no attempt to pull itself free of the hole its dug for itself. And at the current rate, by the time Bush gets out and another president steps in the country may be to far gone to really call a state of freedom anymore.

As for the big boulder, that's your own choice my friend. You can sit there and push it all day long but unless you find a way to get it all the way up before it rolls back down to the bottom you'll just be perpetually doing it for the rest of your life. While you may not like the thought or approve of it, the boulder isn't all there is.
