Your favorite songs (melody-wise)

Alright, don't give a hoot about lyrics because this time it's about melody and/or composition. So what are your favorite songs?


Mine:

Aqua - Turn Back Time
Dunno', but I just like the melody so much. I particularly love a part of the song where the rhytm stops and the chorus ("If only I could turn back time, if only I could save....") is only accompanied by the piano. Then the ryhtm gradually starts again, and eventually the whole rhytm kicks in and the song is whole again.


Orbital - Beached
OST The Beach (Di Caprio). Still my favorite on the dance floor; love the sting orchestral "melody". Too bad they don't play it anymore these days.


Tommy Page - Shoulder To Cry On
The composition "blends" right in with the melody; listening to the song feels like "flowing through".


Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia
I don't know, but I always like 4/4 "house" rythm combined with "melancholic" melodies. Nevertheless, it's the same reason why I love Beached above.


Landing and Porcelain by Moby
"Melancholic" melodies could also great when combined with electronic composition; Moby just proved it with his two songs above.


Duran-duran - Come Undone
Yet another example of composition blending smoothly with the main melody. I especially like the part where the background female singer sings , "Can't ever keep from falling apart, at the seams".


Madonna - American Pie
This is probably subjective, but I think the melody is more enjoyable when accompanied with Maddona's ambient, space-age composition, compared to the original. Makes a great driving song.


Kylie Minogue - Paper Dolls
The combination of acoustic guitar and Kylie's teasing voice makes it a very sweet love song.

Evanesce - Tourniquet
The bass-guitar makes a nice intro as well as accompanying the chorus. If we ignore the "suicidal" lyrics, I guess it would be a great theme song for:
(1) a large assault/bombardment in space battle (or a BDZ).
(2) a Lovecraftian ancient being struggles and escapes from its thousand-years "shackles" and ready to return to this world.

[Brother-Captain Gaius]

The topic just for me, because I generally dislike lyrics and only listen to music for the actual music.

Jimi Hendrix's rendition of All Along the Watchtower. Wicked cool guitar lixx.

Deep Purple -- Highway Star and Child in Time. More wicked cool guitar lixx.

Lee Jackson -- Grabbag, better known as the Duke Nukem theme. Captain, it's... too badass!

Scarborough Fair. I love medieval stuff, to the great annoyance of my friends.

John Williams -- Duel of the Fates. Mmm.

Probably more that I can't think of right now.

Well everything I remember that has lyrics has me remembering the lyrics, too (even the ones I don't undertand) so I'll stick with instrumentals.

'Superman' theme
Best. Superhero Theme. Ever.

'Supergirl' theme
Thematically very close to the above, yet unique in its own way. Goldsmith did very good work there, even if the movie itself is somewhat meh.

The Raider's March, more informally know as the Indiana Jones theme
Nuff said.

TMP Trek theme
So good even the TNG rip-off of it is good.

For starters.

KAN mentioned Tourniquet, I always liked Whisper. The lyrics aren't "suicidal" (the reasons I never cared for My Last Breath - gah, though Tourniquet was OK), and the Gothic chanting is the roxxor. It would probably make a good theme to a zombie flick or something, anyway.

Besides that, I mostly remember instrumentals too, like Batman.

The Imperial March
Self-explanatory. This song kicks ass, and always will.

The Emperor's Theme
Much lower and mysterious than the Imperial March, I always liked this one as well.

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Some might not like the religious theme of the song, but the melody is awesome.

God Save the Queen
The melody is the same, albeit slower and more serene, as My Country Tis of Thee, or whatever the hell it's called. Formal and soothing.

Soviet National Anthem
Very emotional, this is one of my guilty pleasures.

Das Vedonia
The Hunt For Red October theme. Kick. Ass.

Stargate movie theme (not the damn SG-1 version!)
Very cool, and Egyptian. What more can I say?

Stargate Atlantis theme
This one surprised me when I first heard it. It's very good for a TV show theme, almost cenematic quality.

Adagio For Strings
Featured prominently in the first Homeworld game. Just beautiful. Every time I hear this it reminds me of the Burning of Kharak, though.
